Don’t Bank on The Bomb (DBOTB) UK – Project Coordinator Brief

We are looking to hire a consultant to help coordinate our new Don’t Bank on The Bomb campaign, from November 2024 to June 2025 at 2 days a week.

Project Overview

In September 2024, Medact’s Nuclear Weapons Group (NWG) launched a national Don’t Bank on the Bomb (DBOTB) campaign. Building on long standing work from PAX and ICAN, and campaigning work from DBOTB Scotland, the group seeks to grow a UK-wide network of campaigners, and create practical resources to support members to campaign and influence their banks, pension funds and other financial institutions to divest from nuclear weapons manufacturers.

Key Campaign Aims:

  1. To raise awareness about investments in nuclear weapons producers by banks, pension funds and financial institutions.
  2. To support people to campaign for UK banks, pension funds and financial institutions to divest from nuclear weapons producers.
  3. To provide accessible and evidence based information on nuclear weapons, and health justice arguments for divesting from nuclear weapons and investing in human security (housing, education, healthcare etc.)
  4. To support the broader movement against nuclear weapons in UK society.

Key Objectives:

  1. Develop and circulate a campaign leaflet, graphic and logo: a strong visual identity, directing people to a mailing list and resources to find out which banks and financial institutions invest in nuclear weapons.
  2. Develop and launch a core campaign guide/toolkit: expanding the work of Don’t Bank on the Bomb, ICAN and PAX – the toolkit will be a one stop shop for people to take action, individually or collectively, to pressure financial institutions to divest from nuclear weapons producers.
  3. Develop a national network of volunteer campaigners: meeting to share updates, advice, and eventually identify a single, national campaign target to unify efforts and amplify the campaign. This would ideally be a major UK health institution such as the BMA or NHS England.

Your Role

As Project Coordinator, you will hold administrative responsibilities for the campaign, and support NWG working group members with strategic oversight of the DBOTB UK network over 28 weeks from November 2024-June 2025, working 2 days a week (7hr/day). You will be managed by Medact’s Peace & Security Campaigner.

  1. Develop and circulate DBOTB campaign resources: (40%)
  • Work with P&S Campaigner and NWG Campaign Group to circulate the campaign leaflet, and develop the full campaign toolkit for DBOTB campaigners for dissemination. This will be a one stop shop for people to take action, individually or collectively, to pressure their banks, pension funds and financial institutions to divest from nuclear weapons producers.
  1. Oversee DBOTB Campaign Communications: (30%)
  • Act as point of contact for DBOTB network members – providing advice and direction for campaigners, with support from the P&S Campaigner.
  • Help to grow and oversee DBOTB UK mailing list, identifying avenues to reach and recruit key audiences to the campaign (mailing lists, public events).
  • Share campaign resources and updates with DBOTB UK mailing list.
  • Maintain internal communications with NWG working group and key organisational partners (ICAN, PAX, IPPNW, CND, Demilitarise Education).
  1. Develop a long-term campaign structure and strategy: (20%)
  • Work with P&S Campaigner, NWG Campaign Group and DBOTB Network to develop a network structure – identifying key roles, responsibilities and processes for onboarding new campaigners into both the DBOTB core group and broader network.
  • Work with P&S Campaigner, NWG Campaign Group and DBOTB Network to develop a long-term strategy to unify the campaign; identifying a national campaign target, and planning a campaign strategy for this target to divest from nuclear weapons. This strategy will be informed by successes and failures from nuclear divestment work of partner organisations.
  1. Coordinate DBOTB Campaign Meetings: (10%)
  • Organise and publicise DBOTB network meetings alongside NWG working group members. Between meetings, hold short 121 calls with new network members.

Our Role

  • Provide introduction to Medact, Nuclear Weapons Group, DBOTB campaigners and key organisational partners.
  • Share relevant resources (i.e ICAN Nuclear Spending reports, templates for campaign strategy development).
  • Provide line-management and support to achieve key objectives with a manageable and realistic workload – holding weekly meetings with Medact Peace and Security Campaigner.
  • Set up and provide access to Don’t Bank on The Bomb Campaign Google Group (core network members).
  • Set up and provide access to Don’t Bank on The Bomb Project Coordinator email account.
  • Provide access to Medact Canva and relevant Slack Channels.

Remuneration

The total value of the contract is £7840.

This role will be contracted for 28 weeks from November 2024-June 2025, for 2 days a week, 7hr/day.

The role will be remunerated at £20/hr, to a total of £1120 paid upon receipt of invoice every 4 weeks
