SUMMARY:AGM 2021
DESCRIPTION:The annual Medact members meeting is just around the corner! This is the second we’re holding online to help us stay safe from the coronavirus\, but we have a packed agenda including important business for how Medact runs. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\nIt was wonderful to see so many of you online at last year’s meeting\, and this year we’re looking forward to bringing so many members together again\, both veterans as well as new faces! Over 200 new members have joined in the last year – a record! This meeting is an opportunity for us all to get together and consider the overall running of the organisation. \n\n\n\nThe day will include: \n\n\n\n\na chance to hear from a number of our campaigns and member groups\n\n\n\na menu of opportunities to get involved in the coming months\n\n\n\na discussion and voting on Medact’s organisational position on nuclear power (see more)\n\n\n\nother essential business including scrutiny of our finances and election of Trustees (see more)\n\n\n\n\nNon-members are welcome to join the meeting\, but you must be a member to propose and vote on motions or in elections. If you would like to get involved in running Medact\, why not join today? \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP to receive final papers and joining details: \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nMotions\n\n\n\nWe have one motion on the agenda\, relating to Medact’s position on nuclear power: \n\n\n\n\n‘It is proposed Medact adopt the following policy position: \n\n\n\nGiven the high costs of civil nuclear power\, its close association with the military and the detrimental and prolonged effects of the nuclear industry on the global environment; and given the rapid increase in the much cheaper and more efficient sources of low-carbon renewable energy which could supply the bulk of all sources of power for the UK\, thereby completely filling the gap left by the withdrawal of fossil fuels: the UK should abandon all plans to expand its civil nuclear power programme\, and proceed vigorously with the development of renewable sources – wind\, solar\, geothermal and ocean.’ \n\n\n\nProposed: Frank Boulton \n\n\n\nSeconded: Bimal Khadka \n\n\n\n\nMembers may wish to refer to our consultation briefing on the issue when considering this motion. \n\n\n\nTrustee elections\n\n\n\nThree of our current Trustees have completed a first three-year term and will be standing for re-election: \n\n\n\n\nKitty Mohan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKitty is a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control based in Oxford. Working in infectious disease public health (health protection)\, much of her last two years has been taken up with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A medical doctor by background\, she completed Public Health training in London in March 2018 and was awarded a PhD in Epidemiology from King’s College London in 2016. \n\n\n\nKitty is currently the Chair of the International Committee at the British Medical Association\, which leads on global health\, refugee health\, European issues\, fair medical trade and international doctors and healthcare for the BMA. She is also Deputy Head of the UK delegation to the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME). Prior to this\, she was the President of the European Junior Doctor Association from 2018-2020\, representing the interests of 300000 junior doctors across Europe. She was a member of BMA Council from 2013-18\, has previously been Director of the BMA \,and was joint lead negotiator for junior doctor contract negotiations whilst Co-chair of the BMA Junior Doctors Committee between 2013 and 2015. \n\n\n\n\n\nLesley Morrison\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLesley\, a retired GP with a background in public health\, has been a member of Medact\, and previously Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons\, since their inception. She lives south of Edinburgh\, coordinates the Scottish group and is a member of Health for a Green New Deal. She is always looking for opportunities to write and speak about health professionals’ role in disarmament\, especially ridding the world of nuclear weapons\, and in the climate emergency. This has included offering SSCs on these issues to Edinburgh medical students. \n\n\n\nCommitted to the value of the arts and humanities for improving medical training and practice\, and for health professionals’ wellbeing\, she is co-editor of “Tools of the Trade”\, a little book of poetry gifted to all Scottish medical graduates\, and author of “The Wellbeing Toolkit for Doctors”. \n\n\n\nLesley has served as a trustee for three years\, is proud of what Medact is achieving\, is continuing to learn and would appreciate being considered for a second term. \n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret Jackson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret is a GP in a small but busy practice in rural North Yorkshire\, as well as a GP trainer and co-ordinator for teaching in her practice for medical students from Hull York Medical School. \n\n\n\nShe has co-ordinated the Medact Yorkshire group since its inception in 2017\, with a focus on campaigns around fracking and fossil fuel divestment. \n\n\n\n\nOur current Treasurer\, who is currently a co-opted Trustee\, is also being put forward for election for a 3-year term: \n\n\n\n\nHannah Wright\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHannah is a data and analytics professional\, currently working for Iris in London. Her passion for health justice stems from her academic background in Epidemiology & Public Health; she has a BSc in Biomedical Science from UCL and an MSc Epidemiology from Imperial College London. Before joining Medact\, Hannah held the position of Treasurer and Growth & Development officer for Goal Diggers FC. \n\n\n\nShe has acted as Treasurer for Medact over the past year as a co-opted Trustee and has introduced methods to increase visibility and rigour of grant fundraising projections as well as visual methods to communicate account updates\, as well as contributing to wider Medact discussions.

