Refugee and Asylum Health

A selection of online training resources

The Medical Peace Work website

This is a self-running and multi-media learning tool which aims to create awareness about the peace role of health professionals and to strengthen their peace capacities.

The content is presented in 21 chapters, which consist of:

  • textbook lessons to help you acquire deeper knowledge
  • standardized questions which test if you have reached the lessons' objectives
  • problem-based e-learning cases which apply the theory you have learnt in the textbook lessons to practical examples.

All content, except tests, are open for browsing freely without registering for an account. However, to take the full course you need an account so you can take the tests, track your progress and participate in the forums

Objectives

When you have finished this course you should be able to:

  • apply a public health approach to war and other forms of violence
  • demonstrate knowledge about the health impact of direct and structural violence on individuals and societies
  • highlight the range of different ways in which health care workers can contribute to the reduction of peace deficits
  • identify health professionals’ own peace qualities and demonstrate awareness of other useful peace skills
  • recognize and exploit opportunities for violence prevention and peace promotion at your workplace and in clinical practice.

Target Group

The course is an introduction to Medical Peace Work for doctors, nurses, public health workers and other health professionals and their students. In particular it is meant for those who

  • want to strengthen their peace and conflict competencies
  • intend to work for humanitarian, development, human rights, or medical peace organizations abroad or at home
  • want to improve health outcomes for their patients and communities in violence-prone settings.

Prerequisites

As the course includes sound and film material a good broadband internet connection is necessary. Alternatively, you could download the textbook and e-learning cases to your hard disc and go through them off-line. If that is not possible, we recommend you obtain our CD-ROM which contains both the textbook and e-learning cases.

Certificate

When you have completed the course and have achieved an approved score of correct answers in the standardized questions, you can receive a Medical Peace Work course certificate by e-mail.

Further Information

The Refugee Experience' psychosocial module. 'The Refugee Experience' psychosocial module. Work on this module commenced in 1998 when a grant from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation enabled Alastair Ager and me to commence making the material that we had prepared for the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford, International Summer School available to a wider audience. We recognised that it was not always possible to journey to Oxford and that our material could also be of use closer to 'the field'.
The Online Human Rights Learning Centre The Study Guides offer introductions to various human rights topics. The guides present definitions, key rights at stake, human rights instruments, and protection and assistance agencies. They guides also offer links to the full text of international treaties relevant for the topic, and other useful resources on the HREA web site.
