SUMMARY:No Palantir in the NHS - South Yorkshire public meeting
DESCRIPTION:Medact Sheffield are hosting a public meeting bringing together stakeholders\, concerned residents\, and health workers across South Yorkshire\, to discuss how we can take collective action to keep Palantir out of our NHS.  \n\n\n\nPalantir is a US-based tech firm specialising in data. The use of their software extends from military targeting in Palestine\, leading to them being named by the UN as a corporate actor in the genocide in Gaza\, to racist predictive policing tactics and many other ethically intolerable practices. \n\n\n\nSince 2021\, NHS England and the UK Government have been entangled in deals with Palantir lacking any transparency. In 2023\, they were awarded a contract for the national rollout of the ‘Federated Data Platform’ (FDP)\, a platform that looks to process patient data between different sectors of healthcare. Many of the South Yorkshire NHS healthcare providers are in the process of adopting the FDP.  \n\n\n\nWe do not believe that the NHS should be doing deals with the likes of Palantir. They cannot be trusted\, they are enabling a genocide\, deals like this will only deepen societal inequalities\, and it will further entrench and continue the insidious privatisation of our NHS.  \n\n\n\nIt is possible to stop the rollout of the FDP! Health trusts and boards have the power to say no to the FDP and opt for an alternative\, as we are already seeing in other areas of the UK. We believe this is possible in South Yorkshire\, but only with you and collective action! Let’s send a strong message to NHS England and the UK Government that Palantir and companies like it are not welcome in our NHS.  \n\n\n\nJoin us to find out more about the campaign and how we can strategically take action within South Yorkshire to say NO PALANTIR IN THE NHS.Doors open at 6:30pm with food provided\, and the event will begin at 7:00pm. It’s a hybrid event\, taking place in person at the Quaker Meeting House and online via Zoom.If you can’t make this public meeting but want to find out more\, contact us on sheffield@medact.org or check out the toolkit here https://www.medact.org/2024/resources/toolkits/no-palantir-in-the-nhs-campaign-toolkit/

SUMMARY:Unhealthy Liaisons - NHS Collaboration with Counter Terror Policing
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we launch a new briefing: ‘Unhealthy Liaisons: NHS Collaboration with the Counter Terrorism Clinical Consultancy Service (CTCSS)’\, written by Professor Charlotte Heath-Kelly.  \n\n\n\nCT CCS is an NHS–police mental health team that evolved from the Vulnerability Support Hubs\, which were exposed in the 2021 Medact report Racism\, mental health and pre-crime policing. It raises serious concerns about the nature of medical cooperation with Counter Terrorism Policing. \n\n\n\nWe will reveal details about this worrying service\, and be joined by a panel discussion with expert speakers on: the implications of this collaboration\, harms of the securitisation of health\, co-optation of health workers into counter-terror policing\, and the encroachment of counter-terror policing in healthcare and public sector spaces. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss how we can go about challenging these practices in the current political context\, and as part of Medact’s work campaigning to end Prevent Duty in the NHS.  \n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\nDr Charlotte Heath-Kelly is a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. She is currently completing a 5 year study\, funded by the European Commission\, investigating the different Prevention of Violent Extremism policies used by European nations. The focus is on the integration of healthcare professionals and pre-crime logics\, or their absence\, in European counterterrorism. Professor Heath-Kelly has published five books with Manchester University Press & Routledge\, and more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in international academic journals. \n\n\n\nDr Layla Aitlhadj is the Director and Senior caseworker at Prevent Watch\, an NGO that supports individuals who have been impacted by the Prevent duty. She has been directly involved with 300 of the 700+ cases that have been documented by Prevent Watch to date. She co-authored the People’s Review of Prevent and the Response to Shawcross report with Prof John Holmwood and has contributed to a number of articles\, UN submissions and reports as an expert in Prevent. \n\n\n\nDr Tarek Younis is the Racial Justice Researcher at Healing Justice London and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Middlesex University. He researches and writes on Islamophobia\, racism in mental health and the politics of psychology. He teaches on the impact of culture\, religion\, globalisation\, and security policies on mental health. As a registered clinical psychologist\, he primarily attends to experiences of racism\, Islamophobia\, and state violence in his private practice. His book is called The Muslim\, State and Mind: Psychology in Times of Islamophobia. \n\n\n\nNina Navid is the Racial Justice Campaigner at Amnesty International UK\, focusing on counter-terrorism\, policing and supporting activists to take anti-racist action. She has previously worked in Amnesty’s Government and Political Relations team\, and as a Crisis & Tactical Campaigner. Prior to working at Amnesty\, she worked for the Shadow Minister for Women & Equalities. \n\n\n\nJim Killock is Executive Director at Open Rights Group. Since joining Open Rights Group in January 2009\, Jim has led campaigns against three strikes and the Digital Economy Act\, the company Phorm and its plans to snoop on UK users\, and against pervasive government Internet surveillance. He is working on data protection and privacy issues\, as well as helping ORG to grow in size and breadth. In February 2024\, ORG released a new report\, Prevent and the Pre-Crime State: How unaccountable data sharing is harming a generation. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event\, so please indicate when registering whether you wish to attend online via Zoom or in-person at a venue in Shoreditch\, East London. Deadline for in-person registration is July 8th. The venue is accessible and full details will be provided on registration.

