SUMMARY:St. George's Global Health Conference 2017
DESCRIPTION:Challenging Borders\nAddressing Barriers to Global Health\nSt George’s University of London Medsin Group is hosting their annual Global Health Conference 2017. ‘Challenging Borders: Addressing the barriers to Global Health’ will take place on Saturday 25th February. \nThe conference aims to shine a spotlight on the impact of division as an obstacle to global health. Borders can be physical\, such as nation lines or geographical impediments\, man-made\, such as walls and prisons\, but also more abstract\, such as stigma towards mental health. All create a barrier to personal\, community\, and international well-being. Many examples exist today\, and none more topical than the myriad issues surrounding migrant health. Success has been varied in addressing these barriers. \n‘Challenging Borders’ focuses on the effects of these barriers on health and what can be done to overcome them. The day will consist of a morning of talks and in the afternoon attendees will have the opportunity to engage in stimulating interactive sessions to broaden their understanding and approach to these issues. We are announcing the line up of high-profile speakers and organisations throughout the coming weeks. Tickets are available from St George’s Student Union website and you can stay up to date through our Facebook Page. \nTickets: https://www.sgsu.org.uk/ents/event/794/\nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/742508639247932/

SUMMARY:Forum 2016 - Healthy Planet\, Better World
DESCRIPTION:Human health is dependent on a healthy environment. Yet we are damaging ecosystems and depleting natural resources in ways that undermine our ability to sustain healthy and equitable societies. \nClimate change\, desertification\, ocean acidification and biodiversity loss are among many ecological threats to health. These impact on health via multiple pathways that include reducing food and water security\, altering disease patterns\, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events\, and multiplying the risk of conflict. \nThe threats posed by climate change and wider environmental degradation are serious. According to a Lancet-UCL Commission\, climate change could be “sufficient to trigger a discontinuity in the long-term progression of humanity”. Indeed\, on the basis of current emission trajectories\, “temperature rises in the next 85 years may be incompatible with an organised global community”. \nHowever\, the challenge this represents also presents a number of opportunities to promote health\, both short and long-term. These include reducing air pollution\, promoting active forms of transport\,  healthier food systems\, and working towards a fairer\, more equal economy and society. \nThe health community has both a mandate and an interest in calling for the social\, political and economic actions required to mitigate and adapt to environmental change. \nFor more details about the event see: the conference page\nFor recordings and resources see: presentation resources from the conference

SUMMARY:East London People’s Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:The London People’s Health Movement (PHM)\, in collaboration with local organisations including Keep Our NHS Public\, Docs not Cops\, Social Action for Health\, Medact and Queen Mary’s University \, is organising a three-day People’s Health Assembly in East London in October 2016. This event will follow the tradition of the global PHM in working closely with local organisations\, building on local knowledge and strengthening local networks in the continuing struggle for equity and the right to health. \nWhy attend this event\n Recent political events have laid bare the divisions that run through our society. While our leaders are deserting us\, newly politicised people seek to forge a new path. But what form will this change take? For over five years\, the public sector has been struggling under austerity measures\, and poverty is on the rise. The People’s Health Assembly will look at the fractures within our community\, how they affect health\, and how people are mobilising to fight back and ensure better physical and mental health outcomes. The assembly is being held in East London and aims to be inclusive\, community-led and address local concerns. \nIssues:\n The Assembly will explore some of the most critical local concerns: – The NHS: what are the current challenges to providing universal healthcare\, free at the point of use? – Housing: what are the impacts of gentrification on wellbeing? How is your community resisting rent hikes and eviction? – Migrants: how have xenophobia and the recent rise in hate crimes affected your community? How has migration enriched East London? Please get in touch if you would like to participate! \nPHALondon2016@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics and Medact Conference 2016
DESCRIPTION:Resources from the event are now available on this page\nAntibiotics and Farming: Prescriptions for change\n14th April 2016\, Kennedy Lecture Theatre\, Institute of Child Health\, University College London\, London\, WC1N 1EH\nThe critical nature of antimicrobial resistance has been well documented by experts across the globe\, and the inappropriate use of drugs in livestock farming is widely recognised as a contributory risk. \nThe UK Government-appointed O’Neill Review found that there is “compelling” scientific evidence that antibiotic resistance is being transmitted from farm animals to humans and states that this warrants a significant reduction in farm antibiotic use. The recent finding of colistin-resistant E. coli from pigs and humans in England and Wales is the latest sign that the future efficacy of our antibiotics is under threat. \nAnd yet\, the overuse of these vital medicines within the farming sector continues. Across Europe\, twice as many antibiotics are used in farm animals than are used in humans. Routine\, purely preventative dosing of groups of healthy animals remains legal within the EU\, despite opposition from the European Medicines Agency and several European countries. In the UK\, veterinary use of antibiotics classified as “critically important for humans” is at an all-time high. \nOur conference will bring together multi-disciplinary stakeholders; from policy-makers\, health professionals\, livestock farmers and veterinarians\, to scientists\, civil-society and environmental groups. The event will explore practical steps to reduce farm antibiotic use; drawing on successful interventions taking place across the EU. \nDownload the full Agenda here\nTravel \nTrain – King’s Cross and Euston mainline railway stations are within walking distance and the Institute is easily accessible by underground from other national and international rail terminals including Charing Cross\, Waterloo\, Victoria\, Marylebone\, Paddington and Liverpool Street.  The closest underground stations are Holborn on the Central Line and Russell Square on the Piccadilly Line. \nParking – There are no parking facilities for delegates but there are National Car Parks in Marchmont Street and Judd Street. There are also meters on the roads adjacent to the Institute. \nA map is also available from the institute’s website  \nFacilities for the disabled \nAll the conference facilities including the lecture theatre are easily accessible by wheelchair and the theatre is fitted with an induction loop system. Please confirm if you would like to make use of these facilities. \nRefreshments \nTea and coffee will be provided as will a sandwich lunch. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any dietary requirements. \nFor more information\, please contact Claire cwest@saveourantibiotics.eu\, 07814 910 295 \nThe Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics is a coalition of health\, medical\, environmental and animal welfare groups campaigning to stop the overuse of antibiotics in animal farming. It was founded by Compassion in World Farming\, the Soil Association and Sustain and is supported by the Jeremy Coller Foundation \nMedact is a London-based global health charity whose goal is to inspire and enable health professionals to act on the social\, political\, ecological and economic determinants of health and health inequality. Its work with Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics is part of a larger body of work supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation

