SUMMARY:Migrant Access to Healthcare - The Hostile Environment in the NHS
DESCRIPTION:NHS policies are having a devastating impact on migrant health. Patients who cannot prove they have the correct immigration status can be faced with charges of up to 150% of the cost of treatment before being given vital care\, and fear hospitals will share their data with the Home Office\, leading to their deportation. \nThese policies are penalising some of the most vulnerable people in our society\, including pregnant women and those fleeing torture\, and are forcing health workers to act as border guards. \nJoin public health charity Medact and New North London Synagogue’s Asylum Seeker Drop In to discuss this issue\, and the role of healthcare workers. \nSpeakers:\nUssumane\, an asylum seeker from Guinea-Bissau who has experienced the devastating impact of NHS charging policies first hand \nDiane Taylor\, Guardian Journalist and one of the founders of and volunteer at the NNLS Asylum Seeker Drop In \nJames Skinner\, Nurse and access to healthcare campaigner at Medact \nHosted by:\nDr Ben Eder\, Member of Medact Refugee Solidarity Group\, boger of Noam and leader at Our Second Home – a summer camp for teenage refugee and asylum seekers in the UK \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Healthcare access for refugees\, asylum seekers and migrants: training
DESCRIPTION:Are you a doctor\, nurse\, physio\, receptionist\, healthcare assistant or other healthcare professional? Do you care about equality in healthcare access? Do you care about access for essential healthcare to vulnerable refugees\, asylum seekers and migrants living in Bristol and the southwest? Then come along for some free training! \nMedAct Bristol and Doctors of the World medics are running a training event on Monday December 17th from 7-9pm at St Michael’s Hospital Bristol for healthcare professionals to learn about the complex issues surrounding primary and secondary healthcare access for these vulnerable groups. Recent Home Office legislation has caused confusion among healthcare staff in understanding the rights of these groups to accessing essential and basic healthcare. This has posed a barrier for patients from these groups who often cannot access the care they need\, are to afraid to\, or do not know what they are entitled to. This poses a serious risk to their health and well-being and as health professionals we need to understand how our practice affect them. \nCome along to our training session on Monday 17th December to find out about these issues and how you can help in your daily practice. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/healthcare-access-for-refugeesasylum-seekers-and-migrantstraining-tickets-52934949860?utm_term=eventurl_text#listing-organizer

The report is a joint project between Medact and ForcesWatch that analyses the way the armed forces market their careers to adolescents and young people. Throughout the evening we will review how military marketing campaigns create powerful messages that at times exploit developmental vulnerabilities and social inequality\, risking the health and well-being of recruits. \nChair\nDr Victoria Basham\, of Cardiff University\, is Editor-in-Chief of the Critical Military Studies journal (Taylor & Francis) which she also co-founded\, and co-editor of the Edinburgh University Press book series\, Advances in Critical Military Studies. Victoria is the President of the European International Studies Association. Her research focuses on issues of gender\, race\, class and sexuality in relation to militaries\, militarism and militarisation. \nSpeakers\nDr Guddi Singh\, is a paediatric doctor at the East London NHS Foundation Trust. She is the co-author of a forthcoming BMJ article written about Medact’s work on child recruitment to the military. She is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine Paediatrics and Child Health Section Council\, and recently presented a three part TV programme on BBC2 called ‘Babies: Their Wonderful World.’ \nRhianna Louise is co-author of the Selling the Military report\, with colleague Emma Sangster. She works on Education and Outreach at ForcesWatch. Rhianna researches and writes around military recruitment in the UK\, particularly the recruitment of young people\, and on human rights and ethics issues related to the military. She previously coordinated the publication and was the lead author of Medact’s report on health concerns about recruitment children into the military. \nRhiannon Spear is a law student\, and a Glasgow councillor with the Scottish National Party. In 2017 as National Convenor of Young Scots for Independence\, the youth wing of the SNP\, she led a successful motion to make raising the military recruitment age to 18 SNP party policy. Rhiannon is also the chair of the TIE campaign\, an organisation campaigning for LGBT-inclusive education in Scottish Schools. She is a passionate activist known for speaking out about inclusivity and systemic sexism. \nThe evening will open for a reception with refreshments at 6.30pm and we will begin the discussion at 7.00pm on Wednesday 27th February. The event will be recorded\, so please inform us if you would prefer not to be filmed or photographed. Copies of our new report will be available at the event. The venue is ramp accessible\, and there is an accessible toilet available by lift on the first floor. Please inform us if you need anything else to be able to attend this event. \nMedact is a global health charity that uses evidence-based campaigns to support health workers to take action on structural barriers to health equity and justice\, in an effort to bring about a world in which everyone can access their human right to health. \nForcesWatch is an independent research and campaigning organisation which scrutinises armed forces recruitment practices in the UK and challenges efforts to embed militarist values in civilian society.