SUMMARY:Fighting Blood Coal and Blood Mines: In solidarity with communities impacted by Anglo American mining
DESCRIPTION:On 30th April\, we’ll stand in solidarity with communities whose health and lives have been devastated by Anglo American’s mining operations across the Global South. Join us for lunch\, discussions and some practical actions to hold this company to account. \nAnglo American – some background\nAnglo American operates in many parts of the Global South\, leaving a trail of health destruction in its wake. \nThe Cerrejón open-pit coal mine in La Guajira\, Colombia \nThis mining giant owns a large stake in the infamous Cerrejón mine\, a vast open pit coal mine in Colombia. Cerrejón has been long associated with human rights abuses including displacement\, a lack of consultation with indigenous communities and serious harm to the health of local communities. \nCommunities living near the mine are forced to breath air that is heavy with coal dust and filled with the stench of burning. Many children suffer from respiratory problems; some become so ill that they cannot run or shout. Local hospitals are inundated with patients suffering from acute respiratory problems. \nIn Peru\, Anglo American’s Quellaveco project has raised serious concerns and opposition among local people. It is believed that copper mining in this region will use vast amounts of water in an area that is considered at high risk of drought and is heavily impacted by climate change. \nThere are fears that Anglo American’s mining in Chile is speeding up the melting process of glaciers and leading to their disappearance in some cases.  Glacier disruption could have serious impacts on hydrological cycles in the country with potentially devastating impacts for large proportions of the Chilean population. \nAnglo American and/or companies that Anglo American has part-owned\, have also been associated with armed groups responsible for human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the Philippines and South Africa\, local communities have faced severe repression for protesting against mining operations. And in Ghana and Mali\, local people have lived in fear as extractive activities have destroyed health\, lands and livelihoods. \nCompanies like Anglo American are exacerbating global health inequities; their extractavism damages health in the Global South while much of their profits are concentrated in the Global North. \nWhat will the event involve? \nPart 1 – Lunch and discussion at Medact\nWe’ll start with lunch at the Medact offices and discuss some practical action opportunities we can take as a healthcare community to hold Anglo American to account. Including; \n\nHow to use twitter and other media to get messages across to investors attending the Anglo American AGM. \nActions we can take to push for legally binding instruments to regulate the activities of multinational corporations like Anglo American.\nUsing fossil fuel divestment as a solidarity tactic. \n\nPart 2 – Vigil at the Anglo American AGM\nWe’ll leave the Medact offices at 13.00 and travel as a group to the Anglo American AGM at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre Broad Sanctuary\, Westminster\, London SW1P 3EE. \nWe’ll hold a vigil outside the AGM as the company’s shareholders arrive. \nAccessibility\nIf you have any accessibility requirements please contact deirdreduff@medact.org and we can organise travel from Medact to the vigil to meet your needs. \nThe venue for the vigil itself is flat and the nearest accessible toilets are two minutes walk away in Westminster Central Hall (see building-specific accessibility information). A portable sound system will be used for speeches. There will be some photography and filming with phones and SLR cameras\, flash photography is unlikely. There are no seating areas. Email deirdreduff@medact.org if you require a foldable chair or for other information on accessibility. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Migrant Access to Healthcare - The Hostile Environment in the NHS
DESCRIPTION:NHS policies are having a devastating impact on migrant health. Patients who cannot prove they have the correct immigration status can be faced with charges of up to 150% of the cost of treatment before being given vital care\, and fear hospitals will share their data with the Home Office\, leading to their deportation. \nThese policies are penalising some of the most vulnerable people in our society\, including pregnant women and those fleeing torture\, and are forcing health workers to act as border guards. \nJoin public health charity Medact and New North London Synagogue’s Asylum Seeker Drop In to discuss this issue\, and the role of healthcare workers. \nSpeakers:\nUssumane\, an asylum seeker from Guinea-Bissau who has experienced the devastating impact of NHS charging policies first hand \nDiane Taylor\, Guardian Journalist and one of the founders of and volunteer at the NNLS Asylum Seeker Drop In \nJames Skinner\, Nurse and access to healthcare campaigner at Medact \nHosted by:\nDr Ben Eder\, Member of Medact Refugee Solidarity Group\, boger of Noam and leader at Our Second Home – a summer camp for teenage refugee and asylum seekers in the UK \n[Registration has now closed]

