SUMMARY:Unlearning Medical Education
DESCRIPTION:This member-run workshop brings health workers together for a practical discussion about how – and why – we can start to ‘unlearn’ oppressive systems underpinning our own medical educations. We’ll consider who’s harmed and uplifted by medical pedagogy\, how our education shows up in our practices today\, and start working collectively towards alternative ways of learning towards health justice. This session will feature group discussions and a critical conversation between Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan and Dr Jo Hartland about their personal\, intellectual\, and professional experiences of medical learning. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is hosted by Medact’s Political Education Working Group. Spaces are limited to encourage group discussion – reserve your spot ASAP! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Jo Hartland (they/them) is an Associate Professor of Health Justice Education and School Deputy Education Director at Bristol Medical School. Drawing on their previous work as Doctor in the NHS\, their teaching on health justice within medicine is co-produced in partnership with marginalised communities\, bringing the voices of those historically excluded from healthcare into curriculum development. Nationally they are the Co-Chair for the Executive Board of the Medical Schools Council (MSC) Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Alliance. They are also an award-winning queer health activist\, and in their own time led the development of the GLADD UK Medical Schools Charter on So-Called LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy which led to their attendance at parliament briefing MPs on these issues. In recognition of their work they were awarded a 2024 National Teaching Fellowship Award and the 2023 Attitude Pride Award. Their research\, writing and public speaking explores themes of justice and power in medical education. They hope to use their experience and platform as a disabled and queer educator to role model authentic and meaningful work in healthcare education leadership\, inspiring students and colleagues to join in with marginalised communities fighting for social justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Rageshri Dhairyawan (she/her) is a doctor\, researcher and writer. She qualified in 2004 and is an NHS Consultant in HIV Medicine at Barts Health NHS Trust and Deputy Director of the SHARE Collaborative for Health Equity\, Queen Mary University of London. Her clinical work\, research and advocacy focus on improving health equity. Rageshri has held numerous national charity and policy positions and regularly works with patient organisations. She currently chairs the British HIV Association EEDI Group and steering group of 4M Mentor Mothers CIC. Rageshri is the author of Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing (Trapeze\, 2024) longlisted for the Bread and Roses Prize for Radical Non-Fiction. She is an inaugural Wellcome Collection x Spread the Word non-fiction writer awardee (2022).

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening of reflecting on our responses to climate change and climate action. \n\n\n\nWe are the Bristol branch of Medact\, a nation-wide collective where health workers campaign on health and climate justice. \n\n\n\n\nSign up on EventBrite\n\n\n\n\nDr Liz Marks will be holding a presentation and discussion on her research on climate anxiety and eco-distress. \n\n\n\nLiz is a clinical psychologist\, clinical director and a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Bath. She is author of over 30 articles\, currently focusing on people’s emotional responses to climate change. She co-lead the seminal 2021 global survey on young people’s feelings about climate change and governmental inaction. Released in 2022\, The Oil Machine highlights the complexities of how oil is embedded in our society – from high finance to cheap consumer goods—and brings together a wide range of voices from oil company executives\, economists\, young activists\, workers\, scientists\, and pension fund managers. It considers how this machine can be tamed\, dismantled\, or repurposed. DESCRIPTION:Global temperatures\, rising. Energy bills\, rising. Billionaire profits\, rising. Health injustice\, rising. \nLast year\, you and the health community came together in your 100s across the UK for the global day of action during COP 26 in Glasgow. Since then\, energy companies are making record-breaking profits while people are being forced to choose between heating and eating.\n\nGovernment policies\, both nationally and globally\, are causing devastation to people’s health. Working people and people of colour—who have contributed the least to the problem—are paying the price with killer famines\, floods\, crop failures\, fires and rising poverty. \n\nThis November\, when world leaders meet in Egypt for COP27\, African movements have called for a Global Day of Action for climate justice. \n\nThe UK Government must stop its climate wrecking plans\, and implement real climate solutions that solve both the climate and cost of living crises. To stop this crisis we need action that cuts carbon\, tackles inequality and ends the injustices baked into our world. Communities in the global south need urgent climate finance and reparations for the loss and damages that have caused mass destruction of lives and livelihoods. \n\nJustice won’t be handed to us by world leaders or delivered by corporations. We need to organise in our communities to ensure that not only is no one is cold or hungry this winter\, but that we stop the headlong rush into climate catastrophe.\n\nSign up to join your local health bloc on the day!
