SUMMARY:Autumn Concert for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Concert For Peace presented by the MPD Chamber Ensemble \n\n\n\nThe Autumn Concert for Peace’s programme is full of joy and optimism. In its blending of expressive melodies with masterly control in combining the three instruments\, Schubert’s youthful String Trio recalls Mozart’s masterpiece\, the Divertimento K 563. Three duos for clarinet and bassoon have been attributed to Beethoven\, but their origin is not completely clear. Whoever the composer\, they abound in good humour and witty interplay between the instruments; No. 2 is typical\, and contains a particularly touching slow movement. Nielsen’s music is often quirky and original; the Serenata in vano portrays a group of musicians who attempt to serenade a lady\, but when that fails\, they go home playing a jaunty tune. \n\n\n\nBeethoven’s Septet achieved immediate success – something he later resented\, when the public failed to appreciate some of his more serious and profound works. It is genial and uncomplicated\, and provides opportunities for each player to shine. The final movement ends with a breathless flurry of triplets for the violin. \n\n\n\nInterval speaker: Dr. Swee Chai Ang Co-Founder\, Medical Aid for Palestinians \n\n\n\nProgrammeSchubert String Trio in B-flat\, D 471Beethoven Duo in F for clarinet and bassoonNielsen Serenata in vanoBeethoven Septet in E-flat major\, Op. 20 \n\n\n\nStandard £20 Concession (Over 65s\, Students\, Unwaged) £15All proceeds donated to organisations in the peace movement.

SUMMARY:Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World
DESCRIPTION:An evening celebrating the memory of Dr Martin Hartog  \n\n\n\nJoin Medact at St. Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace for an evening lecture from Dr Carlos Umaña. We welcome Medact members\, health workers\, students and particularly young campaigners as we reflect on campaigning for a nuclear weapons free world. \n\n\n\nThere is an increasing urgency to strengthen our campaigning movement\, and build closer connections and coalition with movements dedicated to climate justice\, anti-militarism and anti-imperialism. \n\n\n\nFollowing the lecture\, we’ll hear a discussion between Carlos and UK-based campaigners for disarmament\, chaired by Marion Birch\, on the challenges and opportunities for growing the movement for nuclear disarmament in our current political context. The evening will close with a drinks reception for attendees.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Carlos Umaña is a general practitioner\, former local health director\, and epidemiological surveillance officer with the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. Serving until recently as IPPNW co-president\, he is also on the ICAN International Steering Group. He is the current president of IPPNW Costa Rica\, founder of Artists for Peace (2014) in Costa Rica\, and president of the activist group “Peace and Diversity”. He is also the recipient of the 2018 “Alan Turing LGBTIQ Visibility Award” for Social Organization. \n\n\n\nSince 2013\, he has worked by campaigning and lobbying for awareness on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons (HINW) and support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). He has worked closely with governments as part of the Costa Rican delegation in the 2014 NPT PrepCom and the 2015 NPT Review Conference\, and has worked with the network of regional peace organisations to organise conferences and roundtables on the HINW and the TPNW.Cordelia Vesely campaigns locally\, nationally and internationally for a range of health\, gender and environmental justice issues\, including disarmament\, demilitarisation and international humanitarian law. She has just finished her term as co-director of Students for Global Health UK\, where she built student capacity in advocacy and policy making. Her work has taken her to the UN and been recognised by organisations like the IPPNW for whom she has led European sessions on human rights and peace.Jake Atkinson is a campaigner on issues related to inequality and human rights. As Senior Adviser at STOPAIDS\, he co-convened UK and global civil society alliances campaigning to improve equitable access to medicines\, protect human rights\, and improve funding to tackle infectious diseases. He was also part of the first Steering Committee of Youth for TPNW\, the global movement of young people in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons from 2021 to 2024. He currently works for Tax Justice UK with a focus on taxing the super rich and big polluters\, and on securing a bold United Nations Tax Convention.  \n\n\n\nMarion Birch has worked on public health and healthcare programmes in countries affected by armed conflict and disasters for 20 years\, principally in Sudan\, Mozambique\, Angola and Sri Lanka. In the UK she has worked as a training manager\, health advisor and consultant\, and for eight years was director of the global health charity Medact. Presently Marion teaches and examines part time at University College London (Institute for Global Health and the Global Business School for Health)\, at City St George’s (University of London)\, and at the Society of Apothecaries. She is editor of the Routledge / Taylor & Francis journal Medicine\, Conflict and Survival which is affiliated with IPPNW and their UK affiliate Medact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn memory of Martin Hartog (1931-2023) \n\n\n\nThis event is made possible thanks to the generous donation of a founding member of Medact\, the late Dr Martin Hartog (1931–2023). Martin was the first chair of Medact and an active member of the Nuclear Weapons Group until his death in July 2023. \n\n\n\nThe horror of any use of nuclear weapons was close to Martin’s heart for many years. He was deeply involved with the Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (MCANW) until it merged with the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW) to form Medact in 1992. Martin served as the Chair of Medact in those early years\, and was an active member particularly with our Nuclear Weapons Group for the rest of his life. \n\n\n\nMartin felt passionately about the need to introduce and involve younger generations of campaigners in the movement for nuclear disarmament. His legacy donation to the group contributed to enabling recruitment of a project coordinator for the Don’t Bank on the Bomb! UK campaign\, and additionally supporting this public lecture. Medact is the UK affiliate of International Physicians for the  Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW)

SUMMARY:Homes for Health: The Public Health Case for Social Homes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second of our series of online gatherings to discuss together how health workers can join the fight for housing and health justice! \n\n\n\nThe so-called housing crisis makes the spaces in which we live damp\, mouldy\, insecure and impossible to afford. The housing system prevents vast numbers of families from simply feeling at home\, and calling the place they live a place of safety. Austerity and the commodification of housing has turned the domestic into a site of illness\, violence\, precarity\, insecurity\, and in some cases death.  \n\n\n\nWe need urgent political action to respond to the public health crisis that health workers are witnessing. This requires rethinking housing beyond commodification and taking action to reclaim it as a public health asset. We need to reclaim housing for health. \n\n\n\nIt will take a movement\, with tenants\, health workers and all sectors of society working together to shift the narrative and end the public health crisis in housing. Join us to get involved with the fight for healthy homes! \n\n\n\nIn this second online gathering\, we will hear from speakers about how health workers are joining the fight for housing justice and how tenants and communities across the country are building power to force change. \n\n\n\n\nMedact members Dr Abi Secker\, Dr Amaran Uthayakumar-Cumarasamy and Dr Isobel Braithwaite\n\n\n\nAdam Gabsi – chair of Inclusion London and Harrow Association of Disabled people. Adam is passionate about Disabled people receiving the justice they deserve and wants to use his position to the benefit of all Disabled people\, London-wide and beyond.\n\n\n\nLaura Vicinanza – leads Inclusion London’s strategic engagement with the Greater London Authority (GLA) and supports DDPOs with influencing local and national government policies.\n\n\n\nGreater Manchester Tenants Union – a democratic\, member-led union\, working across the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester. They organise and represent members in the private and social rented sector and fight for safe\, secure and affordable housing for everyone\n\n\n\nDr Abi O’Connor (New Economics Foundation) – an urban sociologist whose expertise centres on understanding the relationship between urban governance\, local politics and the (re)structuring of place\, specifically focusing on the impact of this on communities and areas impacted by regional inequality. She has a keen interest in democratising knowledge through grassroots movements.\n\n\n\n\nBased on London? Join us for an in-person watch party at the Medact office in Pelican House\, Bethnal Green! Just let us know you’re joining in person in the form below! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHomes should be a place of comfort\, health and security. Instead\, across the UK\, homes have become sites of illness. They are rendered cold and damp by poor insulation and sky-high energy prices. They are insecure due to unaffordable rents\, evictions\, and poor-quality housing. \n\n\n\nCold\, unaffordable and insecure homes are no accident. They are the symptoms of a political system that produces mass illness and deepens inequalities in both health and wealth.  The root causes are political—and this means the solutions are too. \n\n\n\nAt these online gatherings\, together we will gain the tools we need to take action as health workers. Join the fight to win healthy homes for all\, as part of the wider struggles for climate\, housing and economic justice.  \n\n\n\nIn the run up to the general election & beyond we intend to get organised\, fight for healthy homes\, and win.

