SUMMARY:Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World
DESCRIPTION:An evening celebrating the memory of Dr Martin Hartog  \n\n\n\nJoin Medact at St. Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace for an evening lecture from Dr Carlos Umaña. We welcome Medact members\, health workers\, students and particularly young campaigners as we reflect on campaigning for a nuclear weapons free world. \n\n\n\nThere is an increasing urgency to strengthen our campaigning movement\, and build closer connections and coalition with movements dedicated to climate justice\, anti-militarism and anti-imperialism. \n\n\n\nFollowing the lecture\, we’ll hear a discussion between Carlos and UK-based campaigners for disarmament\, chaired by Marion Birch\, on the challenges and opportunities for growing the movement for nuclear disarmament in our current political context. The evening will close with a drinks reception for attendees.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Carlos Umaña is a general practitioner\, former local health director\, and epidemiological surveillance officer with the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. Serving until recently as IPPNW co-president\, he is also on the ICAN International Steering Group. He is the current president of IPPNW Costa Rica\, founder of Artists for Peace (2014) in Costa Rica\, and president of the activist group “Peace and Diversity”. He is also the recipient of the 2018 “Alan Turing LGBTIQ Visibility Award” for Social Organization. \n\n\n\nSince 2013\, he has worked by campaigning and lobbying for awareness on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons (HINW) and support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). He has worked closely with governments as part of the Costa Rican delegation in the 2014 NPT PrepCom and the 2015 NPT Review Conference\, and has worked with the network of regional peace organisations to organise conferences and roundtables on the HINW and the TPNW.Cordelia Vesely campaigns locally\, nationally and internationally for a range of health\, gender and environmental justice issues\, including disarmament\, demilitarisation and international humanitarian law. She has just finished her term as co-director of Students for Global Health UK\, where she built student capacity in advocacy and policy making. Her work has taken her to the UN and been recognised by organisations like the IPPNW for whom she has led European sessions on human rights and peace.Jake Atkinson is a campaigner on issues related to inequality and human rights. As Senior Adviser at STOPAIDS\, he co-convened UK and global civil society alliances campaigning to improve equitable access to medicines\, protect human rights\, and improve funding to tackle infectious diseases. He was also part of the first Steering Committee of Youth for TPNW\, the global movement of young people in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons from 2021 to 2024. He currently works for Tax Justice UK with a focus on taxing the super rich and big polluters\, and on securing a bold United Nations Tax Convention.  \n\n\n\nMarion Birch has worked on public health and healthcare programmes in countries affected by armed conflict and disasters for 20 years\, principally in Sudan\, Mozambique\, Angola and Sri Lanka. In the UK she has worked as a training manager\, health advisor and consultant\, and for eight years was director of the global health charity Medact. Presently Marion teaches and examines part time at University College London (Institute for Global Health and the Global Business School for Health)\, at City St George’s (University of London)\, and at the Society of Apothecaries. She is editor of the Routledge / Taylor & Francis journal Medicine\, Conflict and Survival which is affiliated with IPPNW and their UK affiliate Medact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn memory of Martin Hartog (1931-2023) \n\n\n\nThis event is made possible thanks to the generous donation of a founding member of Medact\, the late Dr Martin Hartog (1931–2023). Martin was the first chair of Medact and an active member of the Nuclear Weapons Group until his death in July 2023. \n\n\n\nThe horror of any use of nuclear weapons was close to Martin’s heart for many years. He was deeply involved with the Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (MCANW) until it merged with the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW) to form Medact in 1992. Martin served as the Chair of Medact in those early years\, and was an active member particularly with our Nuclear Weapons Group for the rest of his life. \n\n\n\nMartin felt passionately about the need to introduce and involve younger generations of campaigners in the movement for nuclear disarmament. His legacy donation to the group contributed to enabling recruitment of a project coordinator for the Don’t Bank on the Bomb! UK campaign\, and additionally supporting this public lecture. Medact is the UK affiliate of International Physicians for the  Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW)

