It’s 2024, not 1984.
In July at NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit in Washington, newly appointed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer urged Nato countries to increase their defence spending in response to “rising global threats”, at the same time as setting out national plans to spend tens of billions more on the military. Starmer has made no secret of his commitment to maintaining a nuclear arsenal, and recently said: “Of course I would be prepared to use [nuclear weapons]”.
Aside from the immense cost, Trident does not make us safe. It has not prevented the UK from engaging in wars, and owning these weapons only increases the risk of nuclear annihilation and horrendous health impacts of destruction, radiation and nuclear fallout. We need transformational investment in our health that also addresses the root causes of inequality—not imposed austerity in every spending area but defence.
We have a new government, but some things haven’t changed. This Hiroshima Day, donate to Medact and support our continued fight against the threat of nuclear annihilation and for a better, more peaceful and healthier world for all.
