SUMMARY:Alternative Training on Prevent in Healthcare #2
DESCRIPTION:It is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships with all of our patients is essential to this work. \nHowever\, Prevent – with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation” – compromises all of this\, and is a source of harm and increased marginalisation. \nWhy is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about Prevent in safeguarding training? \nJoin our Alternative Training on Prevent online on Tuesday 25th May at 6pm to learn more\nThis training will seek to shed light on some unanswered questions about Prevent. We will hear from: \n\nMembers of Medact’s Securitisation of Health Group (SHG)\nSusan Wright ─ a crime and human rights barrister acting for defendants\, NGOs and other organisations on a range of public law matters\nReem Abu-Hayyeh ─ Campaigns and Policy Lead: Peace and Security at Medact\nDr Lyn Jenkins ─ a retired GP/ ophthalmologist\, bereavement support volunteer\, and heading up In My Own Bed Please\, a lobby group advocating for improved palliative care at home in emergencies\n\nThis event is particularly aimed at people who work or are training in\, study\, or who have worked in health. \nWe are aware that some people may feel some concern or worry about attending the event. As such\, we will be sending an email out to attendees prior to the event detailing how we will be seeking to make this event as safe and secure as possible. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Race & Health Justice Reading Group ─ "The Language of Race"
DESCRIPTION:In March\, the government’s report of the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities was published. The report has come under heavy criticism from charities working on racial equality to medical communities. While both BMJ and BMA expressed disappointment at and concerns with the biased and scientifically flawed report\, the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ response is the most courageous voice amongst medical authorities. They write: \nWe see this as another wasted opportunity for the Government. We recognise that people from ethnic minority groups will likely feel let down\, anger and sadness at the CRED report. \nAt Medact’s Race & Health Justice Group\, we were shaken and angered by the report and felt it was important to explore how we can stand up in the face of tools which may be used against us. \nFor our third reading group\, we would like to focus on ‘the language of race’ section of the report (pages 33-37). We wish to go deeper to explore the process of racialisation and reflect on our shared language of race when engaging in the discourse on race and racism. Without denying the importance of politics and power relations behind the report of the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities\, we also believe it reveals the harms that arise when race and racism as a historical and socio-cultural construct are denied in the lives of individuals and societies. \nHere are some questions to consider whilst reading the section of the report: \n\nWhat is happening here in the section titled ‘language of race’?\nHow do you relate to what is happening in this section? What themes stood out to you the most?\nWhat are your thoughts on the Commission’s proposed framework to distinguish between different forms of racial disparity and racism?\nWhat terms do we use when discussing racism? Are we using the same terms with the same meaning?\nHave you come across any responses to the report – how did these speak to you?\n\nPracticalities and accessibility:\n\nWe will circulate our group ground rules when you sign up\, and ask that you only join us if you are happy to commit to these principles.\nPlease read the article ahead of the reading group. If you would like an audio version\, or to read it collectively with others before the group\, please email us.\nWe expect most attendees will be people working in healthcare\, but the group is open to all.\nThe reading group will be on Zoom – we will run through logistics at the start of the meeting\, but if you are new to Zoom you can read this user guide. The Zoom application will download automatically when you click on a meeting link for the first time.\nWe can provide captioning and/or BSL interpreting\, please email us & we’ll arrange\nYou are welcome to have your camera on or off\, and to eat during the session\, but please do come willing to contribute to the discussion!\nWe will have a scheduled break half way through.\nWe will cap numbers in order to have a small and active discussion.\nPlease let us know if there is anything else we can do to support you to attend.\n\nTo sign up to the reading group\, or for any questions about it\, please email racehealthjustice@medact.org \nIf you are unable to join this session\, please do join our mailing list to hear about future sessions. \nRegister below to receive joining details for this online event \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:The climate crisis is a health crisis ─ what can health and social care workers in Yorkshire do?