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Concert For Peace presented by the MPD Chamber Ensemble \n\n\n\nThe Autumn Concert for Peace’s programme is full of joy and optimism. In its blending of expressive melodies with masterly control in combining the three instruments\, Schubert’s youthful String Trio recalls Mozart’s masterpiece\, the Divertimento K 563. Three duos for clarinet and bassoon have been attributed to Beethoven\, but their origin is not completely clear. Whoever the composer\, they abound in good humour and witty interplay between the instruments; No. 2 is typical\, and contains a particularly touching slow movement. Nielsen’s music is often quirky and original; the Serenata in vano portrays a group of musicians who attempt to serenade a lady\, but when that fails\, they go home playing a jaunty tune. \n\n\n\nBeethoven’s Septet achieved immediate success – something he later resented\, when the public failed to appreciate some of his more serious and profound works. It is genial and uncomplicated\, and provides opportunities for each player to shine. The final movement ends with a breathless flurry of triplets for the violin. \n\n\n\nInterval speaker: Dr. Swee Chai Ang Co-Founder\, Medical Aid for Palestinians \n\n\n\nProgrammeSchubert String Trio in B-flat\, D 471Beethoven Duo in F for clarinet and bassoonNielsen Serenata in vanoBeethoven Septet in E-flat major\, Op. 20 \n\n\n\nStandard £20 Concession (Over 65s\, Students\, Unwaged) £15All proceeds donated to organisations in the peace movement.

SUMMARY:Alternative Training on Prevent
DESCRIPTION:It is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships between patients and health workers is essential to this work. However\, the Prevent Duty – with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation” – compromises all of this.  \n\n\n\nAs we’ve outlined in our work\, Prevent is a source of harm and increased marginalisation\, particularly for Muslim and racialised communities\, as well as those with mental health conditions.  \n\n\n\nSo\, why is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about the harms of Prevent in safeguarding training? \n\n\n\nJoin us for this series of Alternative Training on Prevent to learn more\, and find out how you can add your voice to the movement to end the Prevent Duty. Together we call for #CareNotSurvelliance! \n\n\n\nThis event is particularly aimed at people who work or are training in\, study\, or who have worked in health – though everyone from our movement for health justice\, interested in learning more\, is welcome! If you have any questions or concerns ahead of this event – feel free to email me\, sarahlasoye@medact.org.

SUMMARY:Palestine\, Health and the Limits of Humanitarianism
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a health worker in the face of genocide? \n\n\n\nJoin us for a powerful political education webinar on Palestine and the politics of humanitarianism\, where we’ll explore the role of health workers in confronting the ongoing genocide in Gaza – and the complicity of the British state in that violence. \n\n\n\nThrough this conversation\, we’ll cut through the depoliticised narratives often used to obscure the reality of Israel’s settler-colonial project\, and instead confront the deliberate destruction of Gaza’s health system\, the use of starvation as a weapon of war\, and the urgent need for international solidarity. \n\n\n\nFor this online event\, we’ll hear from health workers and organisers committed to naming the violence\, challenging the limits of humanitarianism and standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to liberation. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nLayth Hanbali\, community health researcher\n\n\n\nGhassan Abu-Sittah\, trauma and reconstructive surgeon\n\n\n\nHannah Caller\, community paediatrician \n\n\n\nJames Smith\, emergency physician\n\n\n\n\nHost: Rhiannon Mihranian Osborne\, foundation doctor and member of Health Workers for a Free Palestine \n\n\n\nThis event is especially valuable for health workers\, but it’s open to everyone – so please share widely! This is part of Medact’s Learning for Action series that aims to equip us with the knowledge and skills we need to win a more just world.

SUMMARY:No Palantir in the NHS - South Yorkshire public meeting
DESCRIPTION:Medact Sheffield are hosting a public meeting bringing together stakeholders\, concerned residents\, and health workers across South Yorkshire\, to discuss how we can take collective action to keep Palantir out of our NHS.  \n\n\n\nPalantir is a US-based tech firm specialising in data. The use of their software extends from military targeting in Palestine\, leading to them being named by the UN as a corporate actor in the genocide in Gaza\, to racist predictive policing tactics and many other ethically intolerable practices. \n\n\n\nSince 2021\, NHS England and the UK Government have been entangled in deals with Palantir lacking any transparency. In 2023\, they were awarded a contract for the national rollout of the ‘Federated Data Platform’ (FDP)\, a platform that looks to process patient data between different sectors of healthcare. Many of the South Yorkshire NHS healthcare providers are in the process of adopting the FDP.  \n\n\n\nWe do not believe that the NHS should be doing deals with the likes of Palantir. They cannot be trusted\, they are enabling a genocide\, deals like this will only deepen societal inequalities\, and it will further entrench and continue the insidious privatisation of our NHS.  \n\n\n\nIt is possible to stop the rollout of the FDP! Health trusts and boards have the power to say no to the FDP and opt for an alternative\, as we are already seeing in other areas of the UK. We believe this is possible in South Yorkshire\, but only with you and collective action! Let’s send a strong message to NHS England and the UK Government that Palantir and companies like it are not welcome in our NHS.  \n\n\n\nJoin us to find out more about the campaign and how we can strategically take action within South Yorkshire to say NO PALANTIR IN THE NHS.Doors open at 6:30pm with food provided\, and the event will begin at 7:00pm. It’s a hybrid event\, taking place in person at the Quaker Meeting House and online via Zoom.If you can’t make this public meeting but want to find out more\, contact us on sheffield@medact.org or check out the toolkit here https://www.medact.org/2024/resources/toolkits/no-palantir-in-the-nhs-campaign-toolkit/

