SUMMARY:Health blocs @ Global Day of Action for Climate Justice 2022
DESCRIPTION:Global temperatures\, rising. Energy bills\, rising. Billionaire profits\, rising. Health injustice\, rising. \nLast year\, you and the health community came together in your 100s across the UK for the global day of action during COP 26 in Glasgow. Since then\, energy companies are making record-breaking profits while people are being forced to choose between heating and eating.\n\nGovernment policies\, both nationally and globally\, are causing devastation to people’s health. Working people and people of colour—who have contributed the least to the problem—are paying the price with killer famines\, floods\, crop failures\, fires and rising poverty. \n\nThis November\, when world leaders meet in Egypt for COP27\, African movements have called for a Global Day of Action for climate justice. \n\nThe UK Government must stop its climate wrecking plans\, and implement real climate solutions that solve both the climate and cost of living crises. To stop this crisis we need action that cuts carbon\, tackles inequality and ends the injustices baked into our world. Communities in the global south need urgent climate finance and reparations for the loss and damages that have caused mass destruction of lives and livelihoods. \n\nJustice won’t be handed to us by world leaders or delivered by corporations. We need to organise in our communities to ensure that not only is no one is cold or hungry this winter\, but that we stop the headlong rush into climate catastrophe.\n\nSign up to join your local health bloc on the day! Medact London\, Edinburgh\, Newcastle\, Sheffield\, Bristol and Blackpool. Select where you will be marching in the form below.\n\nYou can see the full list of locations where demonstrations are taking place on the climatejustice.uk website. If you are planning to join demonstrations not listed above\, please get in touch with Rob Abrams\, Climate & Health Campaign & Programme lead on robabrams@medact.org.\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:We Demand Better: Cost of Living march & rally
DESCRIPTION:Portland Place\, London | Assemble from 11am | March departs 12pm | Rally 1pm \nOn Saturday 18 June\, the trade union movement is mobilising in London to tell this government that we demand better. Medact will be participating as a health bloc! \nWe are witnessing the impact of the cost of living crisis on the lives of our most vulnerable patients and communities. We are seeing the biggest squeeze on households in decades\, with millions forced to choose between heating and eating. The Spring Budget didn’t do anywhere near enough to lift the hardest hit out of financial hardship and poverty. \nMinisters partied while people died. Now they do nothing while living standards plummet and P&O lays off hundreds of workers on the spot—an example of the eroding employment rights in a country where there are more people living in poverty at work than out of work. \nWe demand better! \n\nA real pay rise for every worker and a real living wage for all\nRespect and security for all workers: ban zero hours contracts\, ban fire & rehire\, decent sick pay\nAn end to racism at work\nTax energy profits to pay our bills\nA raise to universal credit\nBoost union bargaining rights\n\nFor those outside of London\, use this TUC resource to find a free or low-cost coach. \nRegister to receive updates and more details closer to the time. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:For Health’s Sake\, Stop Funding Fossil Fuels! Protest at the Treasury
DESCRIPTION:Location: Her Majesty’s Treasury\, Westminster\, London. Exact meeting place TBC. \nOn Saturday 11th June\, we’re teaming up with our friends at Doctors for Extinction Rebellion to take the call of the health community for climate justice straight to the UK government on the steps of the Treasury in Westminster. Join us! \nRegister \nJust months after hosting the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow\, the UK government greenlit  the construction of the Abigail gas field off the Scottish coast. Now\, the even larger Jackdaw field could be weeks away from getting the same approval. \nYet were construction of the Jackdaw field be approved\, the gas extracted wouldn’t come online until 2025— the same year that the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently warned that greenhouse gas emissions must peak.  \nInstead of investing in the just transition needed to finally switch off gas in a way that’s fair on workers and dependent communities\, the UK government is pushing to have gas reclassified as a ‘green investment’. \nThe IPCC’s recent report is unambiguous. We are facing our last chance to stave off a climate disaster—the health implications of which would be catastrophic for communities worldwide\, especially those already impacted. \nStand with us outside the Treasury on June 11 to bring the call of the health community for climate justice straight to the UK government! \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:UK Gov: Join the Nuclear Ban Treaty World Meeting!
