Audio Recordings from Sheffield Fracking Masterclass

In 2015 Medact published a review of the potential health impacts of unconventional shale gas production (USGP), including the process of high volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF), in the UK.

Since this initial report, Medact has been collecting together newly published evidence regarding the impacts on health of fracking, and will be releasing an updated report in early July.

In the run up to this release, Medact and the Faculty of Public Health co-hosted a day long workshop on 10th June,  the aim of which was to provide an opportunity for public health professionals to learn about the process of HVHF for shale gas production, the role that shale gas may play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the social, economic and health impacts of shale gas production.

Audio recordings of three presentations from the day are now available:

  1. Dr David McCoy provides an overview of the potential pathways via which fracking can impact on health – locally and globally.
  2. Dr Jo Hawkins describes the current regulatory processes that apply to HVHF in the UK, what gaps exist in regulation, and how these may be filled.
  3. Professor Patrick Saunders examines in depth whether there is sufficient peer reviewed scientific evidence to support claims that shale gas can be extracted safely.
