SUMMARY:Making the Case for Social Homes: Messaging workshop with NEON
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online messaging workshop in collaboration with NEON! Learn how to communicate the public health case for social homes to a wider audience\, for use in broadcast media and campaigning. \n\n\n\nHomes should be a place of comfort\, health and security. Instead\, across the UK\, homes have become sites of illness. They are rendered cold and damp by poor insulation and sky-high energy prices. They are insecure due to unaffordable rents\, evictions\, and poor-quality housing. \n\n\n\nWe need to rethink housing beyond commodification and take action to reclaim housing for our health and as a public health asset. \n\n\n\nWith a new government in place\, new opportunities will emerge to cut through the political and media narrative on homes and communicate our vision of the public health case for social homes. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for health workers and campaigners who want to use health framing in their campaigns. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a workshop on how campaigners can effectively advocate for social homes! \n\n\n\nWe will cover: \n\n\n\n\nMessaging guidance on how to use health framing to draw the links between the housing system and our physical and mental health \n\n\n\nHow to use case studies from your experience as health workers\n\n\n\nSolutions that lead to a better health and housing for everyone\n\n\n\n\nGet the messaging guide here!

SUMMARY:Housing & health advocacy workshop with London Renters Union
DESCRIPTION:Health and wellbeing are shaped by the social\, economic and physical conditions we are born into\, and those in which we grow\, live\, work and age. Amongst these conditions\, housing may be one of the most powerful tools to improve population health. \n\n\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. The housing system in the UK is broken and is making us and our patients sick. \n\n\n\nHealth workers see and treat the symptoms of poor\, unstable housing\, and can play a crucial part in advocating for secure housing.  \n\n\n\nWe support a growing network of health workers\, public health professionals and allied civil society to build the power needed to advocate and campaign for Secure\, Quality and Affordable Housing in order to address widening health inequalities.  \n\n\n\nIn this joint workshop with the London Renters Union we will: \n\n\n\n\nThink about the intersection between housing and health and what the impact that the current housing crisis is having on the communities we support\n\n\n\nUnderstand how the current housing crisis was politically produced and how we can change it\n\n\n\nThink about the role of health workers as advocates\, organisers and campaigners that have a crucial role challenging a housing system that produces illness\n\n\n\nEngage in group exercises to learn how to advocate and campaign on behalf of the communities we support\n\n\n\nMeet other like minded health workers!\n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nAgenda:\n\n\n\n10:30am: Arrivals\, Welcome and Coffee/Tea \n\n\n\n11am-12:45pm (with 15 min comfort break):  \n\n\n\n\nFighting for Healthy Homes: Understanding the Housing Crisis\n\n\n\nThe role of health workers in challenging housing related illness\n\n\n\n\n1pm-2pm: Lunch Break \n\n\n\n2-3:30pm: Group Exercise: Campaigning & Advocating for Healthy Homes \n\n\n\n4pm onwards: Social (Location tbc)

SUMMARY:Organising for Power: The Core Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to build your skills to support your campaigning for health justice? \n\n\n\nMedact will be joining the Organising for Power (O4P) Training Sessions to learn\, practice and reflect together on core skills to bring into our campaigning for health justice. \n\n\n\nOrganising for Power: The Core Fundamentals is organised by lead trainer Jane McAlevey and hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. \n\n\n\nJane McAlevey has spent years organising in health settings across the UK and Europe – this training exists to support groups to develop core skills to strengthen their campaigns. We will be joining these sessions as Medact to collectively explore approaches to organising in the workplace and communities\, how to bring people in and build power for health justice. We will practice the core skills and reflect on how we can bring these practices into our campaigns. \n\n\n\nYou can sign up below to participate with Medact for the O4P training — please register your interest by Friday 22nd April. \n\n\n\nLogistics\n\n\n\nThe 6-week course is due to take place every Tuesday from 5 – 7pm BST between the 10th May and 14th June. \n\n\n\nWe will hold an additional session at the end of the course to reflect as Medact on the training. \n\n\n\nWe appreciate that starting at 5pm may be difficult for people to join and we would like to support as many people as possible to access and engage in the training — so are considering running an alternative later timeslot of 7 – 9pm on Wednesday. Please indicate which timings would work for you on the registration form. \n\n\n\nFor the training\, it is important as far as possible to have a consistent group of people\, so please only register if you would be able to make the majority of sessions. \n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\nTo see more details and the background to the programme\, please see this Organising for Power Explainer. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions at all about joining the training with Medact\, please get in touch with Medact’s Organiser\, Ben Eder\, at beneder@medact.org. \n\n\n\nRegistration has now closed!

