Eighty-one years after the first use of nuclear weapons, their devastating impact remains a stark reminder that there is no health response to nuclear war. Health needs peace, not nuclear weapons.
As health workers, we know that real security is built by investing in the things that keep people healthy: a well-funded NHS, safe and affordable housing, accessible social care and thriving communities. Every pound spent on nuclear weapons is a choice not to invest in the foundations of health. Instead of preparing for catastrophic violence, we should be preventing it – by tackling inequality, strengthening public services and working towards a world free from nuclear weapons.