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 24 May at 1pm\, we invite you to join us and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) outside the Foreign\, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to urge the UK government to attend the First Meeting of State Parties (1MSP) of the Nuclear Ban Treaty. The UK cannot remain silent on the nuclear ban and must join the treaty! \nAt the end of June\, state representatives from across the world will be meeting in Vienna for the 1MSP of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). \nThis is a momentous occasion\, where member states of the TPNW will discuss the next steps to advancing the treaty and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. \nThe UK government\, however\, has continued to refuse to engage with the TPNW—and it has shown no intention of attending this incredibly important world meeting as an observer. \nThis will be a small and peaceful rally where we will aim to hand in a letter calling on the government to attend the 1MSP\, and this letter signed by over 1 million people and endorsed by the Dalai Lama\, calling for: \n\nan immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops;\na commitment from Russia and NATO to renounce the use of nuclear weapons in this conflict;\nstates to work toward the elimination of nuclear weapons.\n\nIf you have any questions about this rally and/or would like to attend\, email office@medact.org.

SUMMARY:No To Arms Fairs - Refugees and Migrants Welcome
DESCRIPTION:Next week we are seeing a return to ‘business-as-usual’\, with the UK government’s annual Security and Policing Fair taking place in Farnborough on 15-17 March. \nOn Tuesday 15 March at 6pm\, a vigil will be held outside the Home Office in London to remember those who have lost their lives to our government’s border regime and arms trade. \nStand with us against the arms fair – join the WhatsApp Group for the Health Bloc. \nThe Security and Policing Fair brings together arms and surveillance companies with policing\, prison  and border enforcement agencies to sell their wares and share tactics with government representatives from around the world. In previous years\, arms companies such as BAE Systems\, Babcock and Thales exhibited to representatives of countries such as Saudi Arabia\, Egypt and Israel. \nDespite the UK government’s recent assurances that it would be easing visa requirements for certain Ukrainians fleeing war\, this year’s fair will be focusing on border enforcement and surveillance technologies. \nMedact members will be attending this vigil to oppose the fair\, and to call for a move away from violent security measures to human security that prioritises collective health and wellbeing. \nJoin our WhatsApp Group to organise and stay updated about our health bloc at the vigil. If you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to email reemabuhayyeh@medact.org. \nIf you can’t attend in person but would like to show your solidarity\, here are some materials you can share online (via JCWI).

SUMMARY:Health blocs @ Global Day of Action for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:What’s happening?\nThis Autumn\, the Decarbonisation and Economic Strategy Bill (otherwise known as the Green New Deal Bill) returns to Parliament. The Bill aims to end licensing for new fossil fuel projects\, promote the rapid decarbonisation of our economy\, support healthy food systems\, safeguard natural habitats\, restore biodiversity and tackle inequality\, all the while investing in millions of good quality green jobs! \nThe Bill presents a unique opportunity for the promotion of both public and planetary health ─ one in which the health community has a crucial role to play. The changes we’re calling for are not small. To win\, we need to build public support to put pressure on MPs to do the right thing. \nWhat will the action involve?\nThis action will involve setting up a local ‘Climate Clinic’ to engage the public on the health impacts of the climate crisis and encourage them to take action by signing a postcard to their MP asking that they support the Green New Deal Bill. \nWe’re encouraging groups to run their Climate Clinics on either Saturday 25th September or Saturday 2nd October – but if this isn’t possible for you/your group\, please do still sign up\, it’ll be okay to run it on another day that suits you. \nWe’ve produced an action guide that explains the step-by-step process of how to set up your own Climate Clinic. Additionally\, we will be running training calls on 13th and 27th September going over the process of setting up a Climate Clinic and how to have persuasive conversations with members of the public. \nSign up now to join the action!\nSignup for this action has now closed!