SUMMARY:From Fuel Poverty to the Just Transition: How Health Workers Can Join the Fight to Win
DESCRIPTION:Our homes are making us sick\, shortening lives and stealing children’s futures. Join us this July for two online gatherings\, where we will learn about how and why our homes have become sites of illness\, and the political solutions towards reclaiming the relationship between homes and health. \n\n\n\nMillions of people in the UK live in homes that are cold\, damp\, and mouldy. We can’t afford our energy bills\, our houses are poorly insulated\, and our government continues to rely on dirty\, expensive fossil fuels. While people get sick\, energy and fossil fuel companies are raking in record profits.  \n\n\n\nCold and damp homes cost thousands of lives every year. This is the direct result of political choices—putting profit for shareholders and landlords above everyone’s right to live in a safe\, warm home.  \n\n\n\nWe know the solutions. As our Public Health Case for a Green New Deal stated loud and clear: we need quality homes for all\, fair access to energy\, and a rapid just transition to cheap\, renewable energy.  \n\n\n\nAt this online gathering\, we’ll hear from speakers on how fossil fuels are powering the crisis of cold and damp homes\, how mass insulation of homes and reform of our energy system is central to a just transition\, and how organising in solidarity with tenants and communities builds power to force change.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll share the tools that you need to learn\, pressure decision makers\, and build the health voice alongside communities—fighting to win healthy homes for all.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers at the event will include: \n\n\n\n\nSimon from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition & Warm This Winter campaign—EFPC is a broad group of anti-poverty\, environmental\, health and housing charities\, trade unions and campaigners\n\n\n\nStuart Bretherton from Fuel Poverty Action—which campaigns to protect people from fuel poverty. We challenge rip-off energy companies and unfair policies that leave people to endure cold homes. We take action for warm\, well-insulated homes and clean and affordable energy\, under the control of people and communities\, not private companies\n\n\n\nRepresentative from Living Rent—based in Scotland\, Living Rent is a mass-membership organisation of low-middle income renters\, working and fighting together to win concrete improvements to our daily lives and put political and economic power back where it belongs\n\n\n\nScott McAulay from Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) and Anthropocene Architecture School\n\n\n\nDr Isobel Braithwaite\, Medact member Public Health Doctor—currently doing research on Housing and Health\, Isobel has worked as a medical doctor and on public health issues including climate change and extreme weather\, air pollution and mental health\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHomes should be a place of comfort\, health and security. Instead\, across the UK\, homes have become sites of illness. They are rendered cold and damp by poor insulation and sky-high energy prices. SUMMARY:Neoliberalism\, Security and the Politics of Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The fields of mental health hold the potential to depoliticise experiences that are deeply connected to our social\, political and economic environments. By focusing on individual conditions\, we risk disregarding those root causes\, such as poverty\, racism and oppression. \n\n\n\nMental health disciplines are not apolitical fields\, and may fail to interrogate the boundaries and limitations of medicine\, psychiatry and psychology. Spaces that should centre care and patient autonomy can double as places of producing “loyal\, low-risk and productive citizens” (The Muslim\, State and Mind). This depoliticisation of mental health disciplines is particularly relevant for racialised minorities\, like Muslims. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to host a panel discussion with clinical psychologist\, academic and author Tarek Younis (The Muslim\, State and Mind: Psychology in Times of Islamophobia\, 2022)\, Securitisation of Health group member and trainee psychiatrist Mashal Iftikhar\, and Medact’s Research Manager Hil Aked whose current project Criminalising Distress explores the harmful impact of policing in mental health care. \n\n\n\nUsing case studies and experiences\, our panel will explore the alleged “apolitical” position of psychiatry and psychology; how psychological theories and practices can work to serve State interests and perpetuate racism and inequality; how austerity and the political economy can cause and exacerbate a population’s poor mental health; and whether the solutions to our mental health crisis can even be found in mental health spaces. They will touch on the increasing securitisation of supposed spaces of care\, and the harmful impacts to public health of pressure on providers to report and surveille their patients. \n\n\n\nWe hope to create a space of collective exploration and expansion of our understanding of individualised “mental illness” and treatments and cures beyond the boundaries of clinical pathology. We would encourage anyone interested in the research\, policy or practice of mental health\, the securitisation of health\, as well as anyone with lived experience of mental illness to attend. Following the panel discussion there will be time for audience questions. \n\n\n\nWe’re at capacity for in-person attendance. \n\n\n\nFor those who have been confirmed as attending in-person\, the venue has been changed to the Human Rights Action Centre\, 25 New Inn Yard\, London EC2A 3EA (map) just 5 minutes from Medact. \n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:'The Suspect' Author Talk: Mental Health\, Counterterrorism\, and the Surveillance State
DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED: from 21st June to 5th July ***\nDue to industrial action on the transport network\, we have moved the date of this event to Tuesday 5th July. Solidarity with the striking rail workers! \nWhat impact has two decades’ worth of policing and counterterrorism had on the state of mind of Muslims in Britain? The Suspect draws on the author’s experiences to take the reader on a journey through British counterterrorism practices and the policing of Muslims. \nJoin Rizwaan Sabir and Tarek Younis for discussion on the traumatising effects of Sabir’s surveillance\, arrest and detention for suspected terrorism. \nWriting publicly for the first time about the impacts of these experiences\, Sabir argues that these harmful outcomes are not the result of errors in government planning\, but the consequences of using a counterinsurgency warfare approach to fight terrorism and police Muslims. \nTo resist the injustice of these policies and practices\, we need to centre our lived experiences and build networks of solidarity and support. \nPlease register to receive a 20% discount code for The Suspect when purchasing via Pluto Press. \nThis is an in-person event with an option to livestream via Zoom. The venue is Brady Arts & Community Centre\, 192-196 Hanbury St\, London E1 5HU (map). \n[Registration has now closed] \n— \nDr Rizwaan Sabir is a Lecturer in Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and author of The Suspect: Counterterrorism\, Islam\, and the Security State. \nDr Tarek Younis is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Middlesex University. He researches and writes on Islamophobia\, racism in mental health\, and the securitisation of clinical settings. He teaches on the impact of culture\, religion\, globalization and security policies on mental health.

SUMMARY:Briefing launch: The Public Health Case Against the Policing Bill
DESCRIPTION:The public health case against the policing bill – Briefing launch event\, 15 November 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch this video on YouTube\n\n\nThe government has misleadingly branded the racist and dangerous PCSC (Policing) Bill a “public health approach” to combating serious violence. But health workers in the Medact Research Network debunk these claims in our new briefing The Public Health Case Against the Policing Bill. \nWritten to support the huge groundswell of opposition to this bill in the #KillTheBill movement\, the briefing explains why the measures in the Bill – greater police powers\, repression of protest\, harsher prison sentences\, erosion of confidentiality and increased criminalisation of Gypsy and Traveller communities – will actually harm public health  and entrench discrimination. \nWe aim to articulate and amplify radical public health voices against the Policing Bill’s approach and explore potential alternatives. \nYou’ll hear from health workers who are members of our Research Network and involved in creation of the briefing\, and we’re thrilled to host four fantastic speakers who will discuss public health in the context of crime\, policing and prison: \nLola Olufemi – Lola is a black feminist writer and researcher\, author of Feminism Interrupted: Disrupting Power and Experiments in Imagining Otherwise. Alongside writing\, she is a member of ‘bare minimum‘\, an interdisciplinary anti-work arts collective. Lola also facilitates reading groups/workshops\, occasionally curates\, and is volunteer co-ordinator at the Feminist Library in South London. \nKelsey M – Kelsey is a feminist\, abolitionist organiser based in London\, resisting state violence and working to explore and build transformative justice and community-led responses to violence. As a facilitator with grassroots collectives she delivers workshops exploring community accountability\, bystander intervention\, power\, and tools for campaigning and movement building. \nChelsea McDonagh – Chelsea is a researcher\, Irish Traveller activist and writer. She speaks on a wide range of issues affecting Gypsy and Traveller people including education\, health\, policy and politics. Chelsea is one of the co-founders of the Rom Belong programme\, a KCL Widening Participation programme for Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller pupils and is passionate about improving opportunities for young people. \nKavian Kulasabanathan – Kavian is a paediatric A&E doctor and researcher at the University of Oxford. His interests span socio-political determinants of health\, particularly pertaining to race and class\, alongside community-centered models of care. Kavian organises with PHM-UK and Race & Health collective. \nPresenters covered topics such as the future implications of the PCSC bill\, different visions of public health\, new approaches to care\, and approaches to ‘serious violence’ and socio-economic issues that don’t rely on punitive or carceral responses. There will be lots of time for audience questions!

