Professor Sir Andrew Haines is an epidemiologist and an academic. He has co-authored around 300 scientific articles, book chapters and reports.
Currently, Andrew is the Professor of Public Health and Primary Care at LSHTM, with a joint appointment in the Department of Social and Environmental Health Research, and in the Department of Population Health. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Physicians and of the Faculty of Public Health and was made a foreign Associate member of the US Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2007. He was knighted for services to medicine in 2005.
Andrew worked part time as a general practitioner alongside his position as the Professor of Primary Health Care at UCL between 1987-2000, and he was also the Director of LSHTM between 2000-2010.
His current research includes the study of the health co-benefits and economic impacts of low carbon policies in the transport, food and agriculture and housing sectors. He chairs the Lancet Commission on Planetary Health which has been set up to assess the potential implications for health of multiple interacting environmental changes affecting the Earth’s ‘essential life support systems’ and will publish its findings in mid 2015.