SUMMARY:No Borders in the NHS! Week of Action\, 23-27 October
DESCRIPTION:The Hostile Environment is turning the NHS into the new frontier of border control. Join us as we take action against patient charging and demand an end to borders in the NHS! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHostile Environment immigration policies are undermining the founding principles of the NHS. People are turned away from the healthcare they need. People are turned away from the healthcare they need. Immigration checks are becoming normalised in receptions and wards across the country. NHS hospitals routinely share patient data with the Home Office. People are harassed by debt collectors for huge bills they will never be able to pay.  \n\n\n\nSave the dates! No Borders In The NHS: Week of Action\, 23-27 October. People all over the country will take action across five themed days of action\, more info to follow! \n\n\n\nWe must remember all those whose lives have been devastated by border controls in healthcare\, continue to resist through collective organising in hospitals and workplaces\, and stand in solidarity with all those who are impacted by the hostile environment. Join us! \n\n\n\nNo Borders In The NHS: Week of Action\, 23 – 27 October\n\n\n\nPeople all over the country will take action across five themed days.\n\n\n\nSaturday 23rd – Remember and Resist!\n\n\n\nWe begin by remembering and honouring all those whose lives have been destroyed by racist Hostile Environment policies. October 23rd marks four years since the introduction of upfront charging for migrants in the NHS\, and two years since the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants who were found in a lorry in Essex. \n\n\n\nToday we remember Nasar Ullah Khan\, who died after being denied treatment for heart failure. We remember Elfreda Spencer\, who died because she could not pay £30\,000 upfront for chemotherapy. We remember Kelema Mulat\, who died following a 6 week delay in breast cancer treatment. We remember Elvis\, who died of coronavirus without help because he was too scared of being charged or deported if he came forward for treatment. We remember all whose lives have been made disposable at the hands of Britain’s hostile border controls—their bravery\, their struggles to survive and their campaigns for a better world. \n\n\n\nJoin campaign groups across the country holding street stalls and vigils: \n\n\n\nLondon: \n\n\n\n\n12 noon – 1pm @ Lewisham Hospital A&E\, SE13. With Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign\, Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network and Lewisham Citizens\n\n\n\n12 noon @ Whitechapel Underground Station. With Tower Hamlets Keep Our NHS Public\n\n\n\n12 noon @ Dalston Farmers Market\, St Paul’s Church\, N16. With Hackney Patients Not Passports\, Hackney Keep Our NHS Public\, Akwaaba\, and Feminist Fightback\n\n\n\n6pm @ Walthamstow Town Square\, E17. With Waltham Forest Patients Not Passports\, Waltham Forest Save Our NHS\, and Waltham Forest Migrant Action\n\n\n\n\nBrighton & Hove: \n\n\n\n\n5.30pm @ Peace Statue\, Hove Lawns\, Hove. With Brighton Medact\n\n\n\n\nManchester: \n\n\n\n\nMidday @ St. Mary’s Hospital\, Oxford Road (opposite the Whitworth Gallery)\, Manchester\, M13. With Greater Manchester Patients Not Passports\, Manchester Keep our NHS Public\, Medact Manchester\, and The Greater Manchester Immigraiton Aid Unit\n\n\n\nRally against the Nationality & Borders Bill. 2pm @ St Peter’s Square\, Manchester\, M2 5PD. With NW Unison\, NW NEU\, Greater Immigration Aid Unit\, Lancashire Association Trades Union Councils(LATUC)\, Greater Manchester Association Trades Union Councils\, NW Unison Black Members Committee\, NW TUC Black Members Committee\, Status Now\, and RAPAR.\n\n\n\n\nSun 24th – Free for All Forever: No to Privatisation\n\n\n\nThe introduction of Hostile Environment immigration policies into the NHS goes hand in hand with a wider project of privatising our healthcare system and erosion of its founding principle: that healthcare is a right and should be available to everyone\, regardless of ability to pay or where you’re from. The 2017 introduction of upfront charging in the NHS marked one of the most profound changes since it was established\, forcing NHS Trust to withhold care from people that cannot pay. The new Health and Care Bill\, currently being debated in Parliament will further open the door to privatisation and the undermining of our health system as we know it. \n\n\n\nRead this article by Keep Our NHS Public campaigner\, Alia Butt\, and help us share Docs Not Cops’ video outlining what is happening to the NHS.  \n\n\n\nMon 25th – Solidarity Knows No Borders: End the Hostile Environment\n\n\n\nToday we stand in solidarity with everyone impacted by the Hostile Environment and the racism of border controls. From schools\, to housing\, to healthcare\, the Hostile Environment seeks to destroy lives and undermine access to vital public services. At the same time\, the Government’s new Borders & Nationality Bill – also known as the #AntiRefugeeBill – seeks to create a two tier system for people seeking safety\, normalise offshore migrant prisons\, and limit migrants’ access to justice.  \n\n\n\nToday we will highlight that the immigration system is not broken – it is violent and hostile by design. We will stand with all campaigning for an end to the Hostile Environment in its entirety. \n\n\n\nIn London\, there will be a street stall outside St Thomas’ Hospital to talk to NHS staff about The Hostile Environment and how it will impact their work: \n\n\n\n\n7:30pm – 9pm @ St Thomas’ Hospital\, Westminster Bridge entrance\, SE1. With Lambeth and Southwark Patients Not Passports\n\n\n\n\nIn Sheffield\, there’ll be a street stall outside the Royal Hallamshire to talk to NHS staff about the Hostile Environment\, raise awareness about the Justice for Simba campaign\, and find out how to get more involved with the movement for migrant justice: \n\n\n\n\n4pm @ Royal Hallamshire Hospital\, Sheffield\, S10. With Medact Sheffield\, The Justice for Simba Campaign\, South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group\n\n\n\n\nIn Newcastle\, there’ll be a street stall outside Royal Victoria Infirmary to talk to NHS staff about The Hostile Environment and how it will impact their work: \n\n\n\n\n8am – 9:30am\, Monday 25th @ Royal Victoria Infirmary\, Newcastle\, NE1. With Keep Our NHS Public North East and Medact North East\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 26th – Organise To Win\n\n\n\nThe Hostile Environment seeks to turn those who  care and support the most marginalised in our society into border guards. This is what we must remember when we build our campaigns against racist immigration controls in our public services. The Department of Health will only listen when we organise in our workplaces and in our communities\, to raise collective awareness about what is happening under the Hostile Environment and together refuse to be complicit in this system. \n\n\n\nIt will take all of us to win. That means everybody the Hostile Environment tries to recruit as a border guard\, we must now recruit to our campaign: to be fighters for justice and to stand up for everyone’s right to healthcare. NHS workers have a particular role to play to advocate for patients facing increasing barriers to care and to protect the universal principles that underpin the NHS. \n\n\n\nLook out for a list of street stalls and leafleting at hospitals and town centres near you\, with information about how you can join the campaign wherever you are. \n\n\n\nLondon: \n\n\n\n\n7:30am – 9am @ St Thomas’ Hospital\, Westminster Bridge entrance\, London SE1. With Lambeth and Southwark Patients Not Passports.\n\n\n\n\nLeeds: \n\n\n\n\n7:30 – 9am @ Leeds Infirmary\, Jubilee Wing main entrance\, Leeds\, LS1. With Leeds Keep Our NHS Public\n\n\n\n\nBrighton: \n\n\n\n\n7.45am and 4.45pm @ Royal Sussex County Hospital\, BN2\n\n\n\n4.45pm @ Millview Hospital\, BN3\n\n\n\nTime TBC @ Princess Royal Hospital\, BR6\n\n\n\nTime TBC @ Eastbourne District General Hospital\, BN21\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 27th – No Borders In Healthcare\n\n\n\nOur NHS was founded on the principle of universal healthcare\, free at the point of use for everyone – regardless of background\, nationality\, or ability to pay. The government’s Hostile Environment means this is no longer the case. What we see as a result is people deterred from seeking the care they need\, outright denied treatment on the basis of the documents they have\, questioned about their entitlement to care because of how they look\, the colour of their skin\, or their so called ‘foreign sounding name’\, and people being forced to choose between incurring huge debts\, regularising their immigration status\, or their good health.  \n\n\n\nToday we join forces across the country to make our message clear: no borders in healthcare. The NHS must treat #PatientsNotPassports. \n\n\n\nIf you’re in Newcastle join their banner drop: \n\n\n\n\n8:30am @ The Dome\, Whitley Bay\, Newcastle. With North East Keep Our NHS Public\, and Medact North East\n\n\n\n\nIn Liverpool\, campaigners from Merseyside Solidarity Knows No Borders will be out in the town centre talking to people about the impact of NHS charging and how to join the Patients Not Passports campaign: \n\n\n\n\nMidday @ Liverpool Town Centre (close to Iceland on Kensington). With Merseyside Solidarity Knows No Borders.\n\n\n\n\nIn Bristol\, there’ll be a demo in the town centre calling for an end to NHS Charging and the Hostile Environment: \n\n\n\n\n5pm – 7pm @ The Sails\, by Primark\, Broadmead\, BS1. With Bistol Patients Not Passports and Bristol Medact\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll let you know how to participate online on the day! Get in touch at info@act.patientsnotpassports.co.uk to help get the message out on Wednesday morning.

