SUMMARY:London Housing & Health meeting (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Medact’s EJ Housing & Health Group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters. \n\n\n\nLast month\, Medact members joined tenants from across the country with the Healthy Homes Coalition at a lively protest outside the so-called Affordable Housing Awards in Old Trafford on Friday 17 November – a grotesque\, self-congratulatory awards ceremony for landlords whose neglect is putting tenants’ health at risk.  \n\n\n\nOver the past few weeks Medact members in the London Housing and Health Group have been supporting a group of tenants in east London that reported suffering from health problems as a result of their housing conditions. After a session facilitated by the local tenants association and Medact\, tenants decided to come together to campaign against their landlord to force them to carry out the necessary disrepairs. It has been a pleasure working with Fatima\, one of the tenants\, and Channel 4 to tell their story and how they are fighting back. \n\n\n\nMeet other Medact members and health workers interested in our Housing & Health work\, hear about our ongoing campaign and organising work and find out about how to get involved! \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be followed by a social in Dalston. Come join us! \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will be hearing from the members involved in our Housing and Health campaign\, get updates on our local organising work in Harrow\, news on our work with the Homes for Us coalition\, and help us develop our next steps and identify other potential campaigns in London.  \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to be a regular member of the EJ&H group or a health worker to get involved\, everyone is welcome! If you’re unable to attend any of the meetings but keen to get involved or develop a local campaign you can contact Jordi: jordilopezbotey@medact.org \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe housing system in the UK is broken. Currently\, 1.6 million households are on social housing waiting lists and millions more are struggling to meet unaffordable rents in the private sector.  One in five dwellings in England fail to meet decent standards for living\, with disregard for basic health and safety measures all too common. Housing is not equitably distributed in the UK: poorer households\, ethnic minority groups\, the elderly and adults with disabilities are all more likely to live in low-quality\, unsafe\, insecure housing. Despite all of this\, social and private rents are growing faster than the cost of living. Social housing stock is dwindling\, yet there are around five times more empty homes in the country than households in need of housing. \n\n\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. We are united in struggle with friends and colleagues within and beyond the NHS in organising to end housing-related health inequalities. SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health Group: December Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is the securitisation of health?\n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \n\n\n\nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation here. \n\n\n\nAbout the group\n\n\n\nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. New members are welcome!  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org. This meeting will be hybrid with the opportunity to attend in-person at our office in Bethnal Green. \n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:All Care For All People – A People’s Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Part of Healing Justice Ldn’s festival of events ‘Rehearsing Freedoms‘ (Oct 11 – Nov 11) \n\n\n\nPlease note this event has been postponed from November 11 to December 10. \n\n\n\nThis is a visioning and action session\, which will support participants to build towards radical abolitionist public health. Taking place on the last day of the festival\, this people’s gathering and assembly space invites us to collectively imagine what health for us all\, as determined by us\, looks like. The session will ground us back into the intentions of the overall festival\, and will ask the questions: \n\n\n\n– What is health\, and what are the roots health grows from?– How does the state shape our health? What role might the state play in accessing health and healing – if any?– What might our visions of health look and feel like?– How can we rehearse and practise those visions right now? \n\n\n\nThis workshop will encourage us to think\, feel\, draw\, write and play through these questions\, building with all that has come before and inviting in new offerings. The space will be held facilitated by Kavian Kulasabanathan\, Ben Eder\, Dr Stephanie Davis\, and Farzana Khan \n\n\n\nThis event will be BSL interpreted. \n\n\n\nICF @ Block 336336 Brixton RoadLondon SW9 7AA \n\n\n\n\nReserve your free place here

SUMMARY:Researching state violence: Deaths by Welfare x Criminalising Distress
DESCRIPTION:For this edition of the Medact Research Network Quarterly meeting\, we’re excited to welcome guest speaker Dr China Mills\, who manages the Deaths by Welfare Project at Healing Justice London\, to introduce us to this project and its impact and implications for health justice work. \n\n\n\nMembers of the Medact Research Network will then present preliminary findings from our Criminalising Distress project. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also discuss the parallels between the two—especially the violence of state neglect towards those viewed as a burden on resources. We think this is going to be a great event\, so register below! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChina Mills leads the Deaths by Welfare project at Healing justice Ldn – researching welfare state violence alongside those most impacted. She is committed to research practice that cultivates and restores dignity\, belonging\, safety\, and that is abolitionist – in community with those harmed by state violence. She has published widely on state\, and corporate\, violence\, structural oppression\, suicide and mental health\, and is the author of Decolonising Global Mental Health (published by Routledge). She is also a member of the Poverty\, Power\, and Stigma design team at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation\, working alongside people with lived experience of poverty. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Leeds: Migration is life! How do we resist borders in the everyday?
