SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health group: October Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid meeting: Online and at Medact’s office in Hoxton\, London \n\n\n\nWhat is the securitisation of health?\n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \n\n\n\nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation here. \n\n\n\nAbout the group\n\n\n\nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. New members are welcome!  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org  \n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Stop the war on Gaza! Health Blocs at national demonstrations for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join other health workers marching on Friday 20th October and Saturday October 21st to stand in solidarity with Palestine and call for an immediate ceasefire. \n\n\n\nThis week has seen horrific attacks and human rights abuses as Israel’s bombardment of Gaza intensifies\, following Hamas’ attack and kidnapping of Israeli citizens on Saturday 7th October. \n\n\n\nUpward of three thousand Palestinian civilians have been killed\, with sources estimating almost half of fatalities being women and children\, and many thousands more injured and without access to water\, food or fuel.  \n\n\n\nGaza’s already under-resourced health system is under intense pressure with hospitals coming under fire\, overcrowding leaving patients suffering on the floor\, and a severe lack of essential equipment. We know health workers themselves are also among the fatalities of targeted attacks on hospitals. \n\n\n\nHealth workers must take a stand against the violence and against the targeting of health infrastructure in clear breach of international law. It is vital that we come together to show the UK government that it must end its complicity and do all it can to bring about a ceasefire! \n\n\n\nKnow your rights: Read this information from Netpol on marching. \n\n\n\nFind details for how to get involved in the health-worker blocs below. These health blocs have been coordinated by health workers in the movement for health justice. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in organising a health workers bloc at a solidarity demonstration near you\, in a location not listed below\, get in touch: office@medact.org! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLondon\n\n\n\nWe’ll be joining a health workers bloc at the National March for Palestine – Stop the War on Gaza!  \n\n\n\nWhen: 11:30am\, to join the main demonstration at 12:00pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Marble Arch Fountains\, Marble Arch\, London – (map) \n\n\n\nWear: If you feel comfortable\, wear things that identify you as a health worker\, scrubs\, stethoscope etc. The current forecast is cold and clear so dress warmly. \n\n\n\nRemember: wear sturdy shoes and bring snacks\, water and a fully charged phone. \n\n\n\nJoin the WhatsApp broadcast group: \n\n\n\n\nJoin group 1 (this group is now full!)\n\n\n\nJoin group 2 (use this one if you can’t join 1!)\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to buddy with someone else coming on the demo\, or you just want to have a chat beforehand\, let us know at jamesskinner@medact.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSheffield\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Sheffield City Hall\, S1 2JA \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Jordi – jordilopezbotey@medact.org (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorth East\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: BBC Newcastle Broadcasting House\, Barrack Road\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE2 4NS  \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Kate – katebernard@medact.org (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlasgow\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, 2pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Buchanan Steps\, 229 Buchanan St\, Glasgow\, G1 2NG \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Marina – marina.politis@gmail.com (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeeds\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 21st Oct\, meet at 12pm \n\n\n\nWhere: JD Sports Briggate\, Leeds\, LS1 6HFMarch at 12.30 to BCC Yorkshire\, St Peter’s Square\, Leeds\, LS9 8AH \n\n\n\nPoint of contact: Emily – Escott.emilyj@gmail.com (get in touch to join the WhatsApp group!)

SUMMARY:Health workers at Stop Rosebank\, Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:The UK Government has just approved the Rosebank oil field. \n\n\n\nAs healthcare students and health workers\, this directly matters to us. Join us on Saturday October 7th to show that the health community will not stand for new gas and oil. The protest starts at noon\, and we will be meeting at 11.45 outside Queen’s Street station. \n\n\n\nPlease feel free to come in scrubs/stethoscopes\, and create placards relevant to the climate crisis as a health crisis. \n\n\n\nThe WHO has forecast that without immediate and effective action\, climate change will cause 250\,000 additional deaths each year between 2030 and 2050 alone. Just like COVID-19\, it is those with the least that are being affected the most by the climate crisis. \n\n\n\nAs direct witnesses to the health crises we face\, we must take action to show that this destruction is not inevitable. There is no planetary health without human health\, and wherever you work in healthcare\, whatever your role in speciality\, it will impact us and our patients. \n\n\n\nPeople right across the UK want a reliable\, affordable energy supply\, not more oil and gas that puts all our futures at risk. Join this protest to pressure the UK to reverse their decision\, and use every tool we can to delay and eventually stop this field. \n\n\n\nEmail Marina if you want to get in touch before Saturday.

SUMMARY:The Oil Machine – FREE film screening with Medact Leeds
DESCRIPTION:Explore our economic\, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels – can we break the bind in time? \n\n\n\n\n\nHow can we break our addition to oil? Join Medact Leeds for a screening of the new film The Oil Machine at 7pm on Thursday 5th October in Beeston Village Community Centre as part of the South Leeds Green Film Festival for an inspiring screening and conversation on our energy future. \n\n\n\n\nSign up on Eventbrite!\n\n\n\n\nThe Oil Machine explores our economic\, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil & gas. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil? \n\n\n\nThe film brings together a wide range of voices from oil company executives\, economists\, young activists\, oil workers\, pension fund managers\, and considers how this machine can be tamed\, dismantled or repurposed. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.theoilmachine.org/