DESCRIPTION:Right now\, women\, children and men fleeing war\, persecution and conflict need our support. Yet just when the UK needs to uphold its commitments to refugees\, in October the new Nationality and Borders Bill moves closer to becoming law. This bill will make it harder than ever for people who come here to seek safety. \nThe government has committed to take 20\,000 Afghan refugees over the next five years. But that isn’t enough\, and lacks the necessary urgency. While we are hearing accounts of mothers throwing their babies over razor wire in desperation in the face of the horrors facing them under the Taliban\, the UK government plans to make people wait years for resettlement\, and to imprison any who manage to flee to the UK by other means. \nWe can and must do more to welcome refugees\, and not just Afghans. Everyone who crosses borders for safety should be given a fair hearing and a chance to rebuild their lives. \nWe know that our communities can be generous and welcoming and that many people want to do more for those who come here for safety. Through this rally\, we want to show the Government that we oppose this Bill\, and that we want to live in a humane and welcoming society. \nIf you agree\, join us outside Parliament. Hear from refugees and add your voice to the movement to welcome them. The event is for everyone who cares about the rights of people to seek asylum. \nThe rally is being organised by people with experience of the asylum system with support from Solidarity With Refugees\, Women for Refugee Women and IMIX\, but we want it to belong to us all.

SUMMARY:Health Action for the Green New Deal Bill
\nSign up now to join the action!\nThis signup has now closed!

SUMMARY:Health Lobby of MPs for Green Jobs
DESCRIPTION:Why green jobs?\n\n\n\nAs many as 1.9m jobs are at risk of being lost permanently as a result of the impacts of the pandemic. It is vital that the Government now intervenes to invest in job creation\, but if our recovery only increases emissions\, we will only pivot from one crisis to another: Climate Change. \n\n\n\nCreating new\, secure\, well-paid green jobs has to be a priority if we are to build a healthy and sustainable recovery post-COVID. Research by Green New Deal UK shows that\, with the right investment\, the Government could create as many as 1.2m green jobs over the next two years alone. \n\n\n\nGreen jobs aren’t just what we might traditionally expect: people in hard-hats building wind turbines. They’re also jobs in vital\, low-carbon\, sectors such as education and healthcare. By focusing on such key industries\, a green recovery can help us tackle staff-shortages in the NHS at the same time as fighting the climate crisis! \n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I join the lobby?\n\n\n\nSign up via the form. After registering you will receive a link to our digital action guide that sets out the steps on how to set up a meeting with your MP and then prepare for it. We will then be in touch to make sure you linked up with other health workers/students in your area interested in joining the lobby. \n\n\n\nI’m feeling a bit unprepared to lobby my MP….\n\n\n\nThere will be some resources to help you in the action guide\, including a template letter to use to send to your MP and a DIY workshop plan on lobbying MPs that you can look at together with your group. We will also be running MP lobbying training sessions together with Hope For Future on 12th April and 22nd April – you can sign up for these via the registration form. \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Online Storytelling Action for Green Jobs
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 23rd March\, we’re teaming up with Green New Deal UK to run an online storytelling action\, calling on MPs to support the creation of secure\, well-paid green jobs as part of a post-COVID recovery. \n\n\n\nWhy ‘green jobs for all’?\n\n\n\nAs many as 1.9m jobs are at risk of being lost permanently as a result of the impacts of the pandemic. The aim of the action is to amplify support in the health community for the creation of a national green jobs scheme\, highlighting the benefits to public health of ensuring employment that is both secure and sustainable. \n\n\n\nYou can take part at any time during the day of the 23rd March ─ whenever you have 5-10 spare minutes in your day. \n\n\n\n\nSign up now to receive a copy of our digital action guide that lays out in more detail the steps to follow to participate in the action! \n\n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Health & Climate Justice at COP26 ─ health community letter to the UK Government and COP26 leadership