SUMMARY:Unlearning Medical Education
DESCRIPTION:This member-run workshop brings health workers together for a practical discussion about how – and why – we can start to ‘unlearn’ oppressive systems underpinning our own medical educations. We’ll consider who’s harmed and uplifted by medical pedagogy\, how our education shows up in our practices today\, and start working collectively towards alternative ways of learning towards health justice. This session will feature group discussions and a critical conversation between Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan and Dr Jo Hartland about their personal\, intellectual\, and professional experiences of medical learning. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is hosted by Medact’s Political Education Working Group. Spaces are limited to encourage group discussion – reserve your spot ASAP! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Jo Hartland (they/them) is an Associate Professor of Health Justice Education and School Deputy Education Director at Bristol Medical School. Drawing on their previous work as Doctor in the NHS\, their teaching on health justice within medicine is co-produced in partnership with marginalised communities\, bringing the voices of those historically excluded from healthcare into curriculum development. Nationally they are the Co-Chair for the Executive Board of the Medical Schools Council (MSC) Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Alliance. They are also an award-winning queer health activist\, and in their own time led the development of the GLADD UK Medical Schools Charter on So-Called LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy which led to their attendance at parliament briefing MPs on these issues. In recognition of their work they were awarded a 2024 National Teaching Fellowship Award and the 2023 Attitude Pride Award. Their research\, writing and public speaking explores themes of justice and power in medical education. They hope to use their experience and platform as a disabled and queer educator to role model authentic and meaningful work in healthcare education leadership\, inspiring students and colleagues to join in with marginalised communities fighting for social justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Rageshri Dhairyawan (she/her) is a doctor\, researcher and writer. She qualified in 2004 and is an NHS Consultant in HIV Medicine at Barts Health NHS Trust and Deputy Director of the SHARE Collaborative for Health Equity\, Queen Mary University of London. Her clinical work\, research and advocacy focus on improving health equity. Rageshri has held numerous national charity and policy positions and regularly works with patient organisations. She currently chairs the British HIV Association EEDI Group and steering group of 4M Mentor Mothers CIC. Rageshri is the author of Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing (Trapeze\, 2024) longlisted for the Bread and Roses Prize for Radical Non-Fiction. She is an inaugural Wellcome Collection x Spread the Word non-fiction writer awardee (2022).

SUMMARY:Build the Health Movement for Housing Justice
DESCRIPTION:Skyrocketing housing costs are undermining people’s ability to live stable\, healthy lives. Unaffordable rents force people out of their communities\, entrench poverty\, worsen health inequalities\, and push thousands of families into homelessness each year. \n\n\n\nThis crisis is not inevitable. Before the 1980s\, governments took responsibility for keeping rents affordable and invested at scale in secure\, high-quality council housing. These policies provided stability for millions and helped build strong\, resilient communities. \n\n\n\nWe also know that change is possible today. Recent reforms — including the abolition of Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions — were secured through sustained campaigning and show the impact of collective action. But the core issue at the heart of the housing crisis remains unaddressed: affordability. \n\n\n\nThat’s why a broad coalition of housing groups – including Homes for All\, London Renters Union\, Homes for Us Alliance\, and Greater Manchester Tenants Union — have come together to call for a National Housing Demonstration in London in Spring 2026\, demanding: \n\n\n\n\nRent Controls\n\n\n\nPublic investment in a mass council house building programme\n\n\n\n\nOn Monday 2nd March at 6.30pm\, we will be hosting a call to: \n\n\n\n\nFind out more about the strategy of the Homes for Us Alliance\n\n\n\nGet involved in mobilising the health community as part of a growing national network\n\n\n\nJoin the communications group shaping messaging and media interventions\n\n\n\nHelp ensure health justice remains at the heart of the housing movement
