Ambassador Miguel Ruiz Cabañas holds a degree in International Relations from the Colegio de México, and a master’s degree in Political Science from Columbia University in New York.
After joining the Mexican Foreign Service in January 1979, Miguel was appointed Ambassador on June 30, 1998. He has since served in a variety of positions, including as Head of Drug Trafficking Affairs in the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations, and as the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the Organization of American States (OAS).
In 2015, Miguel was appointed as Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the academic field he has been professor of International Relations and Foreign Policy in several Mexican academic centres. His specialisations include Mexico-United States Relations, drug trafficking, and security in the American Hemisphere.
