SUMMARY:Research Meeting: 'Kill The Bill'
DESCRIPTION:The government has misleadingly branded the dangerous PCSC Bill a “public health approach” to combating serious violence. In response\, we are putting together a briefing in support of the Kill The Bill movement\, explaining why police-led enforcement is not the same as public health and why this Bill will actually harm health. This is our first research meeting to discuss this work. \nWe especially want to enable those from groups most affected by the Bill to contribute to this work but all are welcome. \nFor more info\, contact office@medact.org

SUMMARY:Access to Healthcare in a Hostile Environment

Now he is calling on everyone to oppose migrant charging in the NHS and call for an end to the hostile environment immigration policies. He speaks of his personal experience facing the hostile environment and campaigning against it. \nVictor\, Simba’s father and long-time Sheffield activist has worked with ASSIST\, Voice for the Voiceless and South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action group (SYMAAG). He speaks passionately about his experience of the hostile environment and local campaigns he has been a part of. \nRizwana is a dentist\, public health consultant and mum here in Sheffield. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:A transformative Green New Deal — getting the BMA on board
DESCRIPTION:Doctors and medical students have been organising within their trade union in support of a radical response to the climate crisis! They have successfully managed to get a Green New Deal motion on to the BMA’s conference agenda – it will be debated at the annual representatives meeting on the weekend of the 13th-14th September. \nIn this event we’ll hear from grassroots organisers within the BMA about what they’ve done so far\, and discuss what we should do next in the campaign to get the BMA to support the Green New Deal. Most importantly we’ll discuss how doctors and med students\, who want to organise for climate justice within the BMA\, can get involved! \nWhether or not you are coming to the BMA annual meeting\, or are even a BMA member – you are warmly invited to this event if you want to see the BMA supporting a Green New Deal. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Patients Not Passports — New Joiners meeting September 2021
DESCRIPTION:The best way to get up to speed with the campaign and get connected with work going on across the country is to come to our next New Joiners meeting on Thursday 9th September. We’ll cover campaign strategy\, hear from some of the groups working on the Patients Not Passports campaign\, and explore the different ways you can get involved. We’re currently building towards a national day of action in October\, so there’s lots to do! \n? Register for the next New Joiners meeting – Thurs 9th September ? \nMost of the Patients Not Passports work happens through locally focused campaign groups\, with groups based in: Sheffield\, Liverpool\, Manchester\, Bristol\, Brighton\, Birmingham\, Oxford; East\, South\, and South East London; Glasgow\, and Wales. If you’re not in any of these places\, don’t worry! Docs Not Cops and Medact’s Migrant Solidarity Group work nationally or we can support you to set up your own local group. You don’t need to work in healthcare to be involved! To win we’ll need everyone working together to oppose NHS charging and there is room for everyone in the campaign. \nIf you can’t make the next New Joiners meeting\, don’t worry – there’ll be another one in a few months or we can make time for a quick phone call with you or connect you directly with your local group. If you have time\, you could check out How NHS staff are fighting back against the ‘hostile environment’ for an overview of the campaign\, or read Challenging Healthcare Charging in the NHS\, a briefing that examines where the Hostile Environment policies came from\, how they work\, what their impact is\, and what we can do about them. \n? Register for the next New Joiners meeting – Thurs 9th September ?

SUMMARY:Alternative Training on Prevent in Healthcare #3
DESCRIPTION:It is possible to create a society in which our collective safety and wellbeing are prioritised. Developing trusting\, healthy relationships with all of our patients is essential to this work. \nHowever\, Prevent – with the government’s stated aim of identifying “vulnerability to radicalisation” – compromises all of this\, and is a source of harm and increased marginalisation. \nWhy is the NHS the only healthcare system in the world with a legal obligation to engage with such a strategy? What aren’t you being told about Prevent in safeguarding training? \nJoin the third in our series of Alternative Trainings on Prevent online on Thursday 30th September at 6pm to learn more\nThis training will seek to shed light on some unanswered questions about Prevent. We will hear from: \n\nMembers of Medact’s Securitisation of Health Group\nFarzana Khan ─ a writer\, director\, cultural producer and award-winning arts educator\, Farzana is the Executive Director and Co-founder of Healing Justice London\nMore to be confirmed\n\nThis event is particularly aimed at people who work or are training in\, study\, or who have worked in health. \nWe are aware that some people may feel some concern or worry about attending the event. As such\, we will be sending an email out to attendees prior to the event detailing how we will be seeking to make this event as safe and secure as possible. \n[Registration has now closed]