SUMMARY:Ensuring Universal Healthcare in the NHS: Advocacy tools in the context of migrant charging
DESCRIPTION:In October 2017 the NHS underwent a fundamental shift in the way it provides care – for the first time since the NHS was founded\, Trusts are required to charge patients upfront for treatment. \nThis event will explore the impact of NHS charging regulations on migrants and the role healthcare workers have in improving access to care for all\, both in advocating for patients facing increasing barriers to care\, and in protecting the universal principles that underpin the NHS. Medact and Docs Not Cops will launch their Patients Not Passports Toolkit and Briefing: a toolkit to understand the detail of new charging policy\, and detail the many ways healthcare workers can advocate for patients. \nEvent hosted by the Institute of Global Health\, Medact\, Docs Not Cops\, Health Professionals for Global Health. \nEnsuring Universal Healthcare: Advocacy tools in the context of migrant charging\n6:30 – 8:30pm\nTuesday 9th April\nKennedy Lecture Theatre\, UCL Institute Of Child Health\, 30 Guilford Street\, London\, WC1N 1EH \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Fighting Blood Coal and Blood Mines: In solidarity with communities impacted by Anglo American mining
DESCRIPTION:On 30th April\, we’ll stand in solidarity with communities whose health and lives have been devastated by Anglo American’s mining operations across the Global South. Join us for lunch\, discussions and some practical actions to hold this company to account. \nAnglo American – some background\nAnglo American operates in many parts of the Global South\, leaving a trail of health destruction in its wake. \nThe Cerrejón open-pit coal mine in La Guajira\, Colombia\nThis mining giant owns a large stake in the infamous Cerrejón mine\, a vast open pit coal mine in Colombia. Cerrejón has been long associated with human rights abuses including displacement\, a lack of consultation with indigenous communities and serious harm to the health of local communities. \nCommunities living near the mine are forced to breath air that is heavy with coal dust and filled with the stench of burning. Many children suffer from respiratory problems; some become so ill that they cannot run or shout. Local hospitals are inundated with patients suffering from acute respiratory problems. \nIn Peru\, Anglo American’s Quellaveco project has raised serious concerns and opposition among local people. It is believed that copper mining in this region will use vast amounts of water in an area that is considered at high risk of drought and is heavily impacted by climate change. \nThere are fears that Anglo American’s mining in Chile is speeding up the melting process of glaciers and leading to their disappearance in some cases.  Glacier disruption could have serious impacts on hydrological cycles in the country with potentially devastating impacts for large proportions of the Chilean population. \nAnglo American and/or companies that Anglo American has part-owned\, have also been associated with armed groups responsible for human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the Philippines and South Africa\, local communities have faced severe repression for protesting against mining operations. And in Ghana and Mali\, local people have lived in fear as extractive activities have destroyed health\, lands and livelihoods. \nCompanies like Anglo American are exacerbating global health inequities; their extractavism damages health in the Global South while much of their profits are concentrated in the Global North. \nWhat will the event involve? \nPart 1 – Lunch and discussion at Medact\nWe’ll start with lunch at the Medact offices and discuss some practical action opportunities we can take as a healthcare community to hold Anglo American to account. Including; \n\nHow to use twitter and other media to get messages across to investors attending the Anglo American AGM. \nActions we can take to push for legally binding instruments to regulate the activities of multinational corporations like Anglo American.\nUsing fossil fuel divestment as a solidarity tactic. \n\nPart 2 – Vigil at the Anglo American AGM\nWe’ll leave the Medact offices at 13.00 and travel as a group to the Anglo American AGM at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre Broad Sanctuary\, Westminster\, London SW1P 3EE. \nWe’ll hold a vigil outside the AGM as the company’s shareholders arrive. \nAccessibility\nIf you have any accessibility requirements please contact deirdreduff@medact.org and we can organise travel from Medact to the vigil to meet your needs. \nThe venue for the vigil itself is flat and the nearest accessible toilets are two minutes walk away in Westminster Central Hall (see building-specific accessibility information). A portable sound system will be used for speeches. There will be some photography and filming with phones and SLR cameras\, flash photography is unlikely. There are no seating areas. Email deirdreduff@medact.org if you require a foldable chair or for other information on accessibility. \n[Registration has now closed]
