NHS hospitals routinely share patient data with the Home Office. People are harassed by debt collectors for huge bills they will never be able to pay.  \n\n\n\nSave the dates! People all over the country will take action across five themed days of action\, more info to follow! \n\n\n\nWe must remember all those whose lives have been devastated by border controls in healthcare\, continue to resist through collective organising in hospitals and workplaces\, and stand in solidarity with all those who are impacted by the hostile environment. Join us! \n\n\n\nNo Borders In The NHS: Week of Action\, 23 – 27 October\n\n\n\nPeople all over the country will take action across five themed days.\n\n\n\nSaturday 23rd – Remember and Resist!\n\n\n\nWe begin by remembering and honouring all those whose lives have been destroyed by racist Hostile Environment policies. October 23rd marks four years since the introduction of upfront charging for migrants in the NHS\, and two years since the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants who were found in a lorry in Essex. \n\n\n\nToday we remember Nasar Ullah Khan\, who died after being denied treatment for heart failure. We remember Elfreda Spencer\, who died because she could not pay £30\,000 upfront for chemotherapy. We remember Kelema Mulat\, who died following a 6 week delay in breast cancer treatment. We remember Elvis\, who died of coronavirus without help because he was too scared of being charged or deported if he came forward for treatment. The 2017 introduction of upfront charging in the NHS marked one of the most profound changes since it was established\, forcing NHS Trust to withhold care from people that cannot pay. The new Health and Care Bill\, currently being debated in Parliament will further open the door to privatisation and the undermining of our health system as we know it. \n\n\n\nRead this article by Keep Our NHS Public campaigner\, Alia Butt\, and help us share Docs Not Cops’ video outlining what is happening to the NHS.  \n\n\n\nMon 25th – Solidarity Knows No Borders: End the Hostile Environment\n\n\n\nToday we stand in solidarity with everyone impacted by the Hostile Environment and the racism of border controls. From schools\, to housing\, to healthcare\, the Hostile Environment seeks to destroy lives and undermine access to vital public services. At the same time\, the Government’s new Borders & Nationality Bill – also known as the #AntiRefugeeBill – seeks to create a two tier system for people seeking safety\, normalise offshore migrant prisons\, and limit migrants’ access to justice.  \n\n\n\nToday we will highlight that the immigration system is not broken – it is violent and hostile by design. We will stand with all campaigning for an end to the Hostile Environment in its entirety. \n\n\n\nIn London\, there will be a street stall outside St Thomas’ Hospital to talk to NHS staff about The Hostile Environment and how it will impact their work: \n\n\n\n\n7:30pm – 9pm @ St Thomas’ Hospital\, Westminster Bridge entrance\, SE1. With Lambeth and Southwark Patients Not Passports\n\n\n\n\nIn Sheffield\, there’ll be a street stall outside the Royal Hallamshire to talk to NHS staff about the Hostile Environment\, raise awareness about the Justice for Simba campaign\, and find out how to get more involved with the movement for migrant justice: \n\n\n\n\n4pm @ Royal Hallamshire Hospital\, Sheffield\, S10. With Medact Sheffield\, The Justice for Simba Campaign\, South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group\n\n\n\n\nIn Newcastle\, there’ll be a street stall outside Royal Victoria Infirmary to talk to NHS staff about The Hostile Environment and how it will impact their work: \n\n\n\n\n8am – 9:30am\, Monday 25th @ Royal Victoria Infirmary\, Newcastle\, NE1. With Keep Our NHS Public North East and Medact North East\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 26th – Organise To Win\n\n\n\nThe Hostile Environment seeks to turn those who  care and support the most marginalised in our society into border guards. This is what we must remember when we build our campaigns against racist immigration controls in our public services. The Department of Health will only listen when we organise in our workplaces and in our communities\, to raise collective awareness about what is happening under the Hostile Environment and together refuse to be complicit in this system. \n\n\n\nIt will take all of us to win. That means everybody the Hostile Environment tries to recruit as a border guard\, we must now recruit to our campaign: to be fighters for justice and to stand up for everyone’s right to healthcare. DESCRIPTION:In our next reading group we shall discuss a short paper exploring the impacts of policing on public health\, defunding the police and the abolitionist approach to public health: Deivanayagam TA\, Lasoye S\, Smith J\, et al Policing is a threat to public health and human rights BMJ Global Health 2021;6:e004582  \nWe invite participants to engage with two sets of questions: group A and group B questions. Group A questions are mostly for your personal reflection and you won’t be asked to share your responses during the reading group unless you choose to do so in a breakout room. Group B questions are the issues we will certainly reflect on during our time together. \nGroup A questions:\n\nHow do you instinctively react to the police? How does your community/people you associate with mostly react to the police?\nHow have your past experiences (direct or indirect) with the police informed your opinion of them?\n\nGroup B questions:\n\nHow do you encounter policing in your workplace?\nWhat are your views on defunding the police/reallocation of funds as a solution?\n\nPracticalities and accessibility:\n\nWe will circulate our group ground rules when you sign up\, and ask that you only join us if you are happy to commit to these principles.