DESCRIPTION:Join local migrant justice organisations & community groups for an afternoon of practical workshops on resisting the Hostile Environment\, and a screening of ‘NHS Borderlands’. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re all Leeds aren’t we? \n\n\n\nWhoever we are and wherever we come from\, most strive to treat others how we want to be treated. While the people in power continue to show that they don’t care about us\, we must show that we do care about one another. \n\n\n\n\nSign up on Eventbrite!\n\n\n\n\nLocal Leeds migrant justice organisations and community groups have come together to bring this afternoon of practical workshops to learn about how we can resist violent borders that have been brought into our everyday lives through the government’s cruel Hostile Environment policies. \n\n\n\nPAFRAS\, Racial Justice Network\, Yorkshire Resists\, Stop the Scan\, Leeds Anti-Raids Action and Patients Not Passport will be sharing their expertise and practical tools for resistance as well as raising the voices of those who are subject to Hostile Environment policies. We will also be screening the award-winning Bare Life Film’s NHS Borderlands\, an investigative documentary exploring the human impact of NHS charges on migrants. The short film explores the story of Angela\, who fled persecution in Zimbabwe only to be subjected to Hostile Environment immigration policies in the UK and charged £8\,000 for vital medical care. \n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at both people who are subject to immigration control as well as those who wish to learn more about how they can stand in solidarity with migrant communities who are coming under increasing attacks from both people in power and the far-right. \n\n\n\nThis event is ticketed and you will only be allowed entry with a ticket. We ask those who can afford to donate to bring a suggested donation of £10 so we can run further events for the community. Sign up on Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Freedom Of Information: Knowledge For Liberation
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Healing Justice Ldn’s ‘Rehearsing Freedoms‘ festival.\n\n\n\nIn this workshop led by Medact’s Research Manager Hil Aked\, participants will rehearse the liberatory potential – and limitations – of using freedom of information requests to empower ourselves with knowledge. Participants will discuss the politics of knowledge and power and information asymmetries between communities and the state. They will also learn practical skills for trying to start redressing that balance. There will be a skillshare element and an interactive element where these skills will be collectively applied to hypothetical case studies. Participants will leave with a greater confidence and capacity to challenge oppression in the form of state secrecy and opacity\, part of paving the way for more openness\, transparency and freedom. \n\n\n\nIf you require additional access measures to enable your participation\, including BSL interpretation please email info@healingjusticeldn.org. Inline with our commitment to disability justice\, we will try to accommodate as much as possible. \n\n\n\nICF @ Block 336336 Brixton RoadLondon SW9 7AA \n\n\n\nReserve your space

SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health group: October Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid meeting: Online and at Medact’s office in Hoxton\, London \n\n\n\nWhat is the securitisation of health?\n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org  \n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Stop the war on Gaza! Health Blocs at national demonstrations for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join other health workers marching on Friday 20th October and Saturday October 21st to stand in solidarity with Palestine and call for an immediate ceasefire. \n\n\n\nThis week has seen horrific attacks and human rights abuses as Israel’s bombardment of Gaza intensifies\, following Hamas’ attack and kidnapping of Israeli citizens on Saturday 7th October. \n\n\n\nUpward of three thousand Palestinian civilians have been killed\, with sources estimating almost half of fatalities being women and children\, and many thousands more injured and without access to water\, food or fuel.  \n\n\n\nGaza’s already under-resourced health system is under intense pressure with hospitals coming under fire\, overcrowding leaving patients suffering on the floor\, and a severe lack of essential equipment. We know health workers themselves are also among the fatalities of targeted attacks on hospitals. \n\n\n\nHealth workers must take a stand against the violence and against the targeting of health infrastructure in clear breach of international law. It is vital that we come together to show the UK government that it must end its complicity and do all it can to bring about a ceasefire! \n\n\n\nKnow your rights: Read this information from Netpol on marching. \n\n\n\nFind details for how to get involved in the health-worker blocs below. These health blocs have been coordinated by health workers in the movement for health justice. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in organising a health workers bloc at a solidarity demonstration near you\, in a location not listed below\, get in touch: office@medact.org! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLondon\n\n\n\nWe’ll be joining a health workers bloc at the National March for Palestine – Stop the War on Gaza!  \n\n\n\nWhen: 11:30am\, to join the main demonstration at 12:00pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Marble Arch Fountains\, Marble Arch\, London – (map) \n\n\n\nWear: If you feel comfortable\, wear things that identify you as a health worker\, scrubs\, stethoscope etc. The current forecast is cold and clear so dress warmly. \n\n\n\nRemember: wear sturdy shoes and bring snacks\, water and a fully charged phone. \n\n\n\nJoin the WhatsApp broadcast group: \n\n\n\n\nJoin group 1 (this group is now full!)\n\n\n\nJoin group 2 (use this one if you can’t join 1!)\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to buddy with someone else coming on the demo\, or you just want to have a chat beforehand\, let us know at jamesskinner@medact.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSheffield\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Sheffield City Hall\, S1 2JA \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Jordi – jordilopezbotey@medact.org (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorth East\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: BBC Newcastle Broadcasting House\, Barrack Road\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE2 4NS  \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Kate – katebernard@medact.org (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlasgow\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 2pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Buchanan Steps\, 229 Buchanan St\, Glasgow\, G1 2NG \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Marina – marina.politis@gmail.com (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeeds\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, meet at 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: JD Sports Briggate\, Leeds\, LS1 6HFMarch at 12.30 to BCC Yorkshire\, St Peter’s Square\, Leeds\, LS9 8AH \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Emily – Escott.emilyj@gmail.com (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!)

SUMMARY:Health workers at Stop Rosebank\, Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:The UK Government has just approved the Rosebank oil field. \n\n\n\nAs healthcare students and health workers\, this directly matters to us. Join us on Saturday October 7th to show that the health community will not stand for new gas and oil. The protest starts at noon\, and we will be meeting at 11.45 outside Queen’s Street station. \n\n\n\nPlease feel free to come in scrubs/stethoscopes\, and create placards relevant to the climate crisis as a health crisis. \n\n\n\nThe WHO has forecast that without immediate and effective action\, climate change will cause 250\,000 additional deaths each year between 2030 and 2050 alone. Just like COVID-19\, it is those with the least that are being affected the most by the climate crisis. \n\n\n\nAs direct witnesses to the health crises we face\, we must take action to show that this destruction is not inevitable. There is no planetary health without human health\, and wherever you work in healthcare\, whatever your role in speciality\, it will impact us and our patients. \n\n\n\nPeople right across the UK want a reliable\, affordable energy supply\, not more oil and gas that puts all our futures at risk. Join this protest to pressure the UK to reverse their decision\, and use every tool we can to delay and eventually stop this field. \n\n\n\nEmail Marina if you want to get in touch before Saturday.

SUMMARY:The Oil Machine – FREE film screening with Medact Leeds
DESCRIPTION:Explore our economic\, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels – can we break the bind in time? \n\n\n\n\n\nHow can we break our addition to oil? Join Medact Leeds for a screening of the new film The Oil Machine at 7pm on Thursday 5th October in Beeston Village Community Centre as part of the South Leeds Green Film Festival for an inspiring screening and conversation on our energy future. \n\n\n\n\nSign up on Eventbrite!\n\n\n\n\nThe Oil Machine explores our economic\, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil & gas. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil? \n\n\n\nThe film brings together a wide range of voices from oil company executives\, economists\, young activists\, oil workers\, pension fund managers\, and considers how this machine can be tamed\, dismantled or repurposed. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.theoilmachine.org/
