In 2009, mine workers at Kroondal went on a strike for a wage increase. Their union, NUM, negotiated a deal with management without engaging the workers. 3,500 mine workers were instantly dismissed. 12 years later, after sheltering in a prefabricated hostel since their original hostel was burned down to forcibly get rid of them. their lives have become only more precarious.