SUMMARY:Why Health Justice Means Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:This November\, COP26 was due to take place in Glasgow. To mark this moment\, the COP26 Coalition is hosting From the Ground Up – a global gathering providing the space to educate\, strategise and co-ordinate\, to build power and connect within our global justice movements. This is an opportunity for Scottish\, UK\, European and international climate justice movements to build momentum and capacity\, and to connect to broader civil society to build power for system change. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to be organising an event at the global gathering on Monday 16th November\, 18:00 to 19:30 –  Why Health Justice Means Climate Justice.  \n\n\n\nRegister your place for Why Health Justice Means Climate Justice \n\n\n\nWhy Health Justice Means Climate Justice\n\n\n\nCovid-19 has brought into consciousness the deep pre-existing health inequalities. It has highlighted how our health is shaped by the wider social\, economic and environmental conditions in which we live. At the roots of health injustice is an extractive\, economic system that serves to concentrate power in the pursuit of profit through the exploitation of people and the planet. This is the same system that is driving climate breakdown. This panel discussion seeks to reflect on the connections between health and the climate\, the public health impacts of extractive industries and how the Green New Deal can also be a Public Health New Deal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will be hearing from voices across the world as to how we build the health movement for transformative climate justice. There will be space for questions and deeper reflection for how we organise from the ground up in the lead up to COP 26. Join us as we explore why health justice means climate justice.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nDr Rita Issa\, GP Trainee\, Climate & Health Activist (Chair)\n\n\n\nDr Alice Gardner\, GP & Medact Member\n\n\n\nAraceli Camargo\, science lead for Centric Lab\, who use neuroscience to focus on improving public health & health justice\n\n\n\nErika Arteaga-Cruz\, doctor & health campaigner with the People’s Health Movement Extractive Industries Circle\n\n\n\nSophie Gepp\, Medical Student and member of Health for Future\n\n\n\n\nRegister your place now \n\n\n\nIf you want to help us build the health movement for transformative climate justice\, you can join our Climate & Health Group.

SUMMARY:The International Struggle for Universal Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Join NEF and Patients not Passports to discuss what the UK can learn from these international and historical struggles for universal healthcare to organise and win.\nA new report by the New Economics Foundation and the Patients not Passports coalition shows that the struggle for universal healthcare is not unique to the NHS in the present moment. Similar restrictions on migrants’ access to healthcare have been advanced by Governments across Europe\, and have been tried before in the NHS’s past. But these policies have been met by strong resistance and opposition\, with coordinated campaigns successfully organising against them. \nWhat can we learn from other campaigns that have successfully fought for the principle of universal healthcare for all\, regardless of immigration status? How can we organise collectively to ensure that the NHS is accessible for everyone? How can we win the fight against racism\, discrimination and the scapegoating of migrants that excludes migrants and BME communities from public services? \nSpeakers TBA \nRegister for the Zoom call

SUMMARY:The arms industry in the era of COVID-19: lessons for the future
DESCRIPTION:Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic reached the UK\, it became clear that the NHS was not sufficiently equipped or staffed to respond to the crisis. \nIn March\, the government put out a call for industry to convert its production to manufacture crucial medical equipment\, such as ventilators and PPE for frontline workers. To date\, a number of arms and defence companies have responded to this call – alongside existing companies that manufacture medical equipment and others. \nWorkers at Lucas Aerospace called for exactly this kind of arms conversion back in 1976\, when they produced an Alternative Corporate Plan – now known as the Lucas Plan. \nIn this webinar we discuss what a ‘just transition’ from industries that cause destruction to those that support peace and public health could and should look like\, hearing from experts in the field of arms conversion and a just transition for workers: \n\nHilary Wainwright – Founding editor of Red Pepper Magazine and co-author of ‘The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?’  \nDr. Andy Haines – Professor of Environmental Change and Public Health at LSHTM\nPhil Asquith – Chartered Engineer and former Chairman of the Lucas Aerospace Combine\, Burnley site\nDr. Stuart Parkinson – Executive Director of Scientists for Global Responsibility\nSam Mason – Policy officer at PCS Union and member of the New Lucas Plan project\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe arms industry in the era of COVID-19: lessons for the future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch this video on YouTube

