DESCRIPTION:It is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships between patients and health workers is essential to this work. However\, the Prevent Duty – with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation” – compromises all of this.  \n\n\n\nAs we’ve outlined in our work\, Prevent is a source of harm and increased marginalisation\, particularly for Muslim and racialised communities\, as well as those with mental health conditions.  \n\n\n\nSo\, why is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about the harms of Prevent in safeguarding training? \n\n\n\nJoin us for this series of Alternative Training on Prevent to learn more\, and find out how you can add your voice to the movement to end the Prevent Duty. DESCRIPTION:In a world ablaze with escalating conflicts\, global instability\, and worsening humanitarian crises\, the threat of nuclear weapons to human life is mounting. And yet\, every year\, billions of pounds flow through UK banks\, pension funds\, and other financial institutions that invest in companies producing nuclear weapons\, making the threat of nuclear war even more real.  \n\n\n\nAt Don’t Bank on the Bomb UK\, we are building a nationwide movement to pressure banks and financial institutions to withdraw their support for the nuclear weapons industry\, by demanding they move their money away from companies that manufacture and trade in weapons of mass destruction. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re an experienced activist or just learning about the issue\, Don’t Bank on the Bomb UK is the perfect place to join others committed to building a safer\, nuclear-free world.  \n\n\n\nJoin our first network meeting on Tuesday 25th February 2025. We are excited to welcome guests who will be speaking about their work on nuclear disarmament\, and the incredible organising that has happened on nuclear divestment.

DESCRIPTION:What is the securitisation of health?\n\n\n\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, which at times require health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \n\n\n\nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \n\n\n\nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation here. \n\n\n\nAbout the group\n\n\n\nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. New members are welcome!  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns about attending\, please email our Campaign Lead Sarah Lasoye at sarahlasoye@medact.org. \n\n\n\nThis event will be held online on Zoom.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online messaging workshop in collaboration with NEON! Learn how to communicate the public health case for social homes to a wider audience\, for use in broadcast media and campaigning. \n\n\n\nHomes should be a place of comfort\, health and security. Instead\, across the UK\, homes have become sites of illness. They are rendered cold and damp by poor insulation and sky-high energy prices. They are insecure due to unaffordable rents\, evictions\, and poor-quality housing. \n\n\n\nWe need to rethink housing beyond commodification and take action to reclaim housing for our health and as a public health asset. \n\n\n\nWith a new government in place\, new opportunities will emerge to cut through the political and media narrative on homes and communicate our vision of the public health case for social homes. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for health workers and campaigners who want to use health framing in their campaigns. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a workshop on how campaigners can effectively advocate for social homes! \n\n\n\nWe will cover: \n\n\n\n\nMessaging guidance on how to use health framing to draw the links between the housing system and our physical and mental health \n\n\n\nHow to use case studies from your experience as health workers\n\n\n\nSolutions that lead to a better health and housing for everyone\n\n\n\n\nGet the messaging guide here!