SUMMARY:H4GND x Uplift Climate Messaging Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to partner with Uplift for a messaging workshop on health and climate justice.  \n\n\n\nUplift are working to support the movement for a just and fossil fuel-free UK\, including coordinating the Stop Rosebank campaign and the Warm this Winter Coalition. \n\n\n\nHealth workers are a critical part of the campaign against deadly fossil fuels\, and the fight for a just transition to a new economic system that creates the conditions that people really need to be healthy and thrive.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be a collaborative\, participatory\, fun session to bring together expertise from Uplift alongside the expertise of health workers in the HGND network to develop effective messaging for our national climate justice campaign.  \n\n\n\nThe workshop’s outcomes will form the basis of messaging that we use to lobby MPs\, speak to the media\, and organise in our local communities.  \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to: \n\n\n\n\nLearn about how to centre health in developing effective messaging to campaign for a fossil free UK and climate justice\n\n\n\n\n\nExplore how we can make these messages relevant to our local communities\n\n\n\n\n\nBuild connections with others passionate about climate & health justice for campaigning together in future \n\n\n\n\nPracticalities: \n\n\n\nWe really encourage people to join in person at Pelican House if you can. We have some budget to support with travel costs\, and lunch will be provided! However\, we will be running this as a hybrid event so there is an option for a small group of people to join online.  \n\n\n\nRegistrations for this event have now closed.

SUMMARY:Neoliberalism\, Security and the Politics of Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The fields of mental health hold the potential to depoliticise experiences that are deeply connected to our social\, political and economic environments. By focusing on individual conditions\, we risk disregarding those root causes\, such as poverty\, racism and oppression. \n\n\n\nMental health disciplines are not apolitical fields\, and may fail to interrogate the boundaries and limitations of medicine\, psychiatry and psychology. Spaces that should centre care and patient autonomy can double as places of producing “loyal\, low-risk and productive citizens” (The Muslim\, State and Mind). This depoliticisation of mental health disciplines is particularly relevant for racialised minorities\, like Muslims. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to host a panel discussion with clinical psychologist\, academic and author Tarek Younis (The Muslim\, State and Mind: Psychology in Times of Islamophobia\, 2022)\, Securitisation of Health group member and trainee psychiatrist Mashal Iftikhar\, and Medact’s Research Manager Hil Aked whose current project Criminalising Distress explores the harmful impact of policing in mental health care. \n\n\n\nUsing case studies and experiences\, our panel will explore the alleged “apolitical” position of psychiatry and psychology; how psychological theories and practices can work to serve State interests and perpetuate racism and inequality; how austerity and the political economy can cause and exacerbate a population’s poor mental health; and whether the solutions to our mental health crisis can even be found in mental health spaces. They will touch on the increasing securitisation of supposed spaces of care\, and the harmful impacts to public health of pressure on providers to report and surveille their patients. \n\n\n\nWe hope to create a space of collective exploration and expansion of our understanding of individualised “mental illness” and treatments and cures beyond the boundaries of clinical pathology. We would encourage anyone interested in the research\, policy or practice of mental health\, the securitisation of health\, as well as anyone with lived experience of mental illness to attend. Following the panel discussion there will be time for audience questions. \n\n\n\nWe’re at capacity for in-person attendance. \n\n\n\nFor those who have been confirmed as attending in-person\, the venue has been changed to the Human Rights Action Centre\, 25 New Inn Yard\, London EC2A 3EA (map) just 5 minutes from Medact. \n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:'The Suspect' Author Talk: Mental Health\, Counterterrorism\, and the Surveillance State
DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED: from 21st June to 5th July ***\nDue to industrial action on the transport network\, we have moved the date of this event to Tuesday 5th July. Solidarity with the striking rail workers! \nWhat impact has two decades’ worth of policing and counterterrorism had on the state of mind of Muslims in Britain? The Suspect draws on the author’s experiences to take the reader on a journey through British counterterrorism practices and the policing of Muslims. \nJoin Rizwaan Sabir and Tarek Younis for discussion on the traumatising effects of Sabir’s surveillance\, arrest and detention for suspected terrorism. \nWriting publicly for the first time about the impacts of these experiences\, Sabir argues that these harmful outcomes are not the result of errors in government planning\, but the consequences of using a counterinsurgency warfare approach to fight terrorism and police Muslims. \nTo resist the injustice of these policies and practices\, we need to centre our lived experiences and build networks of solidarity and support. \nPlease register to receive a 20% discount code for The Suspect when purchasing via Pluto Press. \nThis is an in-person event with an option to livestream via Zoom. The venue is Brady Arts & Community Centre\, 192-196 Hanbury St\, London E1 5HU (map). \n[Registration has now closed] \n— \nDr Rizwaan Sabir is a Lecturer in Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and author of The Suspect: Counterterrorism\, Islam\, and the Security State. \nDr Tarek Younis is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Middlesex University. He researches and writes on Islamophobia\, racism in mental health\, and the securitisation of clinical settings. He teaches on the impact of culture\, religion\, globalization and security policies on mental health.