DESCRIPTION:With just under a year to go until the COP26 climate talks start in Glasgow\, the UK Government is far off track to meeting its legally binding emissions targets. To make matters worse\, it was recently revealed that fossil fuel companies\, including BP\, Shell and Equinor have been meeting with the government to discuss plans for the talks next year. \n\n\n\nOn Monday 30th November\, together with Students for Global Health\, we launched our open letter from the health community calling on the UK Government and COP26 leadership to take bold\, decisive action to both ensure a green recovery from Covid-19 and the success of the climate talks in Glasgow next year: \n\n\n\nThe letter makes 3 key demands: \n\n\n\n\nThe UK must commit to a rapid and historically accurate reduction of emissions;\n\n\n\nAll new fossil fuel extractive projects must be permanently cancelled;\n\n\n\nCOP26 must be fossil-free\, with fossil fuel companies and lobbyists barred from decision makers.\n\n\n\n\nRSVP below for the letter’s launch day to receive our action guide complete with template social media posts and emails to help get the word out to a bigger audience! \n\n\n\n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Fridays for Future ─ online action in solidarity with the climate strikers
DESCRIPTION:One year ago\, members of the health community mobilised to show  solidarity with the Youth Climate Strikers taking action for the Global Climate Strike. As thousands of young people all over the world took action for climate justice\, health workers stood with them\, knowing the extent of the public health crisis posed by climate breakdown. \nThis year\, on Friday 25th September\, Fridays for Future\, the international group representing the climate strikers\, has called for another global day of action. They will be calling for a just and green recovery from Covid-19 that sets us on the right path to tackling the climate crisis. \nOn the 25th\, Medact\, in partnership with Health Declares and Students for Global Health\, will be coordinating an online action for members of the health community to show support for the climate strikers remotely. RSVP now to join us! \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Emergency protest - Stop the persecution of Muslims in India
DESCRIPTION:Citizenship rules have been changed in India by the ruling Hindu Nationalist Party. The amendments made give preferential treatment to certain religious groups\, explicitly barring Muslims\, to gain citizenship in India. All this has led to communal violence against Muslims\, who have had their homes\, businesses\, mosques and families targeted\, most recently in Delhi. \nIt is important that the international community stands in solidarity with Muslim communities against this persecution and the recent spate of deadly violence in Delhi\, before it escalates even further.   \nJoin us at this emergency protest this Saturday 29 February outside India House/ the Indian High Commission in London. Medact staff members will be in attendance from 4:30-6:30pm – and we would love it if members joined us. Address details can be found below.  \nThis protest has been called by South Asia Solidarity Group\, SOAS India Society and South Asian Students Against Fascism \nIf you are planning on joining us at this protest\, you can call us on the day to find out where we are – 07851 325 817

SUMMARY:Showing that the health community supports the Student Climate Strikers - September Actions
DESCRIPTION:Millions of children and young people from around the world have been striking on Fridays in an urgent call for action to address the climate crisis. They have called on adults to stand in solidarity with them for a giant week of action on 20th – 27th September. \nMembers of the healthcare community have been organising actions to support the students in different parts of the UK; use our database of health actions to check if an action has been planned near you. \n\nClick here to find your nearest action\n\nMedact members and other healthcare workers will be attending the London student march on 20th September as a group. We’ll meet beforehand in the Medact offices at 9.45am – and then travel to the march together. You would be very welcome to join us earlier\, from 8.30 am\, for breakfast and banner making; just email deirdreduff@medact.org so we have an idea of numbers. Our full address is The Grayston Centre\, 28 Charles Square\, London N1 6HT \n \nIf a health action has not been planned in your area\, there is still time to plan one! There will be student climate demos taking place all over the UK on 20th September. So we’re asking members of the healthcare community to organise a healthcare presence at your local student demo/march on 20th September (local student demos/marches are listed here). And/or to organise an alternative action\, to show your support for the students\, in your workplace. \nSee our action guide on how to organise your own local health events to support the students.  \nIf you’re interested in getting involved\, in either an “attending only” or an “organising a local action” capacity\, then please RSVP below. This will let us be in touch with further details; we can provide you with support to organise and advertise your local actions.  \nFinally\, it’s important to stress that we are not calling on the healthcare community – and especially patient facing healthcare workers – to strike on the 20th-27th September. Rather we are asking you to use your break periods and/or your days-off to take action to show solidarity with the student climate strikers while keeping patients safe. \n[Registration has now closed]