I have been a partner for twenty three years. I am also a GP trainer and coordinate the medical student (Hull York Medical School) teaching in the practice. With psychotherapy colleagues I have been facilitating pioneering group work with people with long term conditions in order to enable people to be better able to take control of their health and well-being. I have been collaborating with researchers at Hull University on this work. \nI have all my adult life felt strongly about social justice and environmental sustainability. Over the past few years\, and in particular since attending the Medact conference “Healthy Planet\, Better World” in 2016\, I have become much clearer that I need to become active in the movement towards a fairer and more sustainable world. My colleague Angela Harvey and I launched Yorkshire Medact last year and have been involved in anti-fracking campaigns in Yorkshire and Lancashire. \nNow 55\, I am able to devote more of my energies to working with these issues as I reduce the time that I devote to the practice. I am keen to become more involved in Medact’s work as I see Medact as a far-sighted organisation that ‘punches above its weight’ in terms of what it achieves for its size. I believe that working with such a broad remit (peace and security\, climate and environment\, economic justice and human rights) crucially enables the links to be made between all these areas. For all these reasons I would be very interested in joining the Medact board. \nLesley Morrison\nLesley Morrison is a retired GP\, still involved  in medical student teaching\, who has been an active member of Medact since its inception and a member of MCANW prior to that. She has always felt passionately about the need to rid the world of nuclear weapons  and about the importance of Medact’s work to show that disarmament\, development\, human rights and concern for the environment are inextricably interlinked. \nLiving just south of Edinburgh\, she would represent the views of Medact Scotland. \nNeena Modi\nProfessor Neena Modi is a consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and professor of neonatal medicine at Imperial College London. She completed a three year term as president of the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in March 2018. She heads a major neonatal research programme focused on the perinatal determinants of lifelong health\, and led the development of the UK National Neonatal Research Database\, of which she is the current director. \nProfessor Modi has made many contributions to children’s services\, and has been at the forefront of reinvigorating the clinical research base of paediatrics and child health. SUMMARY:Recognising and acting on medical sequellae of human rights abuses - Training in Oxford
DESCRIPTION:A recent survey of 199 clinicians in the Northwest Region revealed that 55% had encountered a torture survivor in their NHS practice; most lacked confidence in how to help these patients. \nMedact\, Asylum Welcome Oxford and Forrest Medico-Legal Services have partnered to organise a special teaching session to train interested doctors\, nurses and counsellors in methods of documenting\, in a a very limited way\, clinical evidence of human rights abuses previously suffered by the detainees they are visiting. \nThis documentation would not  take the form of full Medico-Legal Reports (MLR) which are compliant with the Istanbul Protocol. But even a short letter can sometimes assist detainees in achieving release and beginning to establish their case for international protection. Moreover\, such documentation is very useful to lawyers in seeking an MLR if indicated. \nIf time allows\, the training will also cover entitlement and barriers to NHS care. \nThe training is free of charge for members of Medact or Asylum Welcome. \nFor more details\, please contact Frank Arnold at Medact or Almas Farzi at Asylum Welcome.

SUMMARY:2nd People's Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:This event is being run by the People’s Health Movement. For more information about PHM\, please visit www.phm-uk.org.uk. The People´s Health Movement (PHM) has its roots deep in the grassroots people’s movement and owes its genesis to many health networks and activists who have been concerned by the growing inequities in health over the last 25 years. \nBackground and Context\n The word ‘austerity’ has recently gained prominence. It is used to describe a wide range of cuts to public spending across services including welfare support\, education\, health and social care. What is often overlooked is how ‘austerity’ is a deliberate policy by the government to redistribute resources from the poor to the rich through bailout of banks\, corporate tax evasion and private finance initiatives. Austerity and its’ effects are being imposed selectively\, unevenly and unfairly across society with devastating impacts on disadvantaged groups pushing them further into poverty\, deprivation and poor health. It is also being used to justify a further expansion of privatisation\, corporate welfare and excessive profiteering – not least of all in the NHS. Whilst this is happening in various ways and at different speeds in Scotland\, England\, Wales and Northern Ireland\, it is a crisis affecting the whole of the UK. Therefore\, the political\, economic and ideological underpinnings of austerity need to be questioned and challenged. This is a priority for those working in the health sector\, and for those seeking to reverse the trend of widening health inequalities. \nWhy attend?\n – Learn more about the background to austerity measures and their impact on local and global determinants of health\, on health and related services and on health inequity in different parts of the UK. – Learn skills for movement building and activism with community and campaign groups; and strategies for challenging austerity – Dialogue and Network with organisations and individuals involved in health and social activism. – Take part in developing a People’s Health Manifesto and help build a progressive health movement to challenge austerity and exclusion throughout the UK \nClick here to download the flyer.\nFor more information and to register\, please click here.