SUMMARY:‘Do No Harm’ - a meeting about war\, the arms trade and health
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this month\, over 276 health workers sent a letter to the UK government urging them to stop supporting the arms trade and arms fairs such as DSEI. \nWe invite you to join us in discussing the impacts of war and armed conflict on health\, and of health workers working at the front lines in conflict zones. \nWe hope to also discuss how the health community can join the campaign to hold the UK government to account for its role\, through for example facilitating the sale of arms to countries such as Saudi Arabia\, in public health crises abroad as a result of conflict. \nSpeakers include:\n– Rita Dayoub\, a Syrian dentist\, Academy Associate at Chatham House and founder of Health Workers at the Frontline\n– Dr. Sara Beleil\, Psychiatrist and Academic Secretary at the Sudan Doctors’ Union UK\n– Ann Feltham\, Parliamentary Coordinator at Campaign Against the Arms Trade \nOur building has step-free access\, but this is not permanent\, i.e. you need someone to help set up ramp at the front entrance or let you in via the back door through the bike shed. There are “standard” non-wide doorways through to the meeting rooms. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Cuba & International Health - with Dr Enmanuel Vigil Fonseca
DESCRIPTION:In 2009 — as soon as he qualified from medical school in Havana — Dr. Enmanuel Vigil Fonseca began volunteering on international missions. Beginning in Venezuela\, Dr. Fonseca joined primary care services aimed at providing medical coverage to vulnerable communities. He then headed to Sierra Leone as part of Cuba’s response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak\, which included a total of 12\,000 health workers volunteering their support. Dr. Fonseca’s following missions would take him to Western Sahara and Ecuador\, where Cuba’s medical brigades responded to flooding and an earthquake. \nDr. Fonseca will join us to discuss Cuba’s healthcare and medical internationalism\, providing insight into one of the world’s most remarkable approaches to national health provision and international health. Chairing the discussion is Professor Imti Choonara\, a retired paediatrician\, emeritus professor in Child Health at the University of Nottingham and Editor in Chief of BMJ Paediatrics Open. Dr. Choonara is also interested in international child health and organises an annual workshop on Child Health in Cuba. \nTo attend\, please register using the form below. We are very sorry that the venue for this event is not wheelchair accessible. We do intend to live-stream the event so that anyone that wants to can join online. \nWe are grateful to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign for their help with hosting this event. You can read more about Dr. Fonseca on the Cuba Solidarity Campaign website. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:PREVENT in the NHS - Medact Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Join Medact Manchester for the next evening talk in our Medact lecture series. We are looking forward to hearing from Dr Tarek Younis\, a cultural psychologist and Newton postdoctoral research fellow at UCL. He will be discussing his current project\, which concentrates on the political responses of healthcare professionals to Prevent. \nPrevent is part of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy\, and places a statutory duty on many professionals working in public services – including schools\, universities and the NHS – to report people whom they suspect of being at risk of “radicalisation”. \n7pm at  University Place 6.210\, Oxford Road. \nThere will be plenty of time for discussion after the talk\, so please join us. \nYou can find more information on Dr Younis here: https://www.tarekyounis.org/about.html \nYou can find more information on Prevent here: https://www.medact.org/2018/blogs/prevent-duty-in-the-nhs/ \n[Registration has now closed]
