Medact is looking for someone with strong experience in effective communications to help us ensure our comms do justice to the strength and power of our campaigns for health equity.


Medact supports the health community to work together towards a world in which everyone can truly achieve and exercise their human right to health. We cover some of the most pressing national and global threats to health and wellbeing including climate change; human rights abuses; conflict and violence; and rising inequality.

We’re member-led, and our membership spans a range of people who work in health including nurses, doctors, midwives, and academics.

Great communications are vital to ensure the health community can use its voice effectively for good. Despite Covid, there’s strong energy among health workers to work for a fairer society, and tackle the power structures which perpetuate inequality and oppression. We want to shift the narrative about what’s important, and build a politics that centres public health and equity.

About the role

In this role, you’ll lead the process to develop and deliver Medact’s Communications Strategy, bringing the team fully on board. You’ll support colleagues, and our wider movement, to gain new comms skills and use the tools available to best effect.

Medact has a multi-skilled team who build great campaigns that draw people in and put decision-makers under pressure. From our Patients not Passports campaign tackling the Hostile Environment in health, to our recent action with Royal Medical Colleges that helped to force a Government U-turn on housing evictions, we’re confident we can make a difference. But we know our comms could be better, and that we could be using the media more strategically to drive the change we want to see.

Medact’s Communications Manager will play a central part in ensuring the voice of progressive health workers can be as powerful as possible. The stakes couldn’t be higher – Covid-19 and measures to control it have exposed and exacerbated the existing inequity and power imbalance in our society. The political disruption caused by the pandemic creates the potential to remake our economy to centre health justice. But it won’t be easy, and excellent communications will be vital for success.

About you

You’ll bring good communications experience and a clear sense of how strategic comms can be used to best effect in a campaigning context – although you don’t need to have worked in a campaigning organisation before. You’ll have an eye for a great media story, and know how to get it out into the world. An excellent team player, you’ll be able to share your skills confidently but also listen hard to colleagues and supporters, taking time to understand their experience and what works for them. With a strong commitment to social justice and transformative change, you’ll be excited about the challenge of shifting power to ensure everyone can live a good and healthy life.
