SUMMARY:Medact Sheffield: NHS Borderlands screening & discussion
DESCRIPTION:Many of us grew up feeling proud of the NHS\, our universal and free healthcare service. Sadly\, the NHS has become part of the hostile environment imposed on migrants via the levying of exorbitant financial charges for certain patients accessing basic\, or life-saving care. The scapegoating of marginalised people for the systemic problems within our NHS is not something we should accept. \n\n\n\nThe national Patients not Passports (PNP) campaign has recently created a bank of online resources aimed at raising awareness of charging patients from outside the UK. This toolkit will equip those who work closely with migrants\, refugees and asylum seekers with the necessary information to resist NHS migrant charging policy and stop patients from being denied healthcare.  \n\n\n\nWe want to raise awareness of this new resource and share it within Sheffield and South Yorkshire. We also want to build on the vibrant group of people in Sheffield who raise awareness of this injustice\, help support those who are denied access to care because of their immigration status\, and pressure politicians to change this cruel system. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of the brilliant NHS Borderlands short film\, hear from Sheffield residents who have personal experience of the hostile environment in the NHS\, discuss actions we can take (such as accessing the PNP toolkit) and enjoy food together.  \n\n\n\nWe will be at the Broomhall Community Centre on Thursday the 12th of December at 7pm. Food will be provided around 8pm. Free entry\, anyone welcome! \n\n\n\nPlease register to help us estimate numbers! If you have any questions\, please get in touch: sheffield@medact.org

SUMMARY:London Housing & Health meeting (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Medact’s EJ Housing & Health Group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters. \n\n\n\nLast month\, Medact members joined tenants from across the country with the Healthy Homes Coalition at a lively protest outside the so-called Affordable Housing Awards in Old Trafford on Friday 17 November – a grotesque\, self-congratulatory awards ceremony for landlords whose neglect is putting tenants’ health at risk.  \n\n\n\nOver the past few weeks Medact members in the London Housing and Health Group have been supporting a group of tenants in east London that reported suffering from health problems as a result of their housing conditions. After a session facilitated by the local tenants association and Medact\, tenants decided to come together to campaign against their landlord to force them to carry out the necessary disrepairs. It has been a pleasure working with Fatima\, one of the tenants\, and Channel 4 to tell their story and how they are fighting back. \n\n\n\nMeet other Medact members and health workers interested in our Housing & Health work\, hear about our ongoing campaign and organising work and find out about how to get involved! \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be followed by a social in Dalston. Come join us! \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will be hearing from the members involved in our Housing and Health campaign\, get updates on our local organising work in Harrow\, news on our work with the Homes for Us coalition\, and help us develop our next steps and identify other potential campaigns in London.  \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to be a regular member of the EJ&H group or a health worker to get involved\, everyone is welcome! If you’re unable to attend any of the meetings but keen to get involved or develop a local campaign you can contact Jordi: jordilopezbotey@medact.org \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe housing system in the UK is broken. Currently\, 1.6 million households are on social housing waiting lists and millions more are struggling to meet unaffordable rents in the private sector.  One in five dwellings in England fail to meet decent standards for living\, with disregard for basic health and safety measures all too common. Housing is not equitably distributed in the UK: poorer households\, ethnic minority groups\, the elderly and adults with disabilities are all more likely to live in low-quality\, unsafe\, insecure housing. Despite all of this\, social and private rents are growing faster than the cost of living. Social housing stock is dwindling\, yet there are around five times more empty homes in the country than households in need of housing. \n\n\n\nAs part of the health community\, we see and care for the symptoms of an unjust economic system. We are united in struggle with friends and colleagues within and beyond the NHS in organising to end housing-related health inequalities. SUMMARY:Leeds: Migration is life! How do we resist borders in the everyday?
DESCRIPTION:Join local migrant justice organisations & community groups for an afternoon of practical workshops on resisting the Hostile Environment\, and a screening of ‘NHS Borderlands’. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re all Leeds aren’t we? \n\n\n\nWhoever we are and wherever we come from\, most strive to treat others how we want to be treated. While the people in power continue to show that they don’t care about us\, we must show that we do care about one another. \n\n\n\n\nSign up on Eventbrite!\n\n\n\n\nLocal Leeds migrant justice organisations and community groups have come together to bring this afternoon of practical workshops to learn about how we can resist violent borders that have been brought into our everyday lives through the government’s cruel Hostile Environment policies. \n\n\n\nPAFRAS\, Racial Justice Network\, Yorkshire Resists\, Stop the Scan\, Leeds Anti-Raids Action and Patients Not Passport will be sharing their expertise and practical tools for resistance as well as raising the voices of those who are subject to Hostile Environment policies. We will also be screening the award-winning Bare Life Film’s NHS Borderlands\, an investigative documentary exploring the human impact of NHS charges on migrants. The short film explores the story of Angela\, who fled persecution in Zimbabwe only to be subjected to Hostile Environment immigration policies in the UK and charged £8\,000 for vital medical care. \n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at both people who are subject to immigration control as well as those who wish to learn more about how they can stand in solidarity with migrant communities who are coming under increasing attacks from both people in power and the far-right. \n\n\n\nThis event is ticketed and you will only be allowed entry with a ticket. We ask those who can afford to donate to bring a suggested donation of £10 so we can run further events for the community. Sign up on Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Free Film Screening of NHS Borderlands\, Panel Discussion and Q+A
DESCRIPTION:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/free-film-screening-of-nhs-borderlands-panel-discussion-and-qa-tickets-650317064847 \n\n\n\nCome and learn about our national movement and about the local campaign at the Royal Free Hospital and find out how you can help to end the charging of vulnerable patients for NHS care. There will be a short introduction talk\, followed by a screening of the 25 minute documentary\, and then a Panel discussion and Q+A afterwards with some snacks and drinks available. \n\n\n\nRefugees\, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants and are being harmed by the hostile environment policy and hundreds of vulnerable patients are being charged for NHS care at the Royal Free Hospital every year. Some of these patients are destitute\, and others are reported to the Home Office which can jeopardise their asylum claim. The hostile environment policies lead to delays\, deterrence\, damage and tragic deaths for these patients. These policies worsen disparities in terms of health inequality and cause moral injury to healthcare workers. \n\n\n\nNot only are these policies unethical and denounced and opposed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges\, the British Medical Association\, the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology\, and the Royal College of General Practitioners but they are also they are also a big step away from achieving the World Health Organisations target for universal healthcare. Furthermore\, it has been proven in various studies that charging migrants for healthcare is not a cost effective way to save money\, as it often costs more money to track down patients than is ever recouped\, and leads to patients requiring emergency care in the long term which is more expensive and not recoverable. Good access to preventative medicine is much more cost effective and ethical. Healthcare workers refuse to act a border-guards. \n\n\n\nThe Royal Free hospital was set up\, in 1828 to “provide free care to those of little means” and when the NHS was set up by Aneurin Bevan over 100 years later\, the founding doctrine was that “illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay\, nor an offence for which they should be penalised\, but a misfortune the cost of which should be shared by the community.”