SUMMARY:Alternative Training on Prevent in Healthcare #4
DESCRIPTION:Alternative Training on Prevent in Healthcare #4 – Nov 24 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch this video on YouTube\n\n\nIt is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships with all of our patients is essential to this work. \nHowever\, Prevent–with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation”–compromises all of this\, and is a source of harm and increased marginalisation. \nWhy is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about Prevent in safeguarding training? \nJoin the fourth in our series of online Alternative Trainings on Prevent to learn more.\nThis training will seek to shed light on some unanswered questions about Prevent. We will hear from: \n\nLatifa Akay—writer\, producer and Head of Collective Care at Act Build Change. Prior to this\, Latifa worked as Director of Education at Maslaha. She is a trustee at the Inclusive Mosque Initiative\,\nAmeen—a GP in east London\, and a member of Medact’s Securitisation of Health group\,\nMashal Iftikhar—a member of Medact’s Securitisation of Health Group and an NHS doctor training in psychiatry. She is passionate about health equity in mental illness and the intersection of criminal justice with mental health services.\n& more to be announced!\n\nThis event is particularly aimed at people who work or are training in\, study\, or who have worked in health. \nWe are aware that some people may feel some concern or worry about attending the event. As such\, we will be sending an email out to attendees prior to the event detailing how we will be seeking to make this event as safe and secure as possible. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:PnP New Joiners Meeting: November 2021
DESCRIPTION:For anyone who is new to Patients Not Passports\, we’re holding our next New Joiners meeting on November 23rd at 7PM on Zoom. We’ll recap October’s National Week of Action\, talk about future strategies\, hear from some of the groups working on the Patients Not Passports campaign and explore the different ways you can get involved. \nThis meeting is the best way to get up to speed with the campaign and get connected with work going on across the country! \nRegister Here! \nMost of the Patients Not Passports work happens through locally focused campaign groups\, with groups based in: Sheffield\, Liverpool\, Manchester\, Bristol\, Brighton\, Birmingham\, Oxford; East\, South\, and South East London; Glasgow\, and Wales. \nIf you’re not in any of these places\, don’t worry! Docs Not Cops and Medact’s Migrant Solidarity Group work nationally\, or we can support you to set up your own local group. You don’t need to work in healthcare to be involved! To win we’ll need everyone working together to oppose NHS charging and there is room for everyone in the campaign. \nIf you can’t make the New Joiners meeting\, don’t worry—there’ll be another one in a few months or we can make time for a quick phone call with you or connect you directly with your local group. \nIf you have time\, you could check out How NHS staff are fighting back against the ‘hostile environment’ for an overview of the campaign\, or read Challenging Healthcare Charging in the NHS\, a briefing that examines where the Hostile Environment policies came from\, how they work\, what their impact is\, and what we can do about them.

SUMMARY:Speaking out at COP 26 ─ climate media training for health workers
DESCRIPTION:As world leaders meet to discuss our future at the COP 26 climate talks\, health workers from across the UK will take action to demand the transformative changes we need to win both health justice and climate justice. Ahead of the conference\, Health for a Green New Deal is running a day-long\, specialised spokesperson training for health workers who are keen to speak out to the media. \n\n\n\nGiving comments and broadcast interviews to the media can seem daunting\, but health workers speaking out can be a powerful way to get our messages across to huge sections of the public. Confidence is key\, and this training will help you to feel prepared and ready to speak out with impact – at COP 26 and beyond! \n\n\n\nThe training\, led by Dr Rita Issa\, will go through the fundamentals of speaking to the press\, preparing for interviews to make sure you nail your messaging\, and we will run practice interviews with feedback from your peers. \n\n\n\nThere are 12 places on this training\, and we will prioritise places for people from the health community who are marginalised\, from communities who are under-represented in the media. If you are interested in attending\, please apply by telling us a bit about yourself in the form. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, get in touch with us on info@health4gnd.uk \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nAbout the lead trainer\n\n\n\nDr Rita Issa is a GP\, academic and activist. She’s appeared on the BBC\, ITV\, Sky News\, Al Jazeera and Novara Media\, among others\, and has trained through a number of media and communications groups\, including as part of the NEON spokesperson network. She’s led on a number of social media campaigns\, making millions of impressions across platforms like Twitter and Tumbler\, and is a columnist for the Independent\, most recently writing a series from her time aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise. www.drritaissa.com | @DrRitaIssa

SUMMARY:Patients Not Passports — New Joiners meeting September 2021
DESCRIPTION:The best way to get up to speed with the campaign and get connected with work going on across the country is to come to our next New Joiners meeting on Thursday 9th September. We’ll cover campaign strategy\, hear from some of the groups working on the Patients Not Passports campaign\, and explore the different ways you can get involved. We’re currently building towards a national day of action in October\, so there’s lots to do! \n? Register for the next New Joiners meeting – Thurs 9th September ? \nMost of the Patients Not Passports work happens through locally focused campaign groups\, with groups based in: Sheffield\, Liverpool\, Manchester\, Bristol\, Brighton\, Birmingham\, Oxford; East\, South\, and South East London; Glasgow\, and Wales. If you’re not in any of these places\, don’t worry! Docs Not Cops and Medact’s Migrant Solidarity Group work nationally or we can support you to set up your own local group. You don’t need to work in healthcare to be involved! To win we’ll need everyone working together to oppose NHS charging and there is room for everyone in the campaign. \nIf you can’t make the next New Joiners meeting\, don’t worry – there’ll be another one in a few months or we can make time for a quick phone call with you or connect you directly with your local group. If you have time\, you could check out How NHS staff are fighting back against the ‘hostile environment’ for an overview of the campaign\, or read Challenging Healthcare Charging in the NHS\, a briefing that examines where the Hostile Environment policies came from\, how they work\, what their impact is\, and what we can do about them. \n? Register for the next New Joiners meeting – Thurs 9th September ?
