SUMMARY:Medact Birmingham: Housing & Health campaign meeting
DESCRIPTION:Meet other Medact members and health workers local to Birmingham who are interested in our Economic Justice work\, hear the latest updates on our Druids Heath campaign\, and find out about how to get involved! \nThe Economic Justice & Health group is currently working in Birmingham to support the Druids Heath Community Forum and their Build 1ST campaign—a community campaign organising against the demolition of council housing in Druids Heath. \n“Build 1ST Druids Heath” is a campaign to build first before eviction\, ensuring that residents get to move to a new house\, stay in the area and only move once: into a permanent\, quality home within their communities\, alongside a guaranteed right to return for those families who have already been moved. \nLast year\, health workers launched a petition demanding that Birmingham City Council listen to residents. At this meeting we’ll discuss how else we can support the community in Druids Heath\, and how we can win the Build First demand. \nWe’ll also explore the impact of housing on health more widely\, and the health community’s involvement in organising around the housing crisis. \nWhether you’ve been involved in our work for a while or are new to Medact\, everyone is welcome! If you have any questions about this campaign or our economic justice work\, drop me a line at jordilopezbotey@medact.org  \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:We Demand Better: Cost of Living march & rally
DESCRIPTION:Portland Place\, London | Assemble from 11am | March departs 12pm | Rally 1pm \nOn Saturday 18 June\, the trade union movement is mobilising in London to tell this government that we demand better. Medact will be participating as a health bloc! \nWe are witnessing the impact of the cost of living crisis on the lives of our most vulnerable patients and communities. We are seeing the biggest squeeze on households in decades\, with millions forced to choose between heating and eating. The Spring Budget didn’t do anywhere near enough to lift the hardest hit out of financial hardship and poverty. \nMinisters partied while people died. Now they do nothing while living standards plummet and P&O lays off hundreds of workers on the spot—an example of the eroding employment rights in a country where there are more people living in poverty at work than out of work. \nWe demand better! \n\nA real pay rise for every worker and a real living wage for all\nRespect and security for all workers: ban zero hours contracts\, ban fire & rehire\, decent sick pay\nAn end to racism at work\nTax energy profits to pay our bills\nA raise to universal credit\nBoost union bargaining rights\n\nFor those outside of London\, use this TUC resource to find a free or low-cost coach. \nRegister to receive updates and more details closer to the time. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:No To Arms Fairs - Refugees and Migrants Welcome
DESCRIPTION:Next week we are seeing a return to ‘business-as-usual’\, with the UK government’s annual Security and Policing Fair taking place in Farnborough on 15-17 March. \nOn Tuesday 15 March at 6pm\, a vigil will be held outside the Home Office in London to remember those who have lost their lives to our government’s border regime and arms trade. \nStand with us against the arms fair – join the WhatsApp Group for the Health Bloc. \nThe Security and Policing Fair brings together arms and surveillance companies with policing\, prison  and border enforcement agencies to sell their wares and share tactics with government representatives from around the world. In previous years\, arms companies such as BAE Systems\, Babcock and Thales exhibited to representatives of countries such as Saudi Arabia\, Egypt and Israel. \nDespite the UK government’s recent assurances that it would be easing visa requirements for certain Ukrainians fleeing war\, this year’s fair will be focusing on border enforcement and surveillance technologies. \nMedact members will be attending this vigil to oppose the fair\, and to call for a move away from violent security measures to human security that prioritises collective health and wellbeing. \nJoin our WhatsApp Group to organise and stay updated about our health bloc at the vigil. If you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to email reemabuhayyeh@medact.org. \nIf you can’t attend in person but would like to show your solidarity\, here are some materials you can share online (via JCWI).

SUMMARY:St. George's Global Health Conference 2017
DESCRIPTION:Challenging Borders\nAddressing Barriers to Global Health\nSt George’s University of London Medsin Group is hosting their annual Global Health Conference 2017. ‘Challenging Borders: Addressing the barriers to Global Health’ will take place on Saturday 25th February. \nThe conference aims to shine a spotlight on the impact of division as an obstacle to global health. Borders can be physical\, such as nation lines or geographical impediments\, man-made\, such as walls and prisons\, but also more abstract\, such as stigma towards mental health. All create a barrier to personal\, community\, and international well-being. Many examples exist today\, and none more topical than the myriad issues surrounding migrant health. Success has been varied in addressing these barriers. \n‘Challenging Borders’ focuses on the effects of these barriers on health and what can be done to overcome them. The day will consist of a morning of talks and in the afternoon attendees will have the opportunity to engage in stimulating interactive sessions to broaden their understanding and approach to these issues. We are announcing the line up of high-profile speakers and organisations throughout the coming weeks. Tickets are available from St George’s Student Union website and you can stay up to date through our Facebook Page. \nTickets: https://www.sgsu.org.uk/ents/event/794/\nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/742508639247932/