SUMMARY:Launching The People Vs PFI
DESCRIPTION:Follow us on twitter @thepeoplevspfi and help spread the word by using the #PPLvsPFI hashtag\nPFI – The Biggest Scam You’ve Never Heard Of\n\n\n\nYou’d never be able to tell from the outside\, but hundreds of our hospitals\, schools\, prisons roads and even homes are no longer controlled by us\, the people. Why? Because politicians have given away our public buildings to private companies – only to have us rent them back at extortionate cost. Our money is making these tax-avoiding corporations rich\, while we end up losing frontline services. This is what they mean by the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).\n\n\n\nPFI – Doesn’t Make Sense\n\n\n\nEvery year PFI costs us £10 billion – more than the entire 2012 Olympics! The UK taxpayer will pay almost £300bn for PFI – but most of that will end up in offshore tax-havens.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe government and private contractors consistently conceal details of PFI contracts. Why should public spending be allowed to be kept secret?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe worst part of it all is that the public were given no choice about PFI. PFI was implemented by corruption of the democratic process. We need to take back our rights.\n\n\n\nPFI – Needs To Go\n\n\n\nThere is an alternative – there are cheaper and better ways to provide public infrastructure. It’s time for us to stand up and say NO to the politicians and private contractors that want privatisation-by-stealth. It’s time to make public services ours again. Join public sector workers\, professional groups\, trade unionists\, campaigners\, researchers\, journalists and members of the public for a one day event to launch this vital campaign to end PFI. Hear from experts in the field to learn how you can make a difference\, and tell your own story about how PFI is harming you\, your family and your country.\n\n\nTo find out more\, learn how to contribute and register\, email: peoplevspfi@gmail.com\n\n\n\nMorning \n9-9:45 am Registratio9 \n8:45 am Introduction Why This Conference – Dr David McCoy \n10:00 – 11:30 am  Why PFI is Unacceptable \nPFI in context: financialisation\, privatisation and the debt industry – Ann Pettifor (Advocacy International) \nPFI impact on the NHS: financially disastrous and clinically unsafe – David Price (Queen Mary University) \nPFI inequity: shifting the debt burden to the next generation – Ashley Seager (Inter-generational Foundation) \nPFI and the Global South: financial extraction and the growing wealth gap – Nick Hildyard (Corner House) \nPFI and social housing: ruthless profiteering at the expense of democratic accountability – Stuart Hodkinson (University of Leeds) \n11.45– 1pm \nPublic Testimony Against PFI Campaigners\, public service users\, communities Chair: Dr. Jacky Davis\, (Keep Our NHS Public) \n2-4pm Parallel Workshops \nFollow the money – how does private finance work as a corporate scam? SUMMARY:2nd People's Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:This event is being run by the People’s Health Movement. For more information about PHM\, please visit www.phm-uk.org.uk. The People´s Health Movement (PHM) has its roots deep in the grassroots people’s movement and owes its genesis to many health networks and activists who have been concerned by the growing inequities in health over the last 25 years. \nBackground and Context\n The word ‘austerity’ has recently gained prominence. It is used to describe a wide range of cuts to public spending across services including welfare support\, education\, health and social care. What is often overlooked is how ‘austerity’ is a deliberate policy by the government to redistribute resources from the poor to the rich through bailout of banks\, corporate tax evasion and private finance initiatives. Austerity and its’ effects are being imposed selectively\, unevenly and unfairly across society with devastating impacts on disadvantaged groups pushing them further into poverty\, deprivation and poor health. It is also being used to justify a further expansion of privatisation\, corporate welfare and excessive profiteering – not least of all in the NHS. Whilst this is happening in various ways and at different speeds in Scotland\, England\, Wales and Northern Ireland\, it is a crisis affecting the whole of the UK. Therefore\, the political\, economic and ideological underpinnings of austerity need to be questioned and challenged. This is a priority for those working in the health sector\, and for those seeking to reverse the trend of widening health inequalities. \nWhy attend?\n – Learn more about the background to austerity measures and their impact on local and global determinants of health\, on health and related services and on health inequity in different parts of the UK. – Learn skills for movement building and activism with community and campaign groups; and strategies for challenging austerity – Dialogue and Network with organisations and individuals involved in health and social activism. – Take part in developing a People’s Health Manifesto and help build a progressive health movement to challenge austerity and exclusion throughout the UK \nClick here to download the flyer.\nFor more information and to register\, please click here.
