SUMMARY:Organising for Power: The Core Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to build your skills to support your campaigning for health justice? \n\n\n\nMedact will be joining the Organising for Power (O4P) Training Sessions to learn\, practice and reflect together on core skills to bring into our campaigning for health justice. \n\n\n\nOrganising for Power: The Core Fundamentals is organised by lead trainer Jane McAlevey and hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. \n\n\n\nJane McAlevey has spent years organising in health settings across the UK and Europe – this training exists to support groups to develop core skills to strengthen their campaigns. We will be joining these sessions as Medact to collectively explore approaches to organising in the workplace and communities\, how to bring people in and build power for health justice. We will practice the core skills and reflect on how we can bring these practices into our campaigns. \n\n\n\nYou can sign up below to participate with Medact for the O4P training — please register your interest by Friday 22nd April. \n\n\n\nLogistics\n\n\n\nThe 6-week course is due to take place every Tuesday from 5 – 7pm BST between the 10th May and 14th June. \n\n\n\nWe will hold an additional session at the end of the course to reflect as Medact on the training. \n\n\n\nWe appreciate that starting at 5pm may be difficult for people to join and we would like to support as many people as possible to access and engage in the training — so are considering running an alternative later timeslot of 7 – 9pm on Wednesday. Please indicate which timings would work for you on the registration form. \n\n\n\nFor the training\, it is important as far as possible to have a consistent group of people\, so please only register if you would be able to make the majority of sessions. \n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\nTo see more details and the background to the programme\, please see this Organising for Power Explainer. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions at all about joining the training with Medact\, please get in touch with Medact’s Organiser\, Ben Eder\, at beneder@medact.org. \n\n\n\nRegistration has now closed!

SUMMARY:Medact Research Network Quarterly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Medact Rights Research Network Quarterly is a space for us to come together\, share our work\, discuss new projects\, or delve into deep discussion about research that has caught your interest. We aim to collectively develop our thought and research practices. \nOur network meets every 3 months\, and is a great way to connect with others interested in research in this area. If you’re looking for a way to get involved in new projects or invite people to join your own – the quarterly meeting is a great place to start. \nAs always\, we invite you to share your work with the group! This could be talking briefly about a research project you’ve recently completed or are currently working on\, or a paper you’ve seen that you’d like to share and discuss with the group. \nYou’ll have 5 minutes to introduce the project\, and then we’ll have space in the meeting for people to further discuss the projects that interest them. It’s a great opportunity to explain a new idea and connect with other researchers keen to collaborate on your project. \nInterested? Get in touch with Sarah\, including a few details of what you’d like to talk about! \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:'The Suspect' Author Talk: Mental Health\, Counterterrorism\, and the Surveillance State
DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED: from 21st June to 5th July ***\nDue to industrial action on the transport network\, we have moved the date of this event to Tuesday 5th July. Solidarity with the striking rail workers! \nWhat impact has two decades’ worth of policing and counterterrorism had on the state of mind of Muslims in Britain? The Suspect draws on the author’s experiences to take the reader on a journey through British counterterrorism practices and the policing of Muslims. \nJoin Rizwaan Sabir and Tarek Younis for discussion on the traumatising effects of Sabir’s surveillance\, arrest and detention for suspected terrorism. \nWriting publicly for the first time about the impacts of these experiences\, Sabir argues that these harmful outcomes are not the result of errors in government planning\, but the consequences of using a counterinsurgency warfare approach to fight terrorism and police Muslims. \nTo resist the injustice of these policies and practices\, we need to centre our lived experiences and build networks of solidarity and support. \nPlease register to receive a 20% discount code for The Suspect when purchasing via Pluto Press. \nThis is an in-person event with an option to livestream via Zoom. The venue is Brady Arts & Community Centre\, 192-196 Hanbury St\, London E1 5HU (map). \n[Registration has now closed] \n— \nDr Rizwaan Sabir is a Lecturer in Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and author of The Suspect: Counterterrorism\, Islam\, and the Security State. \nDr Tarek Younis is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Middlesex University. He researches and writes on Islamophobia\, racism in mental health\, and the securitisation of clinical settings. He teaches on the impact of culture\, religion\, globalization and security policies on mental health.

SUMMARY:Securitisation of Health group meeting
DESCRIPTION:**Postponed: new date TBA**\nA number of policing and counter-extremism measures are embedded by the government into UK health services\, at times requiring health workers to work closely with the police and other security agencies. \nThese measures risk undermining therapeutic relationships\, confidentiality and trust in practitioners – as well as drawing health services and workers into becoming an arm of policing and counter-terror agencies. \nThrough research and campaigns\, Medact aims to shift understandings of ‘security’\, from typically “hard” measures (border enforcement\, a punitive criminal justice system\, counter-terror measures) and advocate for collective and human security\, health and wellbeing. Read more about our work on Securitisation. \nThe Securitisation of Health group is for health workers interested in working on these issues through campaigning\, lobbying and research. New members are welcome! If you have any questions\, please email Reem Abu-Hayyeh.

SUMMARY:Economic Justice & Health: Welfare & Health Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Healthcare workers are in a unique position to witness how contact with the welfare system can be harmful to people’s physical and mental health. \n\n\n\nHealing Justice London’s Deaths by Welfare Project investigates deaths linked to welfare reform and the violence of state austerity. Deaths by Welfare is led by China Mills and co-created with John Pring (Disability News Service). The knowledge and leadership of disabled people fighting fatal reforms is central to this work.  \n\n\n\nThe Deaths by Welfare Project and Medact are working together to better understand how healthcare workers bear witness to the harms of the welfare system; navigate complicity in a system that is often disempowering and enraging; and how they practice\, or dream of practising\, allyship with those with lived experience.  \n\n\n\nRegister \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for you if you…\n\n\n\n\nare a healthcare worker who witnesses the impact of the welfare state on people’s health\n\n\n\nare navigating feelings of complicity with a system that doesn’t leave you many other options\n\n\n\nwant to think more about\, or share existing practices of\, allyship\n\n\n\n\nThis will be an exploratory space for sharing\, discussion and collective learning\, which aims to:  \n\n\n\n\nidentify and understand the kinds of resources that healthcare workers know about and/or need to support people in their contact with the welfare system\n\n\n\nthink collectively about what allyship might\, and does\, look like\n\n\n\n\nPlease read before registering…\n\n\n\nEverything about the project is distressing\, so we’ve spent a lot of time creating processes for supporting people to engage – co-designed and informed by the expertise of people with lived experience.  \n\n\n\nHowever\, the session will likely be triggering for different people in different ways\, especially depending on how folks are positioned in relation to the welfare system\, their experiences of cumulative harm\, trauma\, and distress. \n\n\n\nWe want to honour the legitimacy of your self-knowledge (that you know yourself best) while also understanding how the violence of the system shows up in so many ways (in our bodies\, and our emotions) both every day and sometimes unexpectedly. We would like you to participate in a way that honours how you’re feeling and that prioritises care. There will be other opportunities to connect with us if now isn’t right for you. Please do what’s right for you at this time. \n\n\n\nPlease find some resources available here:  \n\n\n\n\nHJL aftercare menu \n\n\n\nThe GEN Grief toolkit \n\n\n\nHJL’s events including monthly grief circle\, weekly breath circle and restorative yoga\n\n\n\n\nRegistrations are limited to 30 people. Please only register if you are able to attend. Once capacity has been reached\, you will be waitlisted and contacted if a space becomes available. \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed]