DESCRIPTION:All over the world\, climate change is undermining the health of entire communities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has forecast that if serious action is not taken now to reduce emissions\, we may see as many as 250\,000 additional climate-related deaths each year between 2030-2050 alone. In Yorkshire\, studies have shown that climate change has already increased the likelihood of regular\, more severe flooding. \nThis is a crisis that concerns all of society\, but it does not impact us all equally. As we have seen\, communities and nations across the globe already feeling the impacts of climate change also tend to be the ones least responsible for it. It is in these communities that we are already seeing excess deaths due to extreme weather events\, increasing rates of things such as cardiovascular disease and respiratory conditions resulting from environmental injustices such as air pollution. \nJoin Medact Yorkshire for this webinar as we explore how those working in health and social care in Yorkshire can take action for a healthier\, greener and more just society\, one that prioritises the health and wellbeing of people and planet! \nWe’re really lucky to have an amazing lineup of incredible speakers joining us! \n\nMatthew Sawyer – GP and Sustainability Consultant\nAlexis Percival – Environmental and Sustainability Manager\, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust\nGroup for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (GALBA)\nAngela Harley – Medact Yorkshire\nJess Zollman-Thomas – Medact Sheffield\nMia Thomas – Medact Leeds\nChristian Vassie – City of York councillor and ‘Climate Champion’\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Leeds call to action: organising for Health for a Green New Deal
DESCRIPTION:Calling all health and social care workers and students in Leeds!\nOur economy is making the people of Leeds sick. Come and learn about the Green New Deal and why as health and social care workers it is vital we organise and use our voice to safeguard our patient’s and our environment’s health. During this online event we will share information about the Health for a Green New Deal movement and we will join together to plan campaign actions to take forward as an active and connected community of health and social-care workers. \nMedact Leeds is a local group of healthcare workers which mobilise and campaign to allow all people in Leeds to truly achieve and access their right to health. We believe that it is the duty of healthcare professionals to take a broad view of health and part of our role in caring for our patients must include fighting the inequalities within our society which creates and perpetuates poor health outcomes. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:IPPNW Student Discussion on "The Vow from Hiroshima" and the Importance of Medical Student Activism
DESCRIPTION:  \n“The Vow from Hiroshima” is an intimate portrait of Setsuko Thurlow\, a passionate\, 89-year-old survivor of the atomic bombing. Her moving story is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second generation survivor\, Mitchie Takeuchi. “The Vow” will be available to stream on 7-8 August for our event’s participants. \nWith introductory remarks from the filmmakers Mitchie Takeuchi and Susan Strickler followed by comments from Hiroshima survivor Setsuko Thurlow in a conversation with IPPNW international medical students movement from Kenya\, India\, Russia\, United States and Germany. Register now to join the conversation on 9 August. \nAs a 13 year old child\, Setsuko miraculously survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima\, an experience that shaped her life forever as a tireless activist for nuclear abolition. The film is a timely exploration of the global dangers of nuclear weapons and provides an insider’s perspective as we see Setsuko work with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The culmination of Setsuko’s decades of activism is her acceptance speech at the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo and the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2021. 2021 marks the 76th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. \nRegister now to access the film stream and discussion

SUMMARY:Health Action for the Green New Deal Bill
DESCRIPTION:What’s happening?\nThis Autumn\, the Decarbonisation and Economic Strategy Bill (otherwise known as the Green New Deal Bill) returns to Parliament. The Bill aims to end licensing for new fossil fuel projects\, promote the rapid decarbonisation of our economy\, support healthy food systems\, safeguard natural habitats\, restore biodiversity and tackle inequality\, all the while investing in millions of good quality green jobs! \nThe Bill presents a unique opportunity for the promotion of both public and planetary health ─ one in which the health community has a crucial role to play. The changes we’re calling for are not small. To win\, we need to build public support to put pressure on MPs to do the right thing. \nWhat will the action involve?\nThis action will involve setting up a local ‘Climate Clinic’ to engage the public on the health impacts of the climate crisis and encourage them to take action by signing a postcard to their MP asking that they support the Green New Deal Bill. \nWe’re encouraging groups to run their Climate Clinics on either Saturday 25th September or Saturday 2nd October – but if this isn’t possible for you/your group\, please do still sign up\, it’ll be okay to run it on another day that suits you. \nWe’ve produced an action guide that explains the step-by-step process of how to set up your own Climate Clinic. Additionally\, we will be running training calls on 13th and 27th September going over the process of setting up a Climate Clinic and how to have persuasive conversations with members of the public. \nSign up now to join the action!\nThis signup has now closed!