SUMMARY:Palestine National Demonstration - join our health justice bloc
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 11 May in London for National Demonstration for Palestine to mark the 71st anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe). \nThe Nakba saw the forced expulsion of over 700\,000 Palestinians from their homes\, forming the largest refugee population in the world at that time\, as well as several massacres across the country in cities such as Deir Yassin. Each year\, this date is marked by vigils and demonstrations around the world\, as well as in Palestine. \n(click to enlarge) \nWe will be joining the UK-Palestine Mental Health Network and the Palestine-UK Social Work Network to form a health and social justice bloc of the protest. \nBefore we begin marching to Whitehall\, our meeting point will be: \nSouth-east corner of Portland Place and Duchess Street (near the top of the BBC building) \nLook out for the Medact banner and the banners of the other two organisations. \nYou can RSVP below so we know to expect you\, and if you are unable to find us\, please call 07851 325 817. \nYou can find more information about the demonstration here: https://www.palestinecampaign.org/events/national-demonstration-for-palestine-11-may/ \n[Registration has now closed] \n

SUMMARY:Fighting Blood Coal and Blood Mines: In solidarity with communities impacted by Anglo American mining
DESCRIPTION:On 30th April\, we’ll stand in solidarity with communities whose health and lives have been devastated by Anglo American’s mining operations across the Global South. Join us for lunch\, discussions and some practical actions to hold this company to account. \nAnglo American – some background\nAnglo American operates in many parts of the Global South\, leaving a trail of health destruction in its wake. \nThe Cerrejón open-pit coal mine in La Guajira\, Colombia \nThis mining giant owns a large stake in the infamous Cerrejón mine\, a vast open pit coal mine in Colombia. Cerrejón has been long associated with human rights abuses including displacement\, a lack of consultation with indigenous communities and serious harm to the health of local communities. \nCommunities living near the mine are forced to breath air that is heavy with coal dust and filled with the stench of burning. Many children suffer from respiratory problems; some become so ill that they cannot run or shout. Local hospitals are inundated with patients suffering from acute respiratory problems. \nIn Peru\, Anglo American’s Quellaveco project has raised serious concerns and opposition among local people. It is believed that copper mining in this region will use vast amounts of water in an area that is considered at high risk of drought and is heavily impacted by climate change. \nThere are fears that Anglo American’s mining in Chile is speeding up the melting process of glaciers and leading to their disappearance in some cases.  Glacier disruption could have serious impacts on hydrological cycles in the country with potentially devastating impacts for large proportions of the Chilean population. \nAnglo American and/or companies that Anglo American has part-owned\, have also been associated with armed groups responsible for human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the Philippines and South Africa\, local communities have faced severe repression for protesting against mining operations. And in Ghana and Mali\, local people have lived in fear as extractive activities have destroyed health\, lands and livelihoods. \nCompanies like Anglo American are exacerbating global health inequities; their extractavism damages health in the Global South while much of their profits are concentrated in the Global North. \nWhat will the event involve? \nPart 1 – Lunch and discussion at Medact\nWe’ll start with lunch at the Medact offices and discuss some practical action opportunities we can take as a healthcare community to hold Anglo American to account. Including; \n\nHow to use twitter and other media to get messages across to investors attending the Anglo American AGM. \nActions we can take to push for legally binding instruments to regulate the activities of multinational corporations like Anglo American.\nUsing fossil fuel divestment as a solidarity tactic. \n\nPart 2 – Vigil at the Anglo American AGM\nWe’ll leave the Medact offices at 13.00 and travel as a group to the Anglo American AGM at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre Broad Sanctuary\, Westminster\, London SW1P 3EE. \nWe’ll hold a vigil outside the AGM as the company’s shareholders arrive. \nAccessibility\nIf you have any accessibility requirements please contact deirdreduff@medact.org and we can organise travel from Medact to the vigil to meet your needs. \nThe venue for the vigil itself is flat and the nearest accessible toilets are two minutes walk away in Westminster Central Hall (see building-specific accessibility information). A portable sound system will be used for speeches. There will be some photography and filming with phones and SLR cameras\, flash photography is unlikely. There are no seating areas. Email deirdreduff@medact.org if you require a foldable chair or for other information on accessibility. \n[Registration has now closed]