SUMMARY:Housing & Health: London meeting
DESCRIPTION:Medact’s Economic Justice Housing & Health Group is organising to improve policies for better access to secure and sustainable housing. This includes working alongside local groups to support local campaigns\, as well as demanding policy change on a national level for better support for social housing\, community-owned housing stock and protections for renters. \n\n\n\nOver the past few months\, our members have been actively involved in national advocacy work through the Homes For Us Campaign\, local organising work in Birmingham\, and a new project organising with tenants and community organisers in Harrow. \n\n\n\nAt this meeting\, you’ll hear from the members involved in our Housing and Health campaign\, get updates on our local organising work in Harrow\, help us develop next steps and identify other potential campaigns in London. \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to be a regular member of the Economic Justice & Health group or a health worker to get involved—everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nIf you’re unable to attend any of the meetings but keen to get involved or develop a local campaign you can contact Jordi: jordilopezbotey@medact.org \n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe housing system in the UK is broken. We are united in struggle with friends and colleagues within and beyond the NHS in organising to end housing-related health inequalities \n\n\n\nYou can read more in our booklet The Public Health Case for Secure Housing

SUMMARY:Medact Birmingham: Druids Heath Campaign Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Meet other Medact members and health workers interested in our Economic Justice work\, hear the latest updates on our Druids Heath campaign\, and find out about how to get involved. \nThe Economic Justice & Health group is currently working in Birmingham to support the Druids Heath Community Forum and their Build 1ST campaign – a community campaign organising against the demolition of council housing in Druids Heath. \n“Build 1ST Druids Heath” is a campaign to build first before eviction\, ensuring that residents get to move to a new house\, stay in the area and only move once: into a permanent\, quality home within their communities\, alongside a guaranteed right to return for those families who have already been moved. \nRecently\, health workers launched a petition to Birmingham City Council. We will discuss how else we can support the community in Druids Heath\, and how we can win the Build First demand. We’ll also explore the impact of housing on health more widely\, and the health community’s involvement in  organising around the housing crisis. \nThis is an in-person meeting at Cherry Reds Cafe (map) \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Medact Meet & Greet ahead of Lucas Plan screening at MAC Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:On March 1st\, screenings are being organised up and down the country for the launch of The Plan ─ a new feature length documentary following the inspiring story of a group of workers at Lucas Aerospace in the 1970s\, who\, facing redundancies and industrial decline\, came together to make a plan to keep jobs by using the company’s technology and their own skills to make things society needed\, instead of military equipment. \n \nTHE PLAN Trailer from Steve Sprung on Vimeo. \nAt Medact\, we are really excited about how campaigns such as the New Lucas plan and the Green New Deal are pushing for just transitions from arms and fossil fuel industries to more beneficial and sustainable industries ─ reshaping our economy to one that promotes health and well-being at the same time as equity and social justice. \nIn the run up to our #HealthJustice gathering in Birmingham on 27th-29th March\, we will be hosting a meet & greet alongside the screening of The Plan at MAC Birmingham. Come along and talk to Ben from the office about the role for health workers in advocating for a just industrial transition\, our new Medact Birmingham group\, our upcoming conference\, and how you can get involved. And if you can\, stay for the film! \nBen will be around in the MAC cafe before the film starts from 1 – 2pm\, and again during the interval 4 – 4.30pm. Feel free to drop by at any point for however long! \nLook out for someone with leaflets – or call/text me on 07708260962 if you can’t find me! \nLinks\nBook your ticket for the screening and Q&A at MAC Birmingham \nRead New Lucas Plan campaigner Sam Mason’s piece on defence diversification for the Medact blog \nOther launch screenings on Sunday 1st March around the UK\n\nCambridge Arts Picturehouse\nLiverpool Picturehouse at FACT\nLondon Bertha Dochouse\nNorwich Cinema City Picturehouse\nSheffield Showroom\n\nFor details of how to book see the cinema’s website or The Plan on Facebook
