SUMMARY:Trans Health Justice
DESCRIPTION:Trans people seeking gender-affirming healthcare are routinely confronted with pathologisation and the slow violence of years-long waiting lists. In the past five years\, attacks on trans healthcare in the UK have intensified: \n\n\n\n\nThe NHS has halted prescription of puberty blockers for under-18s in the context of gender-affirming care\n\n\n\nAdult trans healthcare services remain chronically underfunded and difficult to access\n\n\n\nA recent Supreme Court ruling undermines the right to bodily autonomy and self-determination\n\n\n\n\nThese attacks are not isolated – they’re part of a wider rollback of health services and human rights in the UK.For this online event\, we’ll explore the state of trans health and trans rights in the UK\, how they’re shaped by social and economic determinants like housing and austerity and what resistance rooted in solidarity and justice can look like. We’ll hear from: \n\n\n\n\nJack Doyle\, historian & trans health advocate\n\n\n\nFae Fulconis\, athlete and campaigner\n\n\n\nShiraz Hussain\, member of rs21\n\n\n\n\nThis event is especially valuable for health workers\, but it’s open to everyone – so please share widely! This is part of Medact’s Learning for Action series that aims to equip us with the knowledge and skills we need to win a more just world.

SUMMARY:Mould is Political Screening – Sheffield
DESCRIPTION:Over 2 million people in the UK are living in homes with black mould – a serious risk to their health and wellbeing. But it’s not tenants who have gotten us into this situation –  it’s politicians. For too long\, politicians have prioritised landlords’ wealth over people’s health. Now\, we’re saying: enough.A new film from the Homes for Us alliance\, Mould is Political\, shows the impact of black mould on one family\, and how ordinary people are coming together to demand change. Here in Sheffield\, far too many people are living in cold\, damp and unsafe homes – making them sick and causing constant stress\, all due to political failure and profiteering landlords. \n\n\n\nJoin Medact Sheffield and Sheffield Tenants Union for a screening of Mould is Political\, followed by food and a discussion about the issues people are facing here in Sheffield\, and how health workers\, tenants and community members can come together to organise for decent\, safe housing for all.

SUMMARY:Alternative Training on Prevent
DESCRIPTION:It is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships between patients and health workers is essential to this work. However\, the Prevent Duty – with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation” – compromises all of this.  \n\n\n\nAs we’ve outlined in our work\, Prevent is a source of harm and increased marginalisation\, particularly for Muslim and racialised communities\, as well as those with mental health conditions.  \n\n\n\nSo\, why is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about the harms of Prevent in safeguarding training? \n\n\n\nJoin us for this series of Alternative Training on Prevent to learn more\, and find out how you can add your voice to the movement to end the Prevent Duty. Together we call for #CareNotSurvelliance! \n\n\n\nThis event is particularly aimed at people who work or are training in\, study\, or who have worked in health – though everyone from our movement for health justice\, interested in learning more\, is welcome! If you have any questions or concerns ahead of this event – feel free to email me\, sarahlasoye@medact.org.

SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health group meeting: June
DESCRIPTION:What is the securitisation of health? \n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \n\n\n\nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation here. \n\n\n\nAbout the group\n\n\n\nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. New members are welcome!  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org. \n\n\n\nThis event will be held online on Zoom.
