ICAN Cities Appeal

,

Join us in taking action to encourage your local council to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by joining the ICAN Cities Appeal.

The ICAN Cities Appeal is a grassroots initiative that seeks to build local civil and political support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), with the aim of eventually influencing national governments to sign up to the Treaty.

It recognises the importance and power of bringing together people from local communities all around the world, to learn from each other and to raise awareness of the TPNW.

The UK government has to date refused to engage with the TPNW, but that’s not to say that the people across the UK agree with that position: 15 local councils have signed up to support the ICAN Cities Appeal, and 83 cities in the UK are members of Mayors for Peace.

The health community has for decades played a key role in the anti-nuclear movement, raising awareness of the health and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons.

Now it’s time for health workers to use their knowledge, experience and humanitarian commitment to encourage their local councils to announce their support for the TPNW!

Visit the ICAN website to see a list of cities who have spoken out in support of the TPNW through the ICAN Cities Appeal and see if your closest city is on the list. If it is not, and you’d like to be put in touch with members in your area to start working on a council, email [email protected]