SUMMARY:AGM 2021
DESCRIPTION:The annual Medact members meeting is just around the corner! This is the second we’re holding online to help us stay safe from the coronavirus\, but we have a packed agenda including important business for how Medact runs. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\nIt was wonderful to see so many of you online at last year’s meeting\, and this year we’re looking forward to bringing so many members together again\, both veterans as well as new faces! Over 200 new members have joined in the last year – a record! This meeting is an opportunity for us all to get together and consider the overall running of the organisation. \n\n\n\nThe day will include: \n\n\n\n\na chance to hear from a number of our campaigns and member groups\n\n\n\na menu of opportunities to get involved in the coming months\n\n\n\na discussion and voting on Medact’s organisational position on nuclear power (see more)\n\n\n\nother essential business including scrutiny of our finances and election of Trustees (see more)\n\n\n\n\nNon-members are welcome to join the meeting\, but you must be a member to propose and vote on motions or in elections. If you would like to get involved in running Medact\, why not join today? \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP to receive final papers and joining details: \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nMotions\n\n\n\nWe have one motion on the agenda\, relating to Medact’s position on nuclear power: \n\n\n\n\n‘It is proposed Medact adopt the following policy position: \n\n\n\nGiven the high costs of civil nuclear power\, its close association with the military and the detrimental and prolonged effects of the nuclear industry on the global environment; and given the rapid increase in the much cheaper and more efficient sources of low-carbon renewable energy which could supply the bulk of all sources of power for the UK\, thereby completely filling the gap left by the withdrawal of fossil fuels: the UK should abandon all plans to expand its civil nuclear power programme\, and proceed vigorously with the development of renewable sources – wind\, solar\, geothermal and ocean.’ \n\n\n\nProposed: Frank Boulton \n\n\n\nSeconded: Bimal Khadka \n\n\n\n\nMembers may wish to refer to our consultation briefing on the issue when considering this motion. \n\n\n\nTrustee elections\n\n\n\nThree of our current Trustees have completed a first three-year term and will be standing for re-election: \n\n\n\n\nKitty Mohan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKitty is a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control based in Oxford. She lives south of Edinburgh\, coordinates the Scottish group and is a member of Health for a Green New Deal. She is always looking for opportunities to write and speak about health professionals’ role in disarmament\, especially ridding the world of nuclear weapons\, and in the climate emergency. This has included offering SSCs on these issues to Edinburgh medical students. \n\n\n\nCommitted to the value of the arts and humanities for improving medical training and practice\, and for health professionals’ wellbeing\, she is co-editor of “Tools of the Trade”\, a little book of poetry gifted to all Scottish medical graduates\, and author of “The Wellbeing Toolkit for Doctors”. \n\n\n\nLesley has served as a trustee for three years\, is proud of what Medact is achieving\, is continuing to learn and would appreciate being considered for a second term. \n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret Jackson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret is a GP in a small but busy practice in rural North Yorkshire\, as well as a GP trainer and co-ordinator for teaching in her practice for medical students from Hull York Medical School. \n\n\n\nShe has co-ordinated the Medact Yorkshire group since its inception in 2017\, with a focus on campaigns around fracking and fossil fuel divestment. \n\n\n\n\nOur current Treasurer\, who is currently a co-opted Trustee\, is also being put forward for election for a 3-year term: \n\n\n\n\nHannah Wright\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHannah is a data and analytics professional\, currently working for Iris in London.
