SUMMARY:Organising for Power: The Core Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to build your skills to support your campaigning for health justice? \n\n\n\nMedact will be joining the Organising for Power (O4P) Training Sessions to learn\, practice and reflect together on core skills to bring into our campaigning for health justice. \n\n\n\nOrganising for Power: The Core Fundamentals is organised by lead trainer Jane McAlevey and hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. \n\n\n\nJane McAlevey has spent years organising in health settings across the UK and Europe – this training exists to support groups to develop core skills to strengthen their campaigns. We will be joining these sessions as Medact to collectively explore approaches to organising in the workplace and communities\, how to bring people in and build power for health justice. We will practice the core skills and reflect on how we can bring these practices into our campaigns. \n\n\n\nYou can sign up below to participate with Medact for the O4P training — please register your interest by Friday 22nd April. \n\n\n\nLogistics\n\n\n\nThe 6-week course is due to take place every Tuesday from 5 – 7pm BST between the 10th May and 14th June. \n\n\n\nWe will hold an additional session at the end of the course to reflect as Medact on the training. \n\n\n\nWe appreciate that starting at 5pm may be difficult for people to join and we would like to support as many people as possible to access and engage in the training — so are considering running an alternative later timeslot of 7 – 9pm on Wednesday. Please indicate which timings would work for you on the registration form. \n\n\n\nFor the training\, it is important as far as possible to have a consistent group of people\, so please only register if you would be able to make the majority of sessions. \n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\nTo see more details and the background to the programme\, please see this Organising for Power Explainer. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions at all about joining the training with Medact\, please get in touch with Medact’s Organiser\, Ben Eder\, at beneder@medact.org. \n\n\n\nRegistration has now closed!

SUMMARY:UK Gov: Join the Nuclear Ban Treaty World Meeting!
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 24 May at 1pm\, we invite you to join us and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) outside the Foreign\, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to urge the UK government to attend the First Meeting of State Parties (1MSP) of the Nuclear Ban Treaty. The UK cannot remain silent on the nuclear ban and must join the treaty! \nAt the end of June\, state representatives from across the world will be meeting in Vienna for the 1MSP of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). \nThis is a momentous occasion\, where member states of the TPNW will discuss the next steps to advancing the treaty and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. \nThe UK government\, however\, has continued to refuse to engage with the TPNW—and it has shown no intention of attending this incredibly important world meeting as an observer. \nThis will be a small and peaceful rally where we will aim to hand in a letter calling on the government to attend the 1MSP\, and this letter signed by over 1 million people and endorsed by the Dalai Lama\, calling for: \n\nan immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops;\na commitment from Russia and NATO to renounce the use of nuclear weapons in this conflict;\nstates to work toward the elimination of nuclear weapons.\n\nIf you have any questions about this rally and/or would like to attend\, email office@medact.org.

SUMMARY:EJ&H Housing and Health London Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Economic Justice Secure Housing campaign\, we are holding our first London Housing & Health meeting on Saturday 28 May at 10am at Ark Globe Academy\, London SE1 6AF. \n\nRegister below!\n\nWe will be meeting with HASL (Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth) and their members\, talking about the housing and health problems encountered by residents\, and elaborating a plan for healthcare workers to support their ongoing campaigns in South London.\n\nYou don’t have to be a regular members of the EJ&H group or a health worker to get involved\, everyone is welcome! If you’re unable to attend any of the meetings but keen to get involved or develop a local campaign\, please get in touch with Jordi.\n\nAbout the Secure Housing campaign\n\nThe Economic Justice & Health group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns (including housing-first approaches)\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters.\n\nYou can read more in our booklet The Public Health Case for Secure Housing.\n\nThe housing system in the UK is broken. Currently\, 1.6 million households are on social housing waiting lists and millions more are struggling to meet unaffordable rents in the private sector. In England\, the number of people experiencing core homelessness reached just under 220\,000 at the end of 2019.\nQuality of housing is another serious concern for public health.\n\nOne in five dwellings in England fail to meet decent standards for living\, with disregard for basic health and safety measures all too common. Housing is not equitably distributed in the UK: poorer households\, ethnic minority groups\, the elderly and adults with disabilities are all more likely to live in low-quality\, unsafe\, insecure housing.\n\nDespite all of this\, social and private rents are growing faster than the cost of living. Social housing stock is dwindling\, yet there are around five times more empty homes in the country than households in need of housing.\n\nSecure housing means housing that is accessible to all\, meets good living standards\, and where tenants are not forced to live under precarious conditions.\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. We are united in struggle with friends and colleagues within and beyond the NHS in organising to end housing-related health inequalities. We all play a crucial part in advocating for the systemic change needed to win high quality\, secure and affordable housing for all.\n\n[Registration has now closed]
