SUMMARY:Health for a Green New Deal: Prescription for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, health workers across the UK started running climate clinics to engage their communities and put pressure on MPs to oppose new fossil fuels and support the Green New Deal Bill. \nAlmost a year since COP26\, the government has approved new oil fields with up to 40 in the pipeline. At the same time\, energy companies have recorded profits\, whilst people are having to choose between heating and eating. \nThis year\, we are going to build the pressure – join us online for the October Big Meeting of the Health for a Green New Deal campaign\, where we will be coming together to: \n\nHear updates from local groups\nLaunch our brand new ‘Prescription for Climate Justice’ action guide\nPractice persuasive conversations\nShare plans around COP 27 Global Day of Action & the People’s Health Tribunal\n\nWhether you’ve been organising with us all along or are brand new to H4GND\, the Big Meetings are the perfect opportunity to hear what’s been happening\, what we have planned and how you can get involved. If you have any questions about this event or the campaign\, please email Rob (robabrams@medact.org) or Ben (beneder@medact.org).  \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Health blocs @ Global Day of Action for Climate Justice 2022
DESCRIPTION:Global temperatures\, rising. Energy bills\, rising. Billionaire profits\, rising. Health injustice\, rising. \nLast year\, you and the health community came together in your 100s across the UK for the global day of action during COP 26 in Glasgow. Since then\, energy companies are making record-breaking profits while people are being forced to choose between heating and eating.\n\nGovernment policies\, both nationally and globally\, are causing devastation to people’s health. Working people and people of colour—who have contributed the least to the problem—are paying the price with killer famines\, floods\, crop failures\, fires and rising poverty. \n\nThis November\, when world leaders meet in Egypt for COP27\, African movements have called for a Global Day of Action for climate justice. \n\nThe UK Government must stop its climate wrecking plans\, and implement real climate solutions that solve both the climate and cost of living crises. To stop this crisis we need action that cuts carbon\, tackles inequality and ends the injustices baked into our world. Communities in the global south need urgent climate finance and reparations for the loss and damages that have caused mass destruction of lives and livelihoods. \n\nJustice won’t be handed to us by world leaders or delivered by corporations. We need to organise in our communities to ensure that not only is no one is cold or hungry this winter\, but that we stop the headlong rush into climate catastrophe.\n\nSign up to join your local health bloc on the day! Medact London\, Edinburgh\, Newcastle\, Sheffield\, Bristol and Blackpool. Select where you will be marching in the form below.\n\nYou can see the full list of locations where demonstrations are taking place on the climatejustice.uk website. If you are planning to join demonstrations not listed above\, please get in touch with Rob Abrams\, Climate & Health Campaign & Programme lead on robabrams@medact.org.\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health group meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is the securitisation of health? \nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times requiring health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation. \nAbout the group\nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. SUMMARY:Medact Research Network Quarterly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Medact Research Network Quarterly is a space for us to come together\, share our work\, discuss new projects\, or delve into deep discussion about research that has caught your interest. We aim to collectively develop our thought and research practices. \nOur network meets every 3 months\, and is a great way to connect with others interested in research in this area. \nAt this meeting we’re pleased to host Dr. Ryan Essex\, research fellow at the University of Greenwich. Ryan will present new research into health workers’ non-violent resistance based on surveys and interviews with Medact members. \nWe’ll also hear updates on our new project Criminalising Distress from both members of the research team and members of the StopSIM campaign group who sit on its steering committee. Register below to ensure you automatically receive the video link for the meeting! \nAs always\, we invite you to share your work with the group! This could be talking briefly about a research project you’ve recently completed or are currently working on\, or a paper you’ve seen that you’d like to share and discuss with the group. It’s a great opportunity to explain a new idea and connect with other researchers keen to collaborate on your project. \nInterested? Get in touch with Hil and include a few details of what you’d like to talk about at a future meeting! \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Medact Birmingham: Druids Heath Campaign Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Meet other Medact members and health workers interested in our Economic Justice work\, hear the latest updates on our Druids Heath campaign\, and find out about how to get involved. \nThe Economic Justice & Health group is currently working in Birmingham to support the Druids Heath Community Forum and their Build 1ST campaign – a community campaign organising against the demolition of council housing in Druids Heath. \n“Build 1ST Druids Heath” is a campaign to build first before eviction\, ensuring that residents get to move to a new house\, stay in the area and only move once: into a permanent\, quality home within their communities\, alongside a guaranteed right to return for those families who have already been moved. \nRecently\, health workers launched a petition to Birmingham City Council. We will discuss how else we can support the community in Druids Heath\, and how we can win the Build First demand. We’ll also explore the impact of housing on health more widely\, and the health community’s involvement in  organising around the housing crisis. \nThis is an in-person meeting at Cherry Reds Cafe (map) \n[Registration has now closed]
