The United States is in the early stage of planning the development of a range of low-yield earth-penetrating nuclear weapons known as bunker busters or mini-nukes. They claim these will cause less collateral damage from blast or heat than existing weapons. But they would produce major fallout, perhaps over several square miles downwind, causing hundreds of cases of radiation sickness in urban areas. We are concerned that recently proposed developments at AWE Aldermaston such as the Orion laser could be in preparation for a new generation of UK nuclear weapons.