I have been a partner for twenty three years. I am also a GP trainer and coordinate the medical student (Hull York Medical School) teaching in the practice. With psychotherapy colleagues I have been facilitating pioneering group work with people with long term conditions in order to enable people to be better able to take control of their health and well-being. I have been collaborating with researchers at Hull University on this work. \nI have all my adult life felt strongly about social justice and environmental sustainability. Over the past few years\, and in particular since attending the Medact conference “Healthy Planet\, Better World” in 2016\, I have become much clearer that I need to become active in the movement towards a fairer and more sustainable world. My colleague Angela Harvey and I launched Yorkshire Medact last year and have been involved in anti-fracking campaigns in Yorkshire and Lancashire. \nNow 55\, I am able to devote more of my energies to working with these issues as I reduce the time that I devote to the practice. I am keen to become more involved in Medact’s work as I see Medact as a far-sighted organisation that ‘punches above its weight’ in terms of what it achieves for its size. I believe that working with such a broad remit (peace and security\, climate and environment\, economic justice and human rights) crucially enables the links to be made between all these areas. For all these reasons I would be very interested in joining the Medact board. \nLesley Morrison\nLesley Morrison is a retired GP\, still involved  in medical student teaching\, who has been an active member of Medact since its inception and a member of MCANW prior to that. She has always felt passionately about the need to rid the world of nuclear weapons  and about the importance of Medact’s work to show that disarmament\, development\, human rights and concern for the environment are inextricably interlinked. \nLiving just south of Edinburgh\, she would represent the views of Medact Scotland. \nNeena Modi\nProfessor Neena Modi is a consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and professor of neonatal medicine at Imperial College London. She completed a three year term as president of the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in March 2018. She heads a major neonatal research programme focused on the perinatal determinants of lifelong health\, and led the development of the UK National Neonatal Research Database\, of which she is the current director. \nProfessor Modi has made many contributions to children’s services\, and has been at the forefront of reinvigorating the clinical research base of paediatrics and child health. During her career she has served\, among many other roles\, as president of the UK Neonatal Society\, president of the Academic Paediatrics Association of Great Britain and Ireland\, and chair of the British Medical Journal ethics committee. She is currently president-elect of the Medical Women’s Federation. \nKitty Mohan\nKitty is a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control based in London and Oxford. A medical doctor by background she completed Public Health training in London in March 2018 and was awarded a PhD in Epidemiology from King’s College London in 2016. \nShe is the President of the European Junior Doctor Association\, which represents the interests of 300\,000 junior doctors across Europe. She was a member of BMA Council from 2013-18\, has previously been Director of the BMA \,and was joint lead negotiator for junior doctor contract negotiations whilst Co-chair of the Junior Doctors Committee between 2013 and 2015. \nDirections to Kinning Park Complex\nThe Kinning Park complex is conveniently located immediately adjacent to Kinning Park Underground station which can be reached coming from either Buchanan St [ for Queen St mainline] or St Enoch’s [for Central station].

SUMMARY:Blair Protest - Chilcot: Time for Truth and Justice
DESCRIPTION:After a seven year wait the Chilcot Report is finally going to be published on June 6th. Despite its astounding length (2.3 million words) it is highly likely that it will fall short of an outright condemnation of the Iraq war and fail to apportion blame to those who were truly responsible for the catastrophe. We are joining this protest on the day of publication outside the QEII Centre to demand #IraqTruthAndJustice