\nPlease read the article ahead of the reading group. SUMMARY:Health blocs @ Global Day of Action for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:What’s happening?\nThis Autumn\, the Decarbonisation and Economic Strategy Bill (otherwise known as the Green New Deal Bill) returns to Parliament. The Bill aims to end licensing for new fossil fuel projects\, promote the rapid decarbonisation of our economy\, support healthy food systems\, safeguard natural habitats\, restore biodiversity and tackle inequality\, all the while investing in millions of good quality green jobs! \nThe Bill presents a unique opportunity for the promotion of both public and planetary health ─ one in which the health community has a crucial role to play. The changes we’re calling for are not small. To win\, we need to build public support to put pressure on MPs to do the right thing. \nWhat will the action involve?\nThis action will involve setting up a local ‘Climate Clinic’ to engage the public on the health impacts of the climate crisis and encourage them to take action by signing a postcard to their MP asking that they support the Green New Deal Bill. \nWe’re encouraging groups to run their Climate Clinics on either Saturday 25th September or Saturday 2nd October – but if this isn’t possible for you/your group\, please do still sign up\, it’ll be okay to run it on another day that suits you. \nWe’ve produced an action guide that explains the step-by-step process of how to set up your own Climate Clinic. But health workers in the Medact Research Network debunk these claims in our new briefing The Public Health Case Against the Policing Bill. \nWritten to support the huge groundswell of opposition to this bill in the #KillTheBill movement\, the briefing explains why the measures in the Bill – greater police powers\, repression of protest\, harsher prison sentences\, erosion of confidentiality and increased criminalisation of Gypsy and Traveller communities – will actually harm public health  and entrench discrimination. \nWe aim to articulate and amplify radical public health voices against the Policing Bill’s approach and explore potential alternatives. \nYou’ll hear from health workers who are members of our Research Network and involved in creation of the briefing\, and we’re thrilled to host four fantastic speakers who will discuss public health in the context of crime\, policing and prison: \nLola Olufemi – Lola is a black feminist writer and researcher\, author of Feminism Interrupted: Disrupting Power and Experiments in Imagining Otherwise. Alongside writing\, she is a member of ‘bare minimum‘\, an interdisciplinary anti-work arts collective. Lola also facilitates reading groups/workshops\, occasionally curates\, and is volunteer co-ordinator at the Feminist Library in South London. \nKelsey M – Kelsey is a feminist\, abolitionist organiser based in London\, resisting state violence and working to explore and build transformative justice and community-led responses to violence. As a facilitator with grassroots collectives she delivers workshops exploring community accountability\, bystander intervention\, power\, and tools for campaigning and movement building.  \nChelsea McDonagh – Chelsea is a researcher\, Irish Traveller activist and writer. She speaks on a wide range of issues affecting Gypsy and Traveller people including education\, health\, policy and politics. Chelsea is one of the co-founders of the Rom Belong programme\, a KCL Widening Participation programme for Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller pupils and is passionate about improving opportunities for young people. \nKavian Kulasabanathan – Kavian is a paediatric A&E doctor and researcher at the University of Oxford. His interests span socio-political determinants of health\, particularly pertaining to race and class\, alongside community-centered models of care. Kavian organises with PHM-UK and Race & Health collective. \nPresenters covered topics such as the future implications of the PCSC bill\, different visions of public health\, new approaches to care\, and approaches to ‘serious violence’ and socio-economic issues that don’t rely on punitive or carceral responses. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 6th November\, Health workers and students across the UK took to the streets in their 100s as part of the COP 26 Coalition Global Day of Action. In 17 cities and towns\, we marched as Health Blocs demanding that health justice means climate justice.  \nWe also came together for The People’s Health Hearing as part of the COP 26 Coalition’s People’s Summit for Climate Justice. We heard directly from people and communities at the frontlines of climate violence\, who face the worst impacts whilst contributing the least to the crisis. It was a deeply moving space as we connected with allies across the world\, who shared the health impacts of our extractive economic system. We concluded the hearing with hope as listeners shared their visions for health and climate justice.  \nThis is just the start. We are building the health movement for a transformative green new deal\, one that calls to cut injustice and cut carbon to real zero. DESCRIPTION:In the few months since the COP26 climate talks\, the UK government has moved to greenlight new oil and gas fields. However\, in December communities and campaigners secured a massive victory after Shell pulled out of the controversial Cambo oil field off the coast of the Shetlands\, effectively postponing development of the field.  \nWe now face a massive challenge over the coming months and years to not only make sure that the Cambo oil field is permanently scrapped\, but to ensure that each of the roughly ten proposed oil and gas projects set for the UK never see the light of day.  \nJoin us on Wednesday 16th February at 6pm for the first Health for a Green New Deal Big Meeting of 2022 to hear updates from local organisers and discuss how the health community can mobilise against new fossil fuels.  \n[Registration has now closed]