SUMMARY:London Housing and Health Meeting (online)
DESCRIPTION:*Due to planned TfL strikes on the London Underground\, this meeting will now take place online via Zoom* \n\n\n\nMedact’s EJ Housing & Health Group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters. \n\n\n\nSince our last meeting the group has continued with its local work in Harrow\, with outreach and flyering sessions with local organisers and tenants as well as media work\, and has supported the London Renters Union with delivery of events in Brent and other locations. Over the summer\, a Housing and Health Research Group was also formed. \n\n\n\nIn this meeting\, you will be hearing from the members involved in our work\, get updates on our local organising work in North West London\, and help us develop the next steps and identify potential campaigns in other boroughs. \n\n\n\nWe will also be joined by representatives from the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA)\, who will be speaking about their Healthy Homes Campaign pushing for introduction of a Healthy Homes Bill. \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to be a regular member of the EJ&H group or a health worker to get involved\, everyone is welcome! If you’re unable to attend any of the meetings but keen to get involved or develop a local campaign you can contact Jordi: jordilopezbotey@medact.org \n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nBackground \n\n\n\nThe housing system in the UK is broken. Currently\, 1.6 million households are on social housing waiting lists and millions more are struggling to meet unaffordable rents in the private sector.  One in five dwellings in England fail to meet decent standards for living\, with disregard for basic health and safety measures all too common. Housing is not equitably distributed in the UK: poorer households\, ethnic minority groups\, the elderly and adults with disabilities are all more likely to live in low-quality\, unsafe\, insecure housing. Despite all of this\, social and private rents are growing faster than the cost of living. Social housing stock is dwindling\, yet there are around five times more empty homes in the country than households in need of housing. \n\n\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. We are united in struggle with friends and colleagues within and beyond the NHS in organising to end housing-related health inequalities. SUMMARY:*POSTPONED* Securitisation of Health group meeting
DESCRIPTION:This meeting has been postponed. All registrants have been notified\, and will receive a rescheduled date shortly. \n\n\n\nWhat is the securitisation of health?\n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org

SUMMARY:Spokesperson training: Housing & Health
DESCRIPTION:Interested in becoming a Medact spokesperson on economic justice or climate issues?\n\n\n\nGiving comments and broadcast interviews to the media can seem daunting\, but health workers speaking out can be a powerful way to get our messages across to huge sections of the public. \n\n\n\nWe are building a network of Medact members who have the skills and confidence to speak to the media about the ‘cost of living crisis’ and the housing crisis\, and how these issues are inseparable from climate\, economic and health justice! Confidence is key\, and this training will help you to feel prepared and ready to speak out with impact. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an in-person one-day training at the Medact offices in London. This training will be led by our Communications Lead\, TJ\, who will be joined by our campaign lead for Economic Justice. \n\n\n\nThe training will go through the fundamentals of speaking to the press and preparing for interviews to make sure you nail your messaging. SUMMARY:Housing and Health London Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Medact’s EJ Housing & Health Group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters. \n\n\n\nOver the past few months\, our members  have been actively involved in national advocacy work through the Homes for us Campaign\, local organising work in Birmingham and have recently started a new project organising with tenants and community organisers in Harrow.  \n\n\n\nYou will be hearing from the members involved in our Housing and Health campaign\, get updates on our local organising work in Harrow and help us develop our next steps and identify other potential campaigns in London. SUMMARY:Housing & health advocacy workshop with London Renters Union
DESCRIPTION:Health and wellbeing are shaped by the social\, economic and physical conditions we are born into\, and those in which we grow\, live\, work and age. Amongst these conditions\, housing may be one of the most powerful tools to improve population health. \n\n\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. The housing system in the UK is broken and is making us and our patients sick. \n\n\n\nHealth workers see and treat the symptoms of poor\, unstable housing\, and can play a crucial part in advocating for secure housing.  \n\n\n\nWe support a growing network of health workers\, public health professionals and allied civil society to build the power needed to advocate and campaign for Secure\, Quality and Affordable Housing in order to address widening health inequalities.  \n\n\n\nIn this joint workshop with the London Renters Union we will: \n\n\n\n\nThink about the intersection between housing and health and what the impact that the current housing crisis is having on the communities we support\n\n\n\nUnderstand how the current housing crisis was politically produced and how we can change it\n\n\n\nThink about the role of health workers as advocates\, organisers and campaigners that have a crucial role challenging a housing system that produces illness\n\n\n\nEngage in group exercises to learn how to advocate and campaign on behalf of the communities we support\n\n\n\nMeet other like minded health workers!\n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nAgenda:\n\n\n\n10:30am: Arrivals\, Welcome and Coffee/Tea \n\n\n\n11am-12:45pm (with 15 min comfort break):  \n\n\n\n\nFighting for Healthy Homes: Understanding the Housing Crisis\n\n\n\nThe role of health workers in challenging housing related illness\n\n\n\n\n1pm-2pm: Lunch Break \n\n\n\n2-3:30pm: Group Exercise: Campaigning & Advocating for Healthy Homes \n\n\n\n4pm onwards: Social (Location tbc)

SUMMARY:Don’t Bank on the Bomb Scotland Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Don’t Bank on the Bomb Scotland is a network of organisations campaigning for Scottish financial institutions and public bodies to divest from the companies that are involved in the production and development of nuclear weapons. The network is organising a Day of Action on Friday June 30th. \n\n\n\nThis Day of Action will be focussed on keeping up the pressure on the Royal Bank of Scotland to end its support for companies involved in the production and development of nuclear weapons. \n\n\n\nIt was reported that in January 2021\, the NatWest group—which is RBS is a part—had 2.3 billion pounds in outstanding loans or underwriting activities in seven companies heavily involved in the nuclear weapons industry. \n\n\n\nYou can organise a stall or protest outside your local branch\, or come down to planned stalls in Glasgow (Royal Bank of Scotland\, Gordon Street) or Edinburgh (Royal Bank of Scotland\, Nicholson Square). Both are running from 12noon to 1pm. Anyone is welcome to come along\, even for a short time\, to hold a placard or help put out hand leaflets! \n\n\n\nIf you’d like more information\, support in setting up a stall or to receive leaflets\, email Arthur West of DBoTBS.