Ahead of the conference\, Health for a Green New Deal is running a day-long\, specialised spokesperson training for health workers who are keen to speak out to the media. \n\n\n\nGiving comments and broadcast interviews to the media can seem daunting\, but health workers speaking out can be a powerful way to get our messages across to huge sections of the public. Confidence is key\, and this training will help you to feel prepared and ready to speak out with impact – at COP 26 and beyond! \n\n\n\nThe training\, led by Dr Rita Issa\, will go through the fundamentals of speaking to the press\, preparing for interviews to make sure you nail your messaging\, and we will run practice interviews with feedback from your peers. \n\n\n\nThere are 12 places on this training\, and we will prioritise places for people from the health community who are marginalised\, from communities who are under-represented in the media. If you are interested in attending\, please apply by telling us a bit about yourself in the form. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, get in touch with us on info@health4gnd.uk \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed] \n\n\n\nAbout the lead trainer\n\n\n\nDr Rita Issa is a GP\, academic and activist. She’s appeared on the BBC\, ITV\, Sky News\, Al Jazeera and Novara Media\, among others\, and has trained through a number of media and communications groups\, including as part of the NEON spokesperson network. She’s led on a number of social media campaigns\, making millions of impressions across platforms like Twitter and Tumbler\, and is a columnist for the Independent\, most recently writing a series from her time aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise. www.drritaissa.com | @DrRitaIssa

SUMMARY:Briefing launch: The Public Health Case Against the Policing Bill
DESCRIPTION:The public health case against the policing bill – Briefing launch event\, 15 November 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch this video on YouTube\n\n\nThe government has misleadingly branded the racist and dangerous PCSC (Policing) Bill a “public health approach” to combating serious violence. But health workers in the Medact Research Network debunk these claims in our new briefing The Public Health Case Against the Policing Bill. \nWritten to support the huge groundswell of opposition to this bill in the #KillTheBill movement\, the briefing explains why the measures in the Bill – greater police powers\, repression of protest\, harsher prison sentences\, erosion of confidentiality and increased criminalisation of Gypsy and Traveller communities – will actually harm public health  and entrench discrimination. \nWe aim to articulate and amplify radical public health voices against the Policing Bill’s approach and explore potential alternatives. \nYou’ll hear from health workers who are members of our Research Network and involved in creation of the briefing\, and we’re thrilled to host four fantastic speakers who will discuss public health in the context of crime\, policing and prison: \nLola Olufemi – Lola is a black feminist writer and researcher\, author of Feminism Interrupted: Disrupting Power and Experiments in Imagining Otherwise. Alongside writing\, she is a member of ‘bare minimum‘\, an interdisciplinary anti-work arts collective. Lola also facilitates reading groups/workshops\, occasionally curates\, and is volunteer co-ordinator at the Feminist Library in South London. \nKelsey M – Kelsey is a feminist\, abolitionist organiser based in London\, resisting state violence and working to explore and build transformative justice and community-led responses to violence. As a facilitator with grassroots collectives she delivers workshops exploring community accountability\, bystander intervention\, power\, and tools for campaigning and movement building. \nChelsea McDonagh – Chelsea is a researcher\, Irish Traveller activist and writer. She speaks on a wide range of issues affecting Gypsy and Traveller people including education\, health\, policy and politics. Chelsea is one of the co-founders of the Rom Belong programme\, a KCL Widening Participation programme for Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller pupils and is passionate about improving opportunities for young people. \nKavian Kulasabanathan – Kavian is a paediatric A&E doctor and researcher at the University of Oxford. His interests span socio-political determinants of health\, particularly pertaining to race and class\, alongside community-centered models of care. Kavian organises with PHM-UK and Race & Health collective. \nPresenters covered topics such as the future implications of the PCSC bill\, different visions of public health\, new approaches to care\, and approaches to ‘serious violence’ and socio-economic issues that don’t rely on punitive or carceral responses. There will be lots of time for audience questions!